Chapter Twenty - Nine: The Other Side of Royalty

Sayumi can feel the tension even if she’s several floors above the madness outside, it’s crazier now compared to the past two months they camped the hospital grounds. The media has gotten more violent, fighting amongst themselves with their cameras, crossing the metal barrier to try to get an exclusive scoop in hopes to see Sho and Sayumi inside, some of them even figured out their secret backdoor entrance until the word got out to everyone else. Now, both front and back entrance are filled with people.

Her arrival this morning was nothing but chaos. She got mobbed as soon as she exits the car that her tripled security group resulted to some violence, elbowing and shoving off people who dared to go near their Princess. She also spotted some fans among the crowd, young girls in their high school uniforms jammed in between the aggressive media, screaming words she couldn’t comprehend but she knew they are not praising her because they look at her with disgust, some even crying their hearts out holding out an uchiwa with Sho’s face.

It has gotten out of hand overnight and she didn’t expect this fuss. This is not a story about a Princess and her boyfriend but rather, a story about a famous celebrity coming out to the public with his girlfriend, who happened to be a Princess - there’s a big difference there and now she finally understand Sho’s popularity. He’s a big-shot celebrity, his fans even tried to threaten her. But Sayumi is not the one to threat out all the people in her family, she had enough of those kind of bullying in elementary school that teenage girls’ threats didn’t even shake her off. They just love Sho too much, she told herself, and she love him too much also, if only she can assure of that to those teenage girls.

Proving more of Sho’s celebrity status, reporters are hungry to get a scoop out of him and see how his agency will react to this, how they will punish him for actually dating someone when in fact, it is an unspoken rule that he shouldn’t be dating in public. They were curious how he will adjust to a life with a blue-blooded girl, how the Imperial family will welcome him into their lives and how the revelation of their relationship marks the biggest media fest in both entertainment and society circle.

There’s just too much speculations, write-up and personal opinions on newspapers, tabloid magazine and internet blogs that she got too overwhelmed. How a simple holding hands will get this kind attention, not just in Japan but also the neighbouring countries.

Sayumi closes her laptop as she spreads on the couch, closing her eyes and freeing her mind from obstructive thoughts. Sho hasn’t called her since last night and she wonders how he copes up with the media blast this morning. Did his agency actually punish him like what some article said, she wonders.

She puts both hands on her stomach as she tried to breathe slowly, taking her mind away from the stress this chaos gives her. She can hear Rika-chan laughing endlessly from behind, probably being tickled by her grandfather. She smiled at the sound of their laughters and it helps her calm herself.

She slowly opens her eyes and got up from the couch to join them. Rika-chan is comfortably lying on her grandfather’s lap and Satsuki is sitting on a chair beside them as they watch this children’s show on the television. Sayumi pulled a chair beside her sister as she watches how happy her father is, he probably hasn’t had this kind of rest in a long while, he’s been working nonstop since the start of the year that she couldn’t even get to talk to him whenever she would call home.

The sudden thought made her think of her mother, their talks over the phone has increased in the months before the accident, sometimes she would even wonder why her mother would suddenly call her just to say that she misses her. If she only knew that she wouldn’t be able to see her anymore, she would tell her every day that she loves her, that she appreciates all the sacrifices she did for her.

“Ahhh!! Arashi!” Rika-chan squeals admiringly as she glued her eyes on the television. Sayumi can’t help but smile at how adorable she is, the little girl alone can get her father to a quick full recovery just by looking at her.

On the television, a preview of the next episode for Arashi’s regular show came up when the children’s show went on a commercial break. The members are wearing silly costumes and running around the stage like they’re doing a school play of some sort. The camera swifts past Sho who’s cosplaying like a little school girl complete with pigtails, kiddie back pack and a short skirt.

Sayumi puts a hand on her mouth to prevent from erupting in a fit of laughter. Good thing it’s only a preview and he’s shown in just a split of a second, otherwise, she’ll go crazy laughing.

“What comes to your mind when you see him wearing ridiculous costumes on their shows?” Satsuki is laughing as well as she asked her sister.

Sayumi looked over at her sister and she can also see her father looking at her. Now she felt really embarrassed if he saw that preview.

“He’s interesting.” Her father commented, snorting. Now, her father and her sister is making fun of her.

“Laugh all you want, you guys.” Sayumi said, rolling her eyes. “He’s cool about it and I admire him for that and besides, he looks like he’s enjoying every bit of it.” She shrugged as she leaned back on the chair. They’re still laughing and even Rika-chan is joining them, as if she understands what they are talking about.

Sayumi’s phone suddenly vibrates in her hand and the man of the hour appears on her screen. She smiled and quickly stood and excuses herself after pinching Rika-chan playfully on the nose.

She’s been waiting for a call from him since this morning and she’s starting to worry about him but now, she can finally take her mind off it.

“I’ve been waiting for your call, Sakurai.” She answered playfully while leaning over the corridor walls outside. She heard him chuckling a bit, though it sounded a bit tired and weary.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you worry.” He apologizes and she can confirm from his voice that he is having a long day today. “It’s just that a lot of things had happened.” He sighed and Sayumi wishes that she’s by his side this very moment to comfort him.

“Indeed.” She answered, looking down on the ground and swaying her foot back and forth on the tiled floor. “How is it there on your side?”

Sho let out a sarcastic laugh and she can imagine him lying on some couch, running his fingers over his forehead. “Crazy and annoying. People are looking at me with this irritating smile on their faces, even our own staff.”

She can just imagine the annoyance on Sho’s face. He hated people who mingle on his personal life like they’re close enough to get him to talk. He’s very serious on putting that barrier between work and private life.

“Anyways…” He sighed again. “Am I allowed to come over?” He asked and a smile grew on her face. “I think I should meet you father... I’m sure he already saw the papers-”

“He’s looking forward to meeting you.” Sayumi cuts him off. She doesn’t want him to feel that her father is upset finding out everything about it on the newspapers.

“I’ll tell him that you’re coming over tonight. Just be a little careful, people are camping on every possible entrance of the hospital… Do you want an escort? Just to be safe. You might not come out it alive.” She suggested and she heard Sho laughing on the other line. She knows that the Imperial guards bothers him, he says that it’s awkward being followed 24/7.

It took Sayumi a little more time of convincing before Sho finally gave up arguing about the Imperial guard escorts. He doesn’t like to take advantage of the perks of dating someone of importance, he made that clear after they got back together. After seeing the situation at the hospital on the news, he figured that he might need a little back-up from them after all. Sayumi’s right, he might not get out of it alive.

It was already past dinner time when Sho arrived at the hospital, thanks to his escorts of over fifty men in black suits, he entered the hospital without a scratch. His manager cautiously reminded him to not let the media recognize him, for the Jimusho and the IHA doesn’t want another news article to handle. With Johnny-san still not updating them about his meeting with the Emperor, they all need to take extra precautions in dealing with the media.

Good thing it was pitch black at the backdoor entrance and the only light they have are the flashes of the cameras and mobile phones. Sho disguises himself with a trucker hat dropped down to his eyes, eyeglasses and a face mask. He was surrounded right away by the guards so the people didn’t get to see who he was.

He purposely walked slowly after he reached the floor, breathing in and out as he calm himself down. He’s just not just going to meet the Crown Prince tonight, he’s also going to be introduced to his girlfriend’s father. How nerve-wracking is that?

He finally reached the door and before he knocks, he took off his hat, eyeglasses and face mask. He fixed his clothes and made sure that he looks presentable. He softly knocked twice before he took another deep breath, he can feel his pulse racing in agitation.

It was opened by Kiyomizu, who welcomed him with a gentle smile. As he slowly walks inside, he saw little Rika-chan yelling his name and running towards him with a big smile plastered on her face. He squats down her level and opened his arms for a hug. She never lets go of him after that, she clings on to his shoulders and he carried her towards where everyone are.

It was a relief seeing the Crown Prince out of his bed, without the scary machines and tubes attached to him. He is seating on a wheel chair as they surround a small table, eating their dinner. Sayumi quickly get up from her seat to approach him and when she asked Rika-chan to go down, the little girl is determined to stick to Sho for the rest of the night.

Sayumi took his left hand while his right arm is carefully carrying a very happy Rika-chan. The Crown Prince welcomed him with a small smile as soon as he reached them. He bowed as respectable as he can while trying to balance the little girl’s weight on his grip.

“Sakurai-san, it was nice to finally meet you.” The Crown Prince said calmly, gesturing to Sho to seat on the empty seat beside Sayumi.

“I’m very relieved to see you all well now, Your Highness. I am wishing for your full recovery.” Sho quickly replied as the two sisters laughed at how proper he was.

He never met anyone of Imperial importance before, he never addressed anyone as ‘Your Highness’ but he know that he should call him that out of respect, he’s talking to the Crown Prince, after all. But he didn’t understand why the two ladies mocked him, even the Crown Prince is laughing softly.

“You are the first man Sayumi introduced to us but Satsuki brought quite a few boyfriends before, am I right?” The Crown Prince eyed his eldest daughter meaningfully as she rolled her eyes at him playfully. “And all of her past boyfriends called me Hoshihito-san, to my surprise.” He returned to Sho who’s laughing warily.

He leaned forward to Sho as if he’s about to whisper something. “Apparently she told them to call me that.” He said on a low voice but his daughters still heard what he said.

Finally, Satsuki spoke. “They’re meeting my father. I don’t want them to think that they’re meeting the Crown Prince so they should all be prim and proper and formal. Even if my father’s parents are the Emperor and Empress of this country, we’re just a typical family. My parents, Yumi and I, we’re all normal around each other and I want them to feel the normalcy between us.” She explained proudly and her father is nodding his head in agreement.

Sho felt Sayumi’s hands slipping on his arm as she gently squeeze him, telling him to not be so tense.

“You can call me the same way, Sakurai-san.” The Crown Prince taps Sho’s arms gently as he assured him with a smile.

He doesn’t know what’s with the smile of everyone in their family but it exudes natural warmth. The first time he saw Sayumi’s smile, he was immediately mesmerize by it. With Satsuki, he quickly felt her sincerity and with their father, Sho suddenly felt calm. His pulse started to subside and his chest is finally at ease.

Sayumi’s family welcomed him with open arms and they treat him nicely like he’s already one of them. He instantly gets along with her father and he can see Sayumi a lot in him. The way they talk is similar and also their views on education, the government and basically, about Japan. Sayumi, being a politics major, can go on and on about politics, her knowledge about the topic is so broad she can join a debate team. Sho remembers their time in Paris when he would help her in her studies by discussing about a certain topic, he knows it sounds really boring but he love seeing her being so serious about a certain thing. Her intelligence and determination is something he’s proud of and now, he finally saw where she got all of it.

Her father said that Sayumi is very much like him while Satsuki takes after their mother. Sho didn’t get the chance to meet the Crown Princess and he regrets not having an opportunity, he would love to see how they are as a whole family. It would have been more fun if she’s still around. From his impression on the Princess based on her public appearances, she’s very humble and outspoken. She’s also known for her charitable works in and out of the country. She’s usually very candid in front of the cameras, always laughing and talking to the media while the Crown Prince stood beside her with just a smile.

Everyone got too indulged in talking and laughing that they didn’t realize how late it was until Sayumi reminded that it’s almost midnight. Rika-chan already fell asleep beside Sho and her mother quickly took her and placed her at the empty couch.

“You should rest now, Father.” Sayumi stood up to assist him to his bed but he waved his hand on her.

“I’m still fine, Yumi.” He told his daughter who narrowed her eyes on him. “I’ve been lying on that bed for two months.”

Sayumi puts down her guard easily as she returned beside Sho. “Only for a few more minutes, okay?” She told him strictly.

Her father nods agreeing. “Now that you have Sakurai-san in your life, I suppose you would want to stay here for good now, Yumi.” He suddenly caught Sayumi by surprise.

Sayumi and Sho exchanged looks and he was smiling cheekily at her. “I was telling her that a few days ago. She should stay and continue law school here.” His hand found hers and Sayumi is biting her lower lip.

Her father is still awaiting a response and so is Sho. “Well… I think I should stay.” She loved how the two men in front of her began smiling from ear to ear. “Actually, earlier this morning, I submitted an online application to Tokyo University. I’m planning to return to law school next semester.”

After that talk with Sho about her future and after her father finally wakes up, she’s been doing a lot of careful thinking. She needs to make decisions, decisions that she knew would change her life tremendously. With her mother gone, she’s the only one her father can lean on now. She needs to take care of him and accompany him because she knew that he would be extremely lonely once he got home. So, she decided to stay by his side, help him cope up with this new life he’s taking without the woman he loves. She also love to stay by Sho’s side, she can’t imagine being separated from him again.

Sayumi is more than glad that she came up with that decision, seeing how happy she have made the two most important men in her life with that choice, she knew that it’s all worth it.
