I am so glad you are tackling this challenging year from a writer’s perspective. There are certainly ethical/medical issues here that I’m glad you are willing to focus on. It’s hard for me to imagine the crew getting beyond Jim’s death and resurrection and get them ready within one year to start the 5-year mission of exploration. Looking forward as usual to your insights into the hearts, minds and souls of our beloved crew. As Captain Pike used to say - “Punch it.”

I'm dying for the next chapter! I'm wondering if his body attempting to reject the drug(was in the novelization) will affect the effectiveness of the serum. Poor Bones. I'll bet this will eat him up. Possibly have flashbacks to the shuttlecraft crash.

Huh... I didn't read the novelization. Was it any good? Who wrote it? Do you think I should read it before I continue writing this?

It's the novelization of the movie by Alan Dean Foster. Same guy who wrote the 1st movie book. It doesn't really have much extra in it. It's freakishly true to he movie and way way too much description making it very long winded. A very difficult read. The only comments that would pertain to your story in making a difference is McCoy's comment to Jim when he wakes up from his coma ( ... )

Oh, I HATE Alan Dean Foster's writing. I've hated every book of his that I've tried to read. Can't stomach it. Thank you for sharing that bit of info so I don't have to read the whole thing, though. And it makes me glad that I'm working along the same general lines as canon, even if it's the novelization. I could tweak what I've got slightly to make it work with canon, although some of what I see in that section doesn't work with the way I see Bones, nor the way I view the theoretical serum working in a biochemical sense. But hey, I've always been a stickler for details. :D

Anyway, thank you again! An interesting bit of info to consider. :D

Belated comment, for various reasons. That said -
From the first chapter, I'm already loving this. A nice detailed examination of the possible physical mechanisms for the magiiiic blooood AND (just as important, if not moreso) the ethical implications - which perfectly fits Bones' character, both in general and because of this movie's many connections to WoK, where he was the only person in the room going "now hold on here, just a minute" re: Genesis. And it looks like he's going to have to keep wrestling, on a very personal level, with the problems of creating "life from lifelessness".

It really bothered me how callous and casual Bones seemed to act in that scene where Jim wakes up. I couldn't imagine Bones doing something like that without dealing with some very difficult ethical questions. So... that's what I do with fic: I tackle parts of canon that bother me and try to fix them. Just like it bothered me that Bones was injecting Khan's platelets into the tribble. Why the fuck would he use a platelet fraction? That makes NO biochemical or physiological sense. Platelets facilitate clotting. There's no reason for platelets to be involved in the regeneration of dead tissue or the ability to cure diseases or any crap like that. So... I had to play with it.

Anyway, thank you for reading! More chapters soon!
