I said in the last chapter that I will update faster than usual but I didn't realize that it's a weekend. I do more stuff on weekends than weekdays. LOL.Anyways, here it is. :)

This will be the last Nino-centric chapter on this fic. By next chapter, the focus is on Sho already. :))

As always, this is unbeta-ed so tell me if there are any errors and mistakes. Comments, suggestions, reactions and criticisms are gladly welcomed. Happy reading! :)

Chapter Nineteen: Hidden Affection

Two weeks have passed since the tragic accident that shook the entire nation and the tension from the media hasn’t died down a bit. The Crown Prince still hasn’t made any developments yet and unfortunately, his condition got worst and worst as days gone by. The Imperial Household Agency holds a press conference every day to update the people on the condition of the Crown Prince but much to their disappointment, they haven’t heard any good news since the accident occurred.

Unknown from the overly aggressive pack of paparazzi camping outside the hospital, a certain Ninomiya Kazunari has been visiting every single day, cautiously entering the hospital premises from the backdoor entrance that the Imperial Family uses when they come. The Imperial guards all know him by now and they all lets him pass without much interrogation. He has also met the eldest daughter, Satsuki and her husband a few times and other members of the family. And just the other day, he was introduced to the Emperor and Empress. It was very surreal in that moment, he never imagined rubbing elbows with the most powerful family in the country, drinking tea, eating expensive biscuits and sharing stories with them makes him feel so small.

But Nino has learned one thing from them- that even with the glamorous title attached to their names, they are still family. Satsuki and Sayumi are pretty much normal siblings whenever they are together. They are way more humble and down-to-earth than most people he met in the entertainment industry. They don’t rely much on other people, contrary to what others perceived royals to be, and they treat their servants with respect and kindness.

No one knew what Nino has been up to these days, not even his closest friends. Seeing how the members seem to side more with Sho, he figured that he might need to keep this to himself, at least for now. Sayumi is pretending to be strong since the day Sho turned her down, but he knows that she’s deeply hurt by what he had said. Of course, her father’s condition is another reason why she badly needed a friend to rely on right now.

He doesn’t know why but since his first visit in the hospital, Nino swears to himself that he would do everything he can to help her, at least, makes her feel that someone’s there for her because that’s what she wanted and that’s what she needed.  The sadness of her face and the loneliness in her eyes is enough for Nino to give in to it. Sayumi never question his willingness to accompany her in taking care of father every single day and Nino was glad that he doesn’t have to go explain himself to her. She would just give him a sweet smile and say thank you every chance she gets and that’s more than enough for him, seeing her old smile is more than enough.

“Do you want to go to our concert?” He suddenly asked out of the blue after he took his turn on their virtual scrabble battle on his IPad.

Sayumi looked up from her own IPad, raising one eyebrow. “I think you’re asking the wrong person.”

“I’m not asking the wrong person. You’re the only one here.” Nino pointed out.

“He’s here.” She smiled while pointing to her father.

Nino laughed quietly. “Your father wouldn’t answer me even if I ask him.”

She entered the word ‘trivial’ as Nino creases his eyebrows. “Sho wouldn’t be happy to see me in the audience, don’t you think? I don’t want to ruin the atmosphere.”

He puts down his IPad on the table and said “There are going to be 70,000 people in attendance, if you want I’m going to seat you on the most unnoticeable part of the audience. I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to see you there.”

She chuckled softly. “Why do you want me to be there?”

“Since when was the last time you ever leave this room, Yumi?” Nino asked and she lowered her face. “If you’re not here, you’re isolating yourself in your bedroom at home. Can you just at least leave everything behind for a while?”

“I can’t be when he’s like this.” She glances at her father.

“Yumi, I’m sure your father would want you to rest for a while too.”

Her eyes are welling up in tears and before she can break down, she quickly puts on a smile. “And you think an Arashi concert is the best place for me to go and leave everything behind?” she raised an eyebrow.

Nino laughs. Maybe it’s not a good idea after all. “I was just thinking that maybe I can invite Satsuki-san and her daughter since she said that the little girls like us... Anyways, just forget the concert, let me take you somewhere nice and quiet where you can relax and have fun. I will just get tickets for your sister’s family.”

“You don’t have to go to that great length for them.”

“Well, I can easily get tickets so why not get some for them?” Nino said nonchalantly and Sayumi didn’t argue any further.

“Thank you, then. You’re being so nice to us, Kazu, really. Going here everyday just to accompany me…”

“Don’t mention it.” He shyly replied. “I’m just being a good friend and I enjoy being here with you.”

“You do?” She asked in surprise.

“It’s better than staying at home all by myself.” Nino answered. “At least I have someone to play games with.” He looks down on his IPad and his turn in their scrabble game is patiently waiting for him. “But let’s quit playing scrabble already. My English vocabulary isn’t that good, you know! I’m at a disadvantage here.” He whined with a pout and they both burst out laughing.

Having Nino around is definitely something she’s thankful for, he makes her forget the heavy burden she’s carrying on her shoulders. Whenever he’s there, the atmosphere is light and easy, he always tries to make her laugh with his antics as that’s his way of comforting her.

----------

It was already a few minutes past eleven in the evening when Nino decided to go home. Just as he is walking to the backdoor to avoid the paparazzi outside the front lobby, he was startled when someone called out his name.

“Nino!!” A girl’s voice he knew very well called from behind him.

Please not her, not her please. He continued to repeat those words like a mantra silently before turning around to see her.

But the mantra didn’t work, the person is exactly who he thought she is. “Yana.” He uttered as soon as he saw her grinning at him, running towards him. “What are you doing here?” He said before she can be the first one to ask that question.

“Visited a friend who just had a baby.” Yana answered nonchalantly. “Don’t tell you didn’t know that.”

“Ah, yeah, that one. I saw it in the tabloids this morning.” He remembered the headlines he stumbled upon this morning when he arrived at rehearsals.

“What are you doing here, Nino? If you’re going to tell me that we’ve visited the same person-”

“No, I didn’t.” Nino cuts her off not knowing what to say next as he watched Yana anticipating an answer.

“Then why are you here?” Yana insisted.

Just when Nino was about to say some lie he made up in that short awkward silence, the truth came barging into their conversation.

“Kazu!” Sayumi called out as Yana spins quickly to see who that person might be. “You forgot your phone.” Sayumi noticed that he got company as she lowered down her voice and gave the girl a friendly smile. Yana is gob smacked, her jaw is dropped in surprise and Nino had to slap her on the shoulder to go back to her senses.

“Ah. Thanks.” That’s all he can say as he shoves his phone into his jeans pocket. “You know Yana, right? Jun-kun’s girlfriend.”

“Of course.” Sayumi said in a pleasant tone. “Jun always talks about you while they were in Paris.”

Yana lifted an eyebrow at how friendly she called her boyfriend.

“I mean, Matsumoto-san.” Sayumi corrected herself as Nino laughs quietly seeing how awkward things going.

“Nice to meet you, Izumi-san.”

Yana smiled back. “Please, just call me Yana and it was nice meeting you too, Princess Sayumi.” Yana offered her hand and Sayumi gladly took it for a handshake.

“Just call me Sayumi.” She said as the two girls smile at each other before looking at Nino to give some explanation.

----------

“I can’t believe that you still remained friends with him after he crashed Jun-kun’s dream to marry you in the near future.” Nino opens up to Yana as they seat in a wine bar twenty minute drive away from the hospital. She invited him over, hoping to get more info about his apparently secret friendship with the Princess. “Just when Jun-kun informed Johnny-san that you’re planning to get married, that bastard comes ruining poor Jun with his shotgun wedding.”

But Nino is busy talking about last season’s headlines to shy away from the real reason why she asked him out to drink tonight.

“Jun and I have already talked about it. We are not in a hurry to get married, you know. We’re just planning to, it doesn’t mean that we want to rush into it right away. With marriage come a lot of preparation and all that stuff.”

“Well, tell that to your friend then.” Nino wittily replied.

Yana just laughed as she sips her wine. “That’s not what we’re here for Nino.” She meaningfully said. “You have a lot of explaining to do...”

“You’ve seen enough and I told you what you need to hear, I don’t need to explain further.”

“I don’t think so.” Yana shakes her head. “All you said to me is that you came to visit her father and that’s all.”

“Because that is all, Yanyan. Stop interrogating me.” Nino dismissed her.

“She calls you Kazu.” Yana puts in. “I’ve known you all these years and I never once called you that.”

“She calls everyone with their first names. Jun, Satoshi, Masaki and Sho, naturally, she will call me Kazu. That’s just the way she is, very westernized.” Nino glimpsed at a suspecting Yana. “Just like you. Aren’t you very American too, Yanyan?”

Yana lifted up her hand in defeat. “Fine. I get that part. But why are you so shocked when you saw me? Like you’ve been busted or something… It’s all over your face, Nino.”

Trust it to Yana to notice everything. She knows him that well.

“I’ve been visiting everyday for the past two weeks.” Nino finally gives in. He should consider bumping into Yana as a blessing in disguise. He needs to talk to someone about this secret. “Without the knowledge of anyone, not even the members or my closest friends. Now, you’re the only one who knows.”

“Why?” She asked, slightly confused. “I mean, why visit in secret? Is it because of Sho-kun?”

“The members seem to side with Sho-chan, don’t you think?” Nino asked and the reaction on Yana’s face seems to agree with him. “I don’t think they will react very well when they learned that I’m being nice with the girl who breaks Sho-chan’s heart.”

“But I’m sure they will understand if you’re giving a helping hand. After all, the six of you have been friends at one point.” Yana pointed out.

“I don’t want to anger Sho-chan more. He’s pretending to be okay but we all know him, he keeps everything to himself but when it all burst out, he’s going to be in rage and fury.”

Yana rests one elbow on the table and swipes off her hair behind her ears, smiling softly. “Of course. These secret trips to see his girlfriend’s father will anger him for sure.”

The two kept silent for a while, taking time to finish their first glass of wine.

“What is your reason for doing all of these, Nino?” Yana suddenly asked and Nino felt like he was caught in a huge trap. Yana will interrogate everything and she would not stop until she gets what she wants. “Is it because you feel bad about what happened to her family and with her relationship with Sho-kun? Do you just want to make her feel better?”

“Of course.” Nino answered firmly, hiding the nervousness. “What else could it be?”

Yana smiled at him meaningfully and Nino dismissed her by rolling his eyes.

“What?” Nino irritatingly asked. “Your smile means something. Spill it out.” He playfully slaps her in the arm.

“I just remember something.” Yana pursed her lips to avoid excessive smiling. “Do remember that night when you saw me in the Fuji TV parking lot in the middle of the night? Crying and drunk-”

“Stop right there!” Nino puts his hands over her mouth to make her stop. “I clearly remember everything that night so stop reminding me of the details.”

“I just realized that you will go all lengths whatever it is for the girl you like. You’ll suddenly turn soft and caring towards them.”

“What are you saying?” Nino shakes his head and laughed. “That I like her?!”

“Maybe…”

He laughs boisterously and clings to her wrist for support. “What made you say that when the only proof you have is that one night-”

Yana cuts him off. “I’m just saying, Nino, is that this is not like you. When you dated that model girl last year, you couldn’t care less about her, you prioritize your friends more than her. You refuse to hang out with her friends or even to meet her family. You avoid those things because you thought that it’s troublesome. And suddenly, here you are, going out of your way to drop by the paparazzi-stricken hospital everyday just to accompany and offer support to her and her family.”

Nino narrowed his eyes and gulped down his wine before returning to face her, this time, seriousness is seen on his face. “My heart clenches when I saw her crying desperately for Sho-chan’s forgiveness. And it clenches even more when she said that she doesn’t have someone to be there for support, that she’s all alone in this and she wishes that Sho-chan is there holding her hand, hugging her in his arms. But reality sucks so much, the man she loves turns his back on her without letting her explain herself.”

Yana can see the fierceness in his eyes, the slight anger towards Sho for treating her wrongly and the hidden affection he had for her. After these years of friendship, Yana is only one of the very few people who can read Nino by simply looking into his eyes, she already mastered that skill.

“I don’t intend to replace Sho-chan in her life nor do I want to outdo him. To be honest, I don’t know what I really feel towards her. All I know is that I want to be there for her right now.”

***A/N: Just a little back story on Yana and Nino for those of you who didn't get to read the previous fic. They used to have a "thing" before she met Jun. Nino fell in love with her but she fell in love with Jun and Jun fell in love with her too. Poor Nino. LOL. :p
Also, the "friend" of Yana that they are talking about here is Akanishi Jin. He's pretty relevant in the previous fic. haha! :)
