Chapter Twenty - Six: Towards an Uncertain Future

The Akasaka Estate grounds is immensely huge it would take more than a day to see the whole property. Beyond the high brick walls fenced around the area, it feels like a whole new different world inside. He remembered while he was still studying, he would pass this area every morning from his house on the way to Keio, wondering how it looks inside and finally now, he’s allowed to see what’s beyond it. Some areas of the Tokyo Imperial Palace where the Emperor and Empress resides are open to the public but this certain Imperial Family property are strictly guarded by a bunch of uniformed men and restricts entry to the public. The estate houses the Togu Palace where the Crown Prince’s family resides. Aside from the Togu Palace, two guests’ house and four family residences are also located inside.

Sho is immediately escorted by two black patrol cars once he enters the gate that Sayumi instructed him to go, one on the front and the other behind his car. A great number of trees and tended grassland are seen on both his sides and it seems to never end until he saw the first of the many structure inside the compound, a three-story contemporary infrastructure, a bit modern looking compared to the Imperial Palace. The patrol car he’s following drives into the covered entrance of the mansion and he saw Kiyomizu-san waiting by the glass doors. He suddenly remembers this familiar looking entrance, this is where the Crown Prince does his yearly public greeting along with the Crown Princess and their two young daughters and it’s being televised by the local TV stations. And then it occurred to him, he’s been seeing the girl he loves since she was a kid, through the television. He laughed softly at the sudden thought.

Sayumi seemed a bit aloof when she was a kid, now that he recalls. He remembers watching the Imperial Family on New Year’s Day with his own family at home. The eldest daughter is always smiling and waving to the cameras, a real darling of the media while the younger one never lets go of her mother’s hand, she never smiles, barely shows her face and is always hiding behind her mother.

“Sakurai-san, it was nice to have you here in the palace.” Kiyomizu courteously greeted him as he comes out of his car while a chauffeur kindly took his keys from him to park his car.

“It was nice to be here, Kiyomizu-san.” Sho replied just as courteous. The truth is, he is very much overwhelmed to be here.

The inside of the palace is much more overwhelming than outside. After the rather simple looking foyer, they step into the massive living room. The feel of the whole house is very modern with its white painted walls and a display of numerous paintings, carpeted marble floor, high-ceiling with some intricate details etched by the corners, big chandeliers, posh furniture and oversized windows reflecting the view of the garden outside, he feel like he’s inside some castle in Europe.

“Princess Sayumi will be with you in a few minutes.” Kiyomizu informed him after he was seated in the living room. Two maids in uniform quickly came to offer him tea and cakes.

He’s still not used to hear people calling her Princess Sayumi, nor is he used to calling her by that name. He would still call her Sophie and sometimes, he would just mutter a soft ‘hey’ to get her attention and she would chuckle quietly upon hearing it.

A sound of hurried footsteps echoed through the living room and he saw her running down the long flight of stairs to his left. She’s wearing a sleeveless yellow eyelet dress that’s very summerish, he thought. Her hair is tied up in a messy bun and she is wearing a flip-flops.

“That’s very un-Princess-like, don’t you think?” He teased her. She always wears those boring sleeved tops and dresses and below ankle length skirts all the time, saying that the Imperial Household Agency told her that she should dress accordingly because the public eyes are on her.

“I can dress on my own when I’m at home.” She answered mockingly as she brushes off the hair that falls on her eyes. “And besides, the heat is killing me.” It’s already the second half of September yet the heat feels like it’s still the middle of July.

Kiyomizu and the housemaids already left and Sho quickly steals a peck on the lips and her cheeks turn into a bright pink when he did that.

“What?” He asked while laughing.

“I feel embarrassed.” She confessed shyly.

He is still laughing. “No one’s around.”

Sayumi shakes her head and pointed to a small device hanging by the wall. “See that? That’s a security camera and tons of that are installed in the house… well, except our bedrooms and the bathrooms.”

Suddenly, Sho feel like sinking down the ground in embarrassment. “You have security cameras in your own house?”

“You know how tight security is in our family. It is, literally, everywhere.” She looked down on the tray of tea and cake and quickly picks it up. “Let’s go outside.” She pulled him with her free hand and strides off to the garden.

The landscaped garden in their house is like a park of its own. The wind feels refreshing with the trees surrounding the palace, there are plants and different variety of flowers blooming and also, there’s a big swimming pool and a jacuzzi in the center. There’s even a fish pond a little further down the garden, she says.

Sayumi placed the tray on the table beside the pool as they sat on the comfy pool chairs.

“So there’s no camera here?” Sho looks around for any small camera device placed on the walls.

“There is.” She stood up again and walks to the side where she points at the camera. “But I can do something about it.” She pushes a long branch of the tree and blocks the small lens of the camera with the leaves, Sho roars in laughter.

“You’re sneaky.” He commented after she sits back beside him.

“I just saw it from my sister.” She defended herself. “When she was in high school, she met her first boyfriend and he would sometimes visit here. You know her, she’s the sneaky and mischievous one. They would go here and she would pull that trick on the camera. The IHA never knew that she’s outsmarting them.”

Sho laughed at her story. “Rika-chan is likely to take after her mother, huh?” He remembers how the little girl is so full of energy, always laughing and smiling and she’s very sweet, although he have to admit, Rika-chan takes after her aunt with the sunshine-like smile.

“I bet.” She smiled. “I can see my sister in her.”

And he can see it too. He suddenly remembers that little girl by the front glass doors again, smiling and waving to the cameras and the little sister who’s shy and aloof, hiding behind her mother. He looked at Sayumi who is pouring him a cup of tea.

“When I arrived at your front door, I remember the times when the Crown Prince would do the yearly public greeting there with his family.” He smiled as bit her lower lip in recollection. “It is weird to say that I’ve been watching you since you were a kid?”

“You probably saw me since I was born.” Sayumi added with a smile. “My first public appearance was at that door.” Now that she reminded that, he probably does.

Sayumi’s face fall down as if she remembered something she doesn’t want to remember. Her lower lip is jutting out as she plays with the hem of her dress.

“Something wrong?” Sho placed a comforting hand on hers as she forced a smile.

“I miss my mother…” She mumbled quietly and Sho feels guilty for opening that up. “I never saw her before she died and I will regret it for the rest of my life.” Sho pulled her closer to him and placed an arm around her shoulder. “Since the accident, I realize that I’m just being selfish. I was so afraid to come back here because it just brings horrible memories. I was just thinking of myself. I never think about them, my parents. I’m sure they want me by their side and yet they never say it out loud because they know that I dreaded this place. Even if they are lonely without me, they never speak of it because they are looking out for me. They know that I’m happier in a faraway place and they leave it at that, even if it that means that they will endure the longing for their daughter.”

“I am so stupid, Sho.” The tears just flow endlessly on her eyes as he tightened his hug on her. “They did everything for my sake and yet I never did a single thing for them… And my mother died without me doing anything for her… I can never bring her back even if want to. Even if I want to change everything, I don’t have the chance anymore.”

Sho is thinking of the right thing to say, to make her feel better, to make her feel that she doesn’t need to burden herself with that regret. “That’s what parents do, they love you unconditionally and they don’t expect anything in return. I’m sure your mother didn’t even think any of that. You were happy and living the life that you wanted. Your mother must be contented by that…With a daughter as smart and exceptional as you are and with all the accomplishments in everything you do, they are more than proud of you. For a parent, it’s the greatest gift they can ever ask from their child.”

Of all people, Sakurai Sho knows that very well. His own parents are far more strict and pressing than hers. As a child, they let him do the things they wanted even if he doesn’t like to do it. They were hard on him that it makes him want to wish for parents like hers. Her parents are loving and unrestraint, they would sacrifice everything for her happiness and for her peace of mind, his parents never did, their happiness are supposed to be his happiness, he realized.

“And besides, your father is still here, it’s not yet too late.” He reminded her.

She just cried even more with the mention of her father and Sho tried to stop her by stroking her back and kissing her on the side of her forehead.

“I am just going to disappoint him when he wakes up.” She said between sobs. “If he asked for my mother once he opens his eyes, what am I supposed to tell him?” Sho’s heart felt like crushing inside. It’s a completely difficult task for Sayumi to tell her father that his wife is gone.

It occurs to him that he doesn’t like the sound of her cry. He remembered when they are in Paris and for a time she was sad and lonely that he doesn’t know why. Sometimes, she would just cry in his arms and he would plead her to stop crying because it is breaking his heart.

“Please don’t cry, Yumi. I hate to see you cry.” Sho pleads, just like how he pleads before. And for the first time, he called her by her name, a name he badly wanted to call her but he was too awkward and embarrassed to say.

She smiled beneath the tears when she heard him call her by her name. She wanted to hear that from him, just to be sure that he completely accepts who she really is now, that’s she’s Princess Sayumi and he is absolutely fine with that.

Sayumi wiped her tears but she stayed by Sho’s shoulder, their hands are tightly together. “You know, my father wanted me to be like him. He’s a registered lawyer, although he doesn’t practice being one.”

“I know that one.” Sho mumbled in reply while gently caressing her arm.

“When I was young, when someone asked me what I want to become when I grow up, people expect me to say that I want to be an Empress, but I would always say that I would want to be a lawyer like my father and people would be so shocked all the time.” Sho can see that there was a faint smile on her face. “Back then, I doesn’t even know what a lawyer does but I wanted to become one because my father is one.”

A single tear fell from her eyes again but she quickly wiped it away.

“I’m just going to disappoint him again, Sho…” She mumbled and Sho doesn’t understand what she meant. “I got kicked out from law school.” She confessed and Sho couldn’t find his words. “When I found out that they got into an accident, I just ride the next flight back home I didn’t even bother to inform the university that I’m leaving… Just yesterday, I got a call saying that I’m no longer a student there because I exceeded the allowed number of absences. Being a scholar, that’s a reasonable cause for expulsion.”

She worked hard for that scholarship and that’s the sole reason why they broke up but now, it all came to dusk. Her dream school kicked her out even before they see how amazing she is.

“You dream doesn’t just end there, you know.” Sho tried to sound positive. “There are a lot of schools out there that will accept you. I bet they will fight for you once they saw your grades in university.” He smiled while squeezing her hand. “You can apply for Keio or Todai, wherever you want… just stay here with me.” He added a bit gently.

Sayumi raised her head up from his shoulder and smiled. “You just wanted me to stay, Sakurai.” She playfully pinched his cheeks.

“Of course I wanted you to stay. I don’t want to lose you again.” He said in all honesty.

Sayumi sighed and returned to laying her head on his shoulder. “I don’t know, Sho. Still haven’t thought about law school or anything about my future. Maybe after my father wakes up and recovers, I will talk to him and asked for his opinion.”

Sho admired how Sayumi valued her father’s views and opinions. It may be happy sight to see them together, father and daughter pair happily chatting about anything.

“I’m sure your father will understand what happened with the law school. Don’t worry about it.” Sho assured her. “And besides, you are stronger than that. Don’t let that affect you, okay?” He placed a soft kiss on the top her head.

Sho slipped an arm around her waist and took her left hand on his and he saw a familiar silver ring around her finger. He smiled remembering how he gave it to her. He runs his fingers around its shining rock as she smiles at him.

“I never took it off, just so you know.” She told him smugly.

He laughed softly. “Do you still want to marry me?”

Sayumi took her head off his shoulders to face him, laying her soft hands on both his cheeks. “Of course, I do. What makes you think that I don’t?”

“After everything that I did to you-”

“You wouldn’t be here right now if I don’t, Sakurai Sho. I love you. I will always love you. And I will always dream to be your wife.”

Sho sometimes wonder if Sayumi is even human. She is just perfect in every aspect. She forgives those who wronged her, she doesn’t hold grudges, she helps those people in need in every way she can, she loves wholeheartedly, she’s the most humble and kindest person he ever met and on top of all that, she is a blue blooded Princess.

He pulled her in towards him until her face is just a few centimeters away from his. He looked at her face admiringly as he brushes off the hair falling off her bun. “You never fail to amaze me, Princess Sayumi.” He tried to sound witty as she beamed at him. “I love you so much and I can’t wait to be your husband.” He proclaimed happily as he gently kissed her on the lips. Sayumi wrapped both arms around his neck as she jumps on top of his lap, never leaving his lips. Minutes later, they are completely making out in the palace garden.

Her mobile phone is ringing for the nth time but she’s ignoring it and just continuously pleasuring Sho with her kisses until he breaks away from her and grabs her phone on the table.

Sho looked at the receiver and reads the name of the caller. “It’s your sister, it might be important.” He told her, almost breathlessly. Sayumi wilfully took the phone from his hand and answers the call.

As soon as she said hello, she never mutter a single word after that. Her face changed seriously as she almost froze with what she heard.

“What’s wrong?” Sho shakes her by the shoulder and she quickly gazes into his eyes.

“My father…” She mumbled almost inaudibly. “He’s awake.”
