CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN

Nothing can make Izumi Yana’s heart beat a thousand times faster and left her totally motionless in her spot... until now. She suddenly felt really cold, her palms are cold as ice, not to mention how it wouldn’t stop shaking even if she held it together. The brief moment of Jun and his mother exchanging hugs felt like an hour long for her. Her world stopped and she couldn’t see anything else other than the mother and son pairing in front of her.

As Yana stare at Jun’s mother, she noticed that he doesn’t look much like her. Unlike Jun, his mother’s face is very gentle and approachable. She may not be as young looking or as stylish like her mom but she exudes the motherly aura by how she looks and acts with Jun. Yana wonders if she and her mom gives the same impression to others whenever they are together.

“Mom, this is Izumi Yana.” Yana suddenly came back to her senses after Jun took her hand to introduce her to his mother. Her hand is still trembling and Jun noticed it as he squeeze it real tight, as if telling her that it’s going to okay.

“Of course, who doesn’t know her?” His mother slaps his shoulder playfully. “Nice to meet you, Yana-chan. You’re really very beautiful in person.” She gave Yana this warm smile and she suddenly felt very welcome. If Jun got anything from his mom, it is that smile and the ability to make her feel safe with that reassuring smile.

“Ehh... thank you.” Yana shyly said and she couldn’t really look straight into her eyes due to her nervousness.

“You don’t need to be so shy, Yana-chan. I don’t bite like my son.” Jun’s mom said jokily as she took Yana’s hand from Jun and leads her inside. Yana looked back at Jun and he nods at her and smiled.

As they reached inside the house, Yana noticed how homey it feels. The warmth of the colors, the comfort of the seats and the ample display of family pictures in the living room gives a nostalgic feel, even if this is the first time she’s been here, she can totally imagine what kind of childhood Jun has growing up in this house.

“Is this you?” A picture of a chubby toddler and a little girl caught Yana’s attention.

Before Jun can steal the picture frame from Yana’s hand, his mom suddenly speak. “Yes, that’s Jun when he was just around one year old and that girl is his older sister. He’s quite heavy when he was young and he’s a big brat.” That last sentence was uttered in a whisper but Jun still heard it.

“Mom, I heard that.” Jun came to their side and Yana and his mom are laughing quietly to themselves. “Stop laughing.” he ordered them as he took the frame from Yana but the two women are still laughing at him.

“Oh. They are here!” A woman’s voice echoed through the living room.

“Nee-chan.” Jun instantly said and two men came from behind her. Yana suddenly felt frozen again. She doesn’t expect to meet the rest of his family today. His mother is pressuring enough, what more if it’s the entire family?

“Hello, Izumi-san, Happy Birthday!” The girl Jun called Nee-chan suddenly greeted Yana with a big smile followed by an equally big hug that took her by surprise.

“Nee-chan, don’t frighten her.” Jun told her as he gently rubs Yana’s back for comfort.

“I’m just welcoming her, don’t be so possessive.” Jun’s Nee-chan told him off.

“This is my sister, Noriko.” Jun began introducing them. “That’s her fiancé, Shuji-kun.” he pointed to the younger guy from behind who smiled at her. “And this is my father.” he puts an arm around his father’s shoulder.

“Nice to meet you, Izumi-san.” His father spoke to her and she suddenly felt even more nervous compare to meeting his mother earlier. His father has this intimidating feel to him, the same intimidation that Jun possesses when they first met.

“It’s my pleasure.” Yana replied. “I didn’t know Jun-kun would bring me here. It got me off guard.” she address to everyone.

“He got us off-guard too.” Noriko said. “He suddenly asked us to come here two hours ago.”

“Nee-chan!” Jun tried to shut his sister off.

“Well, well, I’m sure everyone’s hungry. Dinner’s waiting.” Their mother came abruptly to stop these bickering siblings. Everyone obliged as they all walk towards the dining room.

“You’ve got some explaining to do.” Yana whispered to him and he just laughed.

“Don’t worry, they love you like I do.” Jun confidently said as he took her hand in his before planting a quick kiss on her forehead.

Jun and Yana settled on the only empty seat opposite Noriko and her fiancé, Shuji. The dining table are filled with food, there’s a big hot pot in the middle and a plate full of grilled meat and fish.

“Jun can you help me with something?” His mother called from the kitchen and he obediently followed.

A few minutes later, Jun and his mother began singing happy birthday and he appeared with a big cake on his hand. The rest followed to sing along, gathering behind Yana, leaving her totally surprised and speechless.

When they finished singing, Jun stood behind a stunned Yana. “Make a wish.” He told her and she closed her eyes, makes a silent wish and excitedly blows the twenty six candles on the cake as every clap their hands, as if watching a little girl blows her birthday cake.

Jun placed the cake on the empty place in the dining table, picks Yana up from her seat and hugged her tightly his arms while his whole family watch.

“Thank you.” Yana mumbled in his ears, she’s about to cry from the sound of her voice.

“I love you.” Jun whispered back and that’s when the tears fell from her eyes. “Why are you crying?” he held her cheeks warmly in his hands.

“I’m just really happy.” Yana smiled beneath the tears as she jumps back to embrace this amazing man in front of her.

---

After their dinner, the men were gathered in the living room drinking sake while the women were left in the dining room, with their after dinner teas.

“He came to me once asking for advice. That baka!” Noriko suddenly blurted out as soon as her mother steps out of the dining room. Just minutes ago, they were just talking about her drama with Nino. “Well, he didn’t really deliberately say that he wanted advice but from the way he’s beating around the bush I just knew he needed some sisterly advice, or a woman’s insight for that matter.”

Yana noticed how the Matsumoto siblings are very similar on how they speak, Noriko just like Jun, frank and straightforward.

“What do you mean?” Yana asked.

“He was really troubled when you left for Thailand without notice. He was worried that things will be different once you come back.” So it was about her, Yana thought. “Jun never consoled me even once about his girl problems so imagine my surprise when he dropped the bomb.” Noriko gave Yana a knowing look.

Yana wondered how much info Jun gave his sister about their relationship. Did she know about the ecchi parts too? Or the ground rules agreement? Now Yana is a little uneasy, judging by the smile on Noriko’s face, it feels like she knows something.

“I’m just glad that both of you finally worked things out and you’re both happy now.” Noriko took Yana hand and she gently squeezes it. “He loves you much, that baka.” She glanced at her brother whose happily exchanging stories with their father and her fiancé.

---

After sharing endless stories and laughters over sake and red wine and the leftover birthday cake and some homemade cookies in the Matsumoto household’s living room, everyone decided to call it a day. Jun’s parents send their children, with their respective partners, off in the driveway to their cars.

“Did you have a nice time, Yana-chan?” Jun’s mother still wouldn’t let go of Yana’s arm even if Jun already opened the car door for her.

Yana smiled and she nodded. “Thank you for everything. The food was delicious.”

“You’re welcome here anytime, just give me a call and I’ll cook for you. You can come here even without Jun.” His mother told her discreetly and she laughed softly before nodding.

---

In the car ride going home, Jun and Yana choose to be quiet. It looks like she’s thinking deeply with the look on her face.

“Something’s wrong?” Jun asked.

Yana shakes her head without even saying anything. The silence creeps in again and it continues until they reached her apartment building.

“What’s your schedule for tomorrow?” Jun began talking in a safe topic, this silence is starting to irritate him, like something is not going right.

“I’ll be in the studio the entire time.” Yana took out the key of house and opens the door. She comes in but stopped to turned back to look at him, as if she’s expecting him to go home tonight which is totally not in his plan. He wants to spend the night with her, even without the sexy action, he just wanted to be with her longer.

“Jun...” Yana started in a voice he didn’t like. Jun abruptly kissed her, letting himself inside and closing the door with his foot.  This is what he’s worrying about, she’s about to tell him something terrible and he stopped it right away by reminding her with a kiss.

“I’m sorry.” Yana cried as she gets out of the kiss. Her face is red and filled with tears. Tears that he doesn’t have any idea where it came from. “I’m still not confident enough for this... for us.” she said in a broken and sad voice.

“What are you talking about?” Jun ceased to believe that this is even happening. Their relationship hasn’t even lasted for twenty-four hours yet she’s breaking-up with him right now.

Yana just collapse into the couch and continued shedding tears.

“I love you, Yana.” Jun drops into his knees in front of her. “And you love me too, right?” His voice is breaking but he’s trying hard to sound strong and firm. He took hold of her hands and grips it tightly as she continues to sob.

“What happened?” Jun’s voice suddenly squeaks as tears already manage to break through his eyes. “Is it my family-”

“No.” Yana quickly answers. “It’s not them, they are very nice and I instantly liked them... It’s me, Jun. It’s me...just give me time, Jun.”

“Yana, tell me what’s wrong. Let me understand why you’re doing this.” Jun pleads to her, brushing the tears off his cheeks.

“I don’t know why I’m doing this!” Yana stood up and her voice rises as well. “I just felt like I needed to do this. My mind is telling me to do this!” she turns her back on him as another batch of tears fell from her eyes.

Jun stood up and walk towards her. “What does your heart say?” he softly asked before hugging her from behind. He can feel her whole body trembling with his touch.

Yana tried to stop the tears and composed herself before turning to face him. She caressed his face admiringly. “I love you so much.” She whispered, clasping his face on her shaking hands as she controls her voice from breaking. “But love alone is not enough... I don’t have a family to introduce to you like what you did earlier-”

“I don’t need you to introduce me to anyone.” Jun interrupts her. “All I needed is you, Yana. You alone is enough for me.”

“You don’t understand, Jun.” Yana told him.

“Then make me understand!” Jun raised his voice.

“I don’t know how to make you understand, Jun.” Yana remained calm even after Jun raised his voice at her. “I feel so inferior, so small... I just instantly shrink whenever you tell me that you love me, like I’m not worthy of it. Even with how your whole family treats me so warmly, I feel so overwhelm by it. Maybe because no one has ever told me those words so lovingly and affectionately like you do. Maybe because this is the first I ever felt so welcomed by a family...”

Jun turns his back on her and rests his hand on his waist as he tried to control his emotions from exploding.

“I’m not confident enough, Jun.” Yana slowly walks towards him and before she can even touch him, he stormed out of her house, slamming the door so loud that it can even wake up everyone on that floor.

Yana fall on the floor, crying. Her heart felt so heavy and she can feel it clenching. She continues to sob endlessly like the tears wouldn’t run out from her eyes. It’s getting hard for her to breath and it feels like she’s running out of air on her lungs. She pants heavily as she search for air. She tried to compose herself but the tears are stubborn enough not to listen to her. She can’t breathe anymore and she’s starting to feel so weak, she put her palms in front of her and its white as paper. Her pulse starts beating faster with the sight.

Instinctively, she reached for her phone and called Eri on speed dial, she answered on the fourth ring.

“ERI!” Yana gasped as soon as she heard Eri’s voice. “Eri, I can’t breathe... help me... I’m at home.” her vision is starting to get blurry and she felt weaker by a mile.

---

She slowly opened her eyes, it felt really heavy that she even thinks twice if she even wanted to open it or just continue to go to sleep but something placed on her wrist is keeping her uneasy and she wants to remove it. She lifts her arms and it’s only then that she realize that she’s got all these tubes on her.

“I’m pretty sure you know why you’re here, Yana.” Yana heard Eri’s voice from behind.

“I’m sorry.” That’s all she can say. She still feels a little weak until now.

“The doctors said that if the rash subsides and the blood test turns out fine, you’ll be discharged tomorrow.” Eri informs her.

“How do I look?” Yana touched her face and she can feel that it’s a little swollen.

Eri chuckled. “Funny.” She said, clasping her hand in her mouth. “Terrible allergic reaction you had ever.”

Yana softly smiled before closing her eyes again, she feels a little dizzy.

“I called him.” Eri suddenly said and Yana shoots her eyes open.

“Who?”

“Matsumoto-san. I didn’t know you had a fight with him last night.” Eri said in defense. “But don’t worry, he’s stuck in filming. I’m giving him updates through text.” Eri stood up from her seat, crossing her arms on her chest and leaning her face close to Yana. “BAKA!!!” she yelled at her.

“Shut up, Eri. I’m not yet ready for your lecture. Wait until I’m strong enough.” Yana pulled the blanket over her face.

“Baka! Baka! BAKA!!!” Eri ignored her and continued attacking her with that four-letter word.

*Does anyone know the name of Jun's sister? Coz I totally made that name up. LOL. Also, there's this rumor going around on tumblr and twitter a few days ago that his sister got married... I wonder if that's true...
