a little of this, a little of that, a little what-have-you

I've been on hiatus for awhile. Essentially, I'm working in NYC, staying in an airline crash pad with mostly pilots. Housing is so expensive in NYC and I'm always out traveling ( Read more... )

Great to see you on here! I'm glad you've settled in to the airline life as well as you seem to have.

Is a crash-pad like an apartment complex? Is it attached to a particular airport? It sounds intriguing!

A crash pad is just a giant apartment where airline people stay when they are working. For example, my apartment has 6 rooms, and most rooms have 3-4 roommates. Even though *technically* about 18-20 people stay there, usually there aren't more than 4-5 people in the place at a time. I have two other roommates but I rarely ever see one of the guys and my other roommate and I have very opposite schedules most of the time. Most people in crashpads are commuters or (like myself) new hires who non-rev on days off and are getting settled into the job before jumping into an apartment lease.

So yeah, crashpads are really just large apartments that a landlord has designed specifically for airline people. They aren't attached to airports, they are usually just in neighborhoods near the airport for easy commute. It sounds kind of crazy, but in actuality, there are times when no one is in the place because everyone is out traveling somewhere.

Wow, that sounds awesome! Thanks for all the detail; I'd love to stay in something like that for awhile.

haha yeah, it's a lot like dorm-like in many ways. It can be kind of fun too because since we're all in the same industry, we have a lot in common and when a lot of people are there, it's kind of a like a party. We go out to the local bars, dinner at the local diner, etc...it's fun actually.
