Chapter Eight: The Perfectly Handwritten Letter

“It’s a pity that we can’t say goodbye to Sophie-chan.” Nino sighed disappointedly. They are sitting in a taxi with Ohno as Sho offered to drop them off to the airport. Aiba and Jun are in another taxi behind them.

Since Sho decided to stay and left the hotel, they didn’t get to see Sophie anymore. They all have developed a good friendship with her despite the fact that she’s the reason for that argument with Sho and Jun, a fight between the members for the first time.

“I’ll tell her you all said goodbye.” Sho smiled. He was happy that the members are all accepting his decision wholeheartedly and they are supporting him all the way. Well, that is, of course, with the exception of Jun who blatantly declared that he does not approve of Sophie. Sho cannot blame him. Jun brave to say what he really feels, even if it affects the other person negatively. That’s just the way he is, he speaks his mind all the time. Aside from that, he is the most dedicated one in the group. As much as possible, he wanted to keep the five of them intact and they remained intact for almost fourteen years. Nothing has ever torn them apart as a group, not until now.

“I suppose Johnny-san has allowed you stay?” Ohno inquired and Sho nodded with a smile.

A quick exchange of meaningful look from Ohno and Nino didn’t fail to escape Sho eyes and he looked at both of them inquisitively.

“I guess, you have us to thank for that, Sho-chan.” Nino pats Sho’s shoulders as he crosses his eyebrows in confusion.

Ohno is kind enough to explain. “He called us one by one yesterday. At first, he just asked how we are but it lead to asking us about you.” He stopped to observe Sho’s face, who is slowly beginning to understand.

“Did you mention Sophie?” Sho asked straightaway. He doesn’t want Sophie’s name to get involved in this. Well, not now. He knows that eventually Johnny-san will know about her but now is not the right time. He wants to tell him about her personally, when he gets back.

“No.” Nino answered and Sho felt relieved. “We are in no position to tell anyone about your private life, even if I’m dying to.” He chuckled.

“Johnny-san called me first. He asked me what made you want to stay. That caught me off guard but I told him that it’s something personal and he should hear it all from you.” Ohno began explaining. “And then he asked me if I should allow you to stay.”

“He totally let us decide for your fate.” Nino laughed as he leaned back on the car seat.

“I told him that there’s nothing wrong in letting you stay here as long as you know the responsibilities you have back home.” Ohno smiled for the first time and Sho feel like hugging him. “After the call, I gave the others the heads up.”

“Aiba-chan and I said the same thing. We both agreed for you to stay.” Nino puts in. “Jun-kun is a different story though.”

“He didn’t say anything to Johnny-san at all.” Ohno informed Sho. “He got the last call and he said that the majority already decided and his vote, regardless if he agrees or not, doesn’t matter anymore.”

“I can’t blame Matsujun, really. I understand where he’s coming from.” Sho sighed sadly. “I just wish he’ll give Sophie the benefit of the doubt.”

Nino and Ohno exchanged looks. Sho doesn’t have any idea on Jun’s suspicion about Sophie’s identity and the two figured they shouldn’t bring that topic into this conversation because it doesn’t involve them in the first place.

Just before the clock hits 1 in the afternoon, the five guys have already reached the Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris, all ready to board their flight back home. As they say their final goodbye to Sho at the drop off area, an unexpected person came by to say her goodbye.

“I just can’t let you guys go like this. I should send you all off.” Sophie suddenly shows up from behind as the guys rejoice upon her appearance.

Aiba abruptly suggested a group hug and Sophie willing agreed but the rest declined him right away. He pulled Sho and Sophie with each hand while Sophie pulls Nino and Ohno into the small circle, giving in to the hug.

Jun is left alone from behind, the corner of his lip is slowly curving upward as he watched them happily squeezing each other. He just can’t pretend to be happy, he hates pretending just to please someone.

“We won’t keep you long, guys. You all need to check-in now.” Sho reminded as they all pulled out from their power hug.

“Umm. We’ll contact you once we arrived in Tokyo.” Nino said, putting on his back pack and pulling his luggage handle.

“We’ll wait for your return, Sho-chan.” Aiba smiled brightly as Sho nods.

The guys all said their final goodbye and hugs, one by one to Sho and Sophie. After Jun’s turn to give Sho a hug, his eyes went to Sophie as she stares at him blankly. He was about to turn his back but Sophie swiftly grabbed his hand and gave him a small hug while handing him a small piece of paper, he was hesitant to get it but Sophie pressed her hand hard on his and insisted to give the paper. Jun slipped it on his jeans pocket as both of them hoped that no one saw their little secret exchange.

In the ever so busy Café de Flore, Sho and Sophie are taking their afternoon tea in that same table they shared fourteen days ago. Before, this café is just a famous shop that Sophie goes to whenever she wants to have a nice morning coffee or when she wants to take a break from studying and to laze around in the afternoon reading romantic novels. She never thought she will find love in this place.

“So…” Sophie started, doodling a finger around the small spot on the table. “Have you decided when to fly back to Tokyo?” She’s not raising her eyes to meet him.

Sho leaned forward and titled her chin up, he saw her eyes, cold and lifeless. “Do you want me to go?” He pouts, trying to light up the atmosphere.

Sophie suddenly loosens up as she smiles faintly. “I don’t mean it like that. I just think that you need to decide on when to go back. You just can’t let the days pass by and decide as it is. You’ll never find the willingness to go back.”

The wind blew her hair away as Sho tries to fix it by tugging it to the back of her ear. “I won’t go back until I see the spark in your eyes again.” He softly said while admiring her face. Sophie changed a lot since his birthday and he doesn’t why. Every time he’ll ask her, she’ll just say that she’s tired and school is stressing her out. He knows that she’s lying.

“Spark?” Sophie repeated as she laughs slightly. Even the way she laughs gives a feel that she’s forcing it.

“The same spark I saw in this very spot fourteen days ago.” Sho answered, running his finger on her temple down to her jaw. “The glimmer in your eyes that made me fall in love with you.”

Sophie felt her heart pounding hard on her chest like it’s breaking into pieces. She can feel every love and affection that he’s giving her but it breaks her heart to know that she’s not giving the same amount of love to him.

She brings her hand to his cheeks and leaned closer. “I’ll try my best to give it back to you.” She softly mumbled as she gently kissed his lips before going for a warm embrace. It wasn’t just any embrace, it was tight, long and full of meaning.

Sho is the man Sophie prayed for. He cares for her, he fights for her. He made her feel safe. He understands and his patience is admirable. He never fail to show her how much she meant to him, how much he loves her. It was the right love but it was a love found at the wrong time, a love that no matter how perfect it may seem, it pains her tremendously.

“You’re choking me.” Sho mumbled as he puts a hand on her arm, she loosens her hug but she didn’t let go.

Sho gently strokes her back, he knows that something is wrong but Sophie is keeping everything to herself and leaving him out of it. It’s not about school or how she’s getting pressured because she’ll be graduating in four months. It’s about them. And that is the sole reason why he decided to stay, he needs to know what’s worrying her. He needs to assure her that this relationship is strong enough to stand the hardships they may face.

“I love you.” She suddenly said and Sho smiled.

“I love you more, Sophie.” He replied affectionately. She grew up in Europe and she’s not embarrassed to say that word out loud and he is pressured to do the same. At first, he was uncomfortable but as time goes by, that word suddenly became normal. He would just utter it unconsciously, in the morning when they wake up, when she comes back from school, when they would take a walk in the park and when they would go to sleep.

Sophie took a deep sigh as she tightens her hug again but this time, careful enough not to choke him. She’s crying, again. The controlled weeps give it away. Sho tried to pull away to look at her face but she wouldn’t let go of him. He resulted to stroking her back again, asking her to stop.

“You just have to tell me, Sophie. I will understand, I promise.” Sho almost begged her.

Sophie just cried in his shoulders, still hugging him, not letting go. She can’t tell him. He will get hurt.

Meanwhile, in the plane that will bring the four members of Arashi back to Tokyo, the whole surrounding is dimmed and every passenger is fast asleep except for Matsumoto Jun. That little moment he had with Sophie is stuck in his head, replaying every minute as he stare into that small piece of paper on his hand. He can’t bring himself to open it earlier because Aiba is seating beside him and he just can’t let him see it. Especially with how Sophie tried to give it to him discreetly, this small piece of paper should just be between the two of them.

And now that everyone’s asleep, he unfolds that piece of paper and decided to read it. It was rather long and written neatly. Her handwriting is so beautiful that you wouldn’t think she spent half of her life away from Japan.

Jun,

I know you wouldn’t listen to me if I asked you to talk. I don’t have the courage to speak to you directly either. So I wrote this letter. I wish that after you read this, your impression of me have changed. I am really hoping for that.

We didn’t start out well but you’ve changed and you gave me a chance to prove to you that I am a different person than what you initially thought. We were good friends and I’m glad I had the opportunity to know all of you even if it’s just a small period of time. I will always cherish the friendship. I will never forget each and every one of you.

It is because of you that I met Sho. If it wasn’t for me getting into a small dispute with you that drunken night, I wouldn’t have known the man that I love right now and probably, the man I will love for the rest of my life.

I love Sho. If I can’t get you to believe anything about me, I wouldn’t force myself then. I’m only asking you to believe in that one thing. I love Sho so much. That is true.

I may have kept secrets. I do have many secrets and I’m sorry for keeping it from all of you. I’m sorry for keeping it from Sho. But I only did it because I want to forget everything, the pain, the struggles, the miseries of that one girl’s life.

I want to live a simple life. I want to start anew. That’s why I went to Paris. That’s why I became Sophie.

Whatever my life is before, it’s already buried deeply into the ground. I don’t want to go back to that life anymore. Being Sophie is probably the best decision I made. I became free.

I’m sorry I can’t tell you who I am. I wish you’ll just remember that drunk girl from the bar, the girl who has the guts to insult Matsumoto Jun. You once accepted Sophie, you even became good friends. I wish you’ll give her another chance.

Once again, I am sorry for being the girl who gets in between Arashi. I am sorry for being the reason why Sho decided to stay in Paris and left you guys on your own. I am sorry for being the reason why you guys fight for the first time.

I feel horrible. So I am making things right.

Sho will come back to you guys. Soon. I assure of that.

I am just asking you to give me some time with him. A little more time before I finally let him go. For good.

I love him and it is because I love him that I’m letting him go.

I did a little bit of research about Arashi, about him. I went through Ai-chan’s stash of videos on her hard drive in secret.

I instantly became a fan. I find myself laughing along with your shows, humming along to your songs, getting goosebumps at how huge your concerts are. And then I realized, is this how Arashi affects everyone’s life back in Japan?

I can’t take everything away from Sho. You are right, his career is more important. I don’t want him to abandon his life for me. I wouldn’t forgive myself for that. At the same time, I can’t take his fans’ happiness away and selfishly have him for myself. I am not that cruel.

I’m sorry for almost ruining Arashi. I assure you, Sho will come back, he will make you all laugh again with his failures on that game show and his cosplaying in the other.

I am deeply sorry, Jun.

I will not come back to Sho’s life again after he goes back to Arashi. He deserves to be happy, truly happy. I can’t give that to him.

For the meantime, until he’s yet to find the right person, I asked you and the rest of the guys to make him happy. Make him forget everything about me. Make him see the positive things in life. Let him know that life needs to go on and I am just a short chapter in his life. And if possible, introduce her to a nice girl he truly deserves. It is hard for me to say this but I need to do it. I need to let Sho live his life without me.

I will always look out for Arashi. I will be your fan until the end. Continue to make me proud.

Sophie.

Jun neatly folded back the letter and is now carrying a big burden in his chest. Sophie’s letter made him sad and guilty for actually being harsh on her. He realized that Sophie is not a bad person, she is actually the kindest person he knew. The courage to let go of the man she love for the sake of others but herself, it’s admirable. Not everyone will have the courage to do that. When people are in love, they tend to be selfish and possessive but Sophie remained the same level-headed person that she is.

Jun slipped back the letter to his pocket and pulled the blanket up to his chest. He wouldn’t be able to sleep for the rest of the flight. Actually, he thinks that he wouldn’t be able to sleep well for the next few days until Sho gets back to Tokyo. He knew that Sho will go home heartbroken and in despair, unless he do something about it.

A thought suddenly cross him mind... Should he stop Sophie from breaking up with Sho?
