Woot!

So, I generally feel better after talking things out with people. Bouncing ideas off people, listening to other people's perspectives, and generally finding out how sheltered I am (sometimes) really helps. After yesterday's foo, a friend reached out to me and helped me see that it's not (just) me, it's FB, and offered some suggestions for how to ( Read more... )

With regard to Farcebook, it's very definitely not just you. It's me as well! That site is and always has been shite. It should come in a plain package with a government health warning!

OMG yes! If only you had to click on a warning before you signed up "may cause unbelievable idiocy in formerly awesome people."

Yeesh. I hope that taking this break helps me to not be such a compulsive user anymore.

Having unfollowed all my Facebook contacts, I'm just checking in on 'New posts' when I have a spare couple of minutes here and there. However, avoiding it is difficult. I met three of my Facebook contacts IRL for the first time on Hogmanay, and have since acquired two more who were at the gig. I just wish I could persuade them to come over to LiveJournal. If only I was rich, I could bribe them with £100 each to set up LJ accounts!

Apparently the portion of the prayer candle that I dedicated to you has lead to positive results. There is much strength in community of others, especially when they're able to relate.

*big squishy hugs* It delights me that you're feeling much better and gaining control. =)

I've seen the repurposing and rejuvenation on your social media and it's impressed me enough to use it as a point of reference/aspiration. Facebook became all things to all people and deteriorated accordingly. It's actually merged two very good ideas (not well but hey you can't have everything), social media and the web portal. I do miss the days of AOL and iGoogle pages containing my various newsfeeds/social media/messaging/email in a convenient place. The one really big issue is that unless you curate that shit really well, the signal to noise ratio becomes overwhelming and it becomes a time suck and infinitely less useful. (One can argue that FB's fucked up algorithms actually contribute to this.) Still, there are events and other things that I would not have discovered if not for the occasionally misplaced ratio so there is that. One of my tech savvy friends hit a very apropo term when he called it 'the baby web.'

Agreed. The signal to noise ratio was definitely a problem. But I'm doing better with it now. :) And I'm glad to be an inspiration! <3
