Final Chapter

Exactly three months after the accident, The Crown Prince is finally given permission by his doctors to come home and recover. His two daughters take turns in taking care of him, accompanying him every minute to make sure he doesn’t get lonely in their expansive palace. Sakurai Sho sometimes come over, usually late at night after his work ends. Satsuki’s husband and his granddaughter, Rika-chan also visits him frequently.

Just last weekend, everyone gathered and they had a small thanksgiving dinner, Satsuki and her family and Sayumi and Sho are all present. Just in an instant, he suddenly felt that his family grew bigger with Sayumi coming home and Sho being the new addition to their family. But even though his family seems bigger now, he still feels a little empty.

He can’t help but think about his Crown Princess everyday, especially since he arrived back to the palace. He always comes home to her waiting arms, greeting him with a smile on her face. But now, she is gone and he will never be able to see that smile again.

Sayumi has been trying to fill the hole her mother left, tending to his needs everyday, preparing his breakfast and making sure he takes his medicines on time.  He is very grateful, of course, but somehow, it still feels empty and Sayumi can see that he’s missing her more now that he’s home more than when he’s still confined at the hospital.

“It’s a new beginning.”  She told him one night as she assists him to bed. Surely, it is. After everything that has happened, the unfortunate tragedy that occurred and the problems they faced, they are still here as a family, giving each other support. The events in the past months only made them stronger and united, she realized.

~~~
Sayumi arrived home one afternoon greeted by the queue of Imperial guard patrol cars at their palace estate. Just outside their home’s front entrance, she saw the official state car used by her grandfather. She hurriedly walks inside to look for him when Kiyomizu appears before her.
“Grandfather is here?” She asked hastily.
“Yes, he is, Princess.” Kiyomizu answers calmly. “He’s talking to the Crown Prince privately at his study room.”
“I need to see him, Kiyomizu.” She took a step only to be stopped by Kiyomizu by the arm. “Why are you stopping me? I need to talk to him.”
“His Imperial Majesty strictly ordered to keep his conversation with Crown Prince to be private. No one’s allowed inside. It’s just the two of them there, Princess.”
Sayumi clicked her tongue in irritation. “More than being in a private conversation with my father, I should be the one he needed to talk to.” She said aggressively. “You know that, right? Kiyomizu?”
The butler thought in silence for a while before he gives way for the Princess to pass the hallway.
Sayumi runs upstairs to her father’s study room as Kiyomizu watches her silently. When she reached the door, she paused to collect herself before opening the knob as quietly and gently not to disturb them. She then hesitated if she should interrupt when she heard them talking.
“What if I approved of that Sakurai Sho to be her Prince escort? Will she agree to ascend the throne?” She heard her grandfather said. Did their conversation have come to a point where he desperately comes into this decision just for her to agree on his wishes?
“She’s marrying Sakurai-san because of love and they decided to marry sooner because she doesn’t want to take any part in the change of succession. “Her father replied. “I respect her decision. Maybe Sayumi really need to get out of this, she’s suffered enough when she was young.”
“Sayumi was born into this family, I’m afraid she’s not allowed to have a choice.” Her grandfather said bitterly. Sayumi felt her hand gripping harder on the knob. “She’s my granddaughter, the Crown Prince’s legitimate child and the rightful heir.”
It took her father to take a while before he replies as he stares into the ground while rubbing his chin, thinking. “I raised Sayumi knowing that she’ll always have a choice.” He said firmly. “She makes crucial life changing decision by her own, my wife and I never influences her in any way.”
“Well, maybe that’s where you’re wrong in raising them.” The Emperor puts in. “You never instilled in their minds that they born of Royal means. That someday, in the future, they might lead this country-”
“They didn’t have that future until you decided that Sayumi is worthy of one.” The Crown Prince interrupted determinedly. “Remember when Sayumi was badly mistreated as a child because she was born a girl? Remember when a male child is given much priority than any female children born in this family?” His voice echoed higher.
“That’s why I’m making things right.”
“You’re too late, Father.” The Crown Prince answered calmer than earlier. “Sayumi already decided on her future and an illustrious title of Empress doesn’t include in that. I give her my full support and I hope you will to.”
There was silence and Sayumi is frozen in her spot at the door. She cannot move her feet nor can she take her hands off the knob.
“I guess my visit is done here.” Her grandfather spoke again. “And I’m afraid it didn’t end well as I imagined.” She heard footsteps approaching and her feet willingly moved away.
She is standing in the middle of the hallway when she saw her grandfather exiting the study room. Their eyes met for a quick moment until the Emperor steps forward. His old age has gotten into him as he walks slowly than the last time she remembered.
Sayumi remained motionless, she can’t move nor can she find her voice to speak.
“You could have made a wonderful Empress, Sayumi.” Her grandfather said and still she can’t find her words. “We have high hopes for you, your parents and me. Sadly, we won’t be able to witness that. I hope you’re happy with your decision.” He added before he walks away to the staircase.
----------
“My grandfather was here earlier.” Sayumi said out of the blue as Sho and her walks along the palace garden after dinner.
“The Emperor?” Sho asked, twitching his eyebrows in slight confusion.
Sayumi laughs at him. “Of course.” She replied. “Who else would my grandfather be?”
Sho laughs along. “I was just wondering why you didn’t tell me earlier. I mean, it’s the Emperor and he’s like the biggest threat left right now.” He puts in meaningfully and Sayumi nods in understanding what he meant.
“What happened then?”
“I didn’t get to talk to him.” Sayumi answered. “He came to see my father and they talked.”
Sho waited for what she’s about to say next but it seems like she’s not disclosing any further.
“And?” Sho puts in carefully.
Sayumi gazed at him and smiled. “Father defended us, of course and they got into a slight argument…” She trailed, studying the reaction on his face. “I think Father won, though. In the end, he just left without concrete conclusion.” She raised an eyebrow remembering how the last moments of their conversation ended in a flash.
Sho takes her arms quickly and she was standing face to face with him in an instant. “What do you mean by that?” He asked with such hopeful eyes.
A smile slowly appears on her face. “Well, my grandfather is not entirely happy…” She started and then she shakes her head remembering something. “Actually, he is not happy at all. He told me he was disappointment that he will never see me as Empress.”
The hope in Sho’s eyes is slowly diminishing when she took his cheeks on her hands. “But he didn’t insist on what he wanted, surprisingly.” She told him with a small smile.
“Still he’s not approved of us.” Sho said, discouraged.
“He’ll come around.” Sayumi reassured him. “It may take a lot of time, though. But I’m positive that one day, Grandfather will come to accept my decision.”
Sho sighed dejectedly and Sayumi lifted his chin up.
“Hey, stop being all gloomy, Sakurai.” She told him. “My family loves you very much, things are settled with your parents and Johnny-san is okay with us going public… this wedding is coming through without problems. In a few months’ time, I’m going to be your wife. You should be happy.”
Sho nods his head and smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist as he pulled her closer. “I’m happy, Yumi. Thinking about you being my wife is enough to make me the happiest man in this planet.” He chuckled timidly, running his fingers in her lower back. “I was just wishing that your grandfather will also grant us his blessing.”
“Well, he is the Emperor of Japan, Sho.” Sayumi replied, dropping her arms around his neck. “The man isn’t that easy to please. Your charm won’t easily work with the most powerful man in this country.” She said wittily.
“He’ll come around, we’ll see to it. You know when Nee-chan got married he got so mad that he summoned her husband’s entire family at the palace.”
“Are you saying that to make me feel better?” Sho laughs.
“I’m just saying that he doesn’t like him at first as well. But Nee-chan told me that when Rika-chan was born, Grandmother wanted to see her and they went to the palace for a visit. Apparently, Grandfather was being all stubborn refusing to see them but in the end, he couldn’t resist not seeing his first great-granddaughter.”
Sho smirked as a thought crossed his mind. “Then we should give him his first great-grandson before Satsuki-san makes one ahead of us. You know that your family is so fond of male firstborns.” He puts in with a big smile on his face.
Sayumi’s eyebrows are knotted together as she gives him a pout. “I thought you’ll let me finish law school first?” She raised an eyebrow.
Sho continued to laugh. “I was just joking.” He said, brushing off the hair that falls on her face. “Until you graduate, the Emperor will have to wait for his great-grandson in four years’ time.”
He gazes at her bright face admiringly. Surely, Sayumi has gone through tough times since she arrived back here but now, it’s all over as she start anew. Vivid images of the first time he laid eyes on her flashes through his mind. That drunk girl at the bar badmouthing Matsumoto Jun never fails to amaze him every time.  And then he remembers that same girl he met at the corner-street café of Paris, the girl whose smile brights up his whole world. He’s happy that he’s finally seeing that same smile right now, brighter than the moon and stars above them.
He slowly inches closer, tightening the grip around her waist as he leans forwards for her lips. She unhooked her arm around his neck as she slowly caresses his cheeks, gladly kissing him back.
----------
The people gathered behind the nondescript door are all scrambling in front as Sakurai Sho watches them from the small opening, fighting for the best place to sit on this all important press conference.
“Are you ready, Sakurai-kun?” His manager appears from behind and Sho only manages a small nervous nod. “Okay, then. Let’s start.” He signaled for the staff handling the press people in the cramped hotel ballroom.
Seconds later, the door separating him from the media opens and his manager gently pushes him forward, leading him to the small makeshift stage, a small table and a single chair is placed in the middle.
As he makes his brief catwalk from the door to the stage, the blinding flashes of cameras welcomed him and the crowd of media started to scramble for position.
He took his time sitting in front of the anxious press people as he swipes the room with his eyes and lastly to the staff who came with him today, standing by the door and giving him smiles of encouragement.
He then picks up the microphone waiting on the table as he started his greeting.
“Good morning, everyone.” He trailed off nervously. “Thank you for coming over today. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu.” He makes a small bow to show appreciation.
More cameras flashes in front as a little noise from the crowd echoed the room.
“I called everyone today because I have an important announcement to make.” He continued, pausing for a while to clear his throat. “A few weeks ago, I shocked everyone when a picture was taken of me with Her Imperial Highness Princess Sayumi.” He surveys the room as they scuffle with the mention of Sayumi’s name.
“It took me a while to make an official announcement and for that I’m sorry for making everyone, especially the fans, worry all these time.” He slightly bowed his head to apologize. “Now, as I face everyone properly through this press conference, I gladly like to inform everyone that Princess Sayumi and I are seriously in a relationship.”
There wasn’t much of a reaction from the press. It’s as if they are already expecting him to announce that.
“I hope the fans, the media and everyone’s who been supporting me and Arashi will continue to look after me and the Princess from now on as well.” He gave them a sincere smile. The flashing of the cameras are still not over.
“I would also like to inform everyone of another important announcement.” He continued and he’s starting to feel nervous again. “I have known the Princess for a while now and I can honestly say that I have found the one I would want to spend my life with.”
The people inside the room are anxiously waiting for him to continue speaking. A tension-filled silence fills the air.
“That why…” He continued carefully, wary of the expectant eyes of the media. “Sayumi and I decided to get married a month from now.”
And it was chaos. Everyone is starting to ask questions at the same time. The Jimusho bodyguards along with the hotel security are trying to calm everyone as they stood in front, preventing anyone near Sho.
When the commotion wouldn’t subside, his manager came up front and announces that they wouldn’t entertain questions from the media and asked everyone to quiet down and listen to the rest of Sho’s announcement.
“I am hoping for everyone’s support as I embark in this new journey that I’m taking and I am also hoping you’ll look for us kindly as we start a new life together.”  He concluded with a polite bow. “Thank you very much for coming today.”
As Sho is preparing to leave the stage, the press continued to storm him with questions.
“How did you meet the Princess?”
“Have you met the Imperial family?”
“Did you inform Johnny-san?”
“Is the Princess pregnant?”
“What does the Arashi members have to say about this?”
“Are you leaving Arashi after you get married?”
Sho signaled to his manager to spare a few minutes to answer a few questions thrown at him.
“I don’t want to create nasty rumors for not answering some questions so I would answer some important ones.” He announces as remained standing in the middle of the stage.
“Johnny-san is very supportive about my decision to get married. I don’t have a problem with him.” He answered one.
“I have a good relationship with the Crown Prince and yes, I’ve met a few members of the Imperial family. They are very nice and accommodating.” It’s true, though. He may not meet everyone yet, including the Emperor but as for the Empress and a few of her cousins and aunts, he already met them once at the Togu Palace.
“Sayumi is definitely not pregnant.” He laughed at the absurdity of that and why did he even bother answering. He guessed he doesn’t want to see rumors about a shotgun marriage so he clarified ahead of time.
“As for Arashi, I will never leave those four boys. The five of us will be Arashi for as long as we can. They are very supportive of me and Sayumi and I could not be any happier at how they accepted her into the Arashi family.”
He makes one final bow, put back the microphone on the table and let the security escort him out of the room as the media pushes their way forward to get a proper shot of his face for one last time.
January 2013
Sayumi cannot sit straight on the passenger’s seat, hissing every time they meet a stoplight and twisting and turning every minute since she entered Sho’s car.
“Do you feel something there? Itchy or something…” Sho inquired carefully, biting his lower lip to prevent him from smiling as he points at her thighs.
“No.” She replied impatiently, throwing an elbow at the car door’s panel.
He finally let his laughter out. She looks like she’s about throw up with the look on her face.
“We’re just submitting our marriage certificate to the registry, Yumi.” Sho puts in. “I cannot imagine how worse that look on your face will be when we hold the ceremony.”
Sayumi turns again on that cramped passenger’s side, facing Sho. “Aren’t you nervous at all?” She asked him, slightly alarmed. “In a few minutes, we’re going to be husband and wife.”
Sho smiled quietly, making sure that he’s focused on the road. “What’s there to be nervous about? Shouldn’t you be happy?” He asked, never leaving his sight in front.
“Of course I am happy, very much happy.” She assured. She’s starting to get a bit tensed judging by the tone of her voice. “It’s just that I still don’t get the marriage process here in Japan. You just have to sign the papers and submit it to the registry and voila, you’re married.” She twitches her eyebrows as she spoke.
They stop at a red light and Sho turns to her side, taking her hand. “Are you having second thoughts about this?”
Sayumi quickly shakes her head incessantly. “No, no, no, no.” She repeated endlessly, cupping Sho by the cheek. “It’s just nerves. I’ll get over it.”
Sho smiled at her, leaning over for a quick kiss before he accelerates the car as the light turns to green. “I’m looking forward to how your nerves will affect you on our wedding ceremony.” He commented with a big smirk as Sayumi slaps him playfully on the chest.
~~~

Sho and Sayumi sit side by side on the waiting area outside the marriage registry office. Hands tangled together as Sho tried to stop hers from trembling. They never spoke a single word since they handed their signed marriage papers, instead, Sho tenderly gazes at her wordlessly since they sat on those chairs.

She’s not wearing much make-up on her face, only a glossy red lipstick and a faint shade of cheek blush. Her long hair is down unkempt as a few strands of her outgrown bangs are covering eyes. It’s the middle of winter and she opted to wear a fluffy trench coat and a knee high leather boots, inside though, she’s wearing a nice flowy pink dress. He caught a glimpse of it while waiting for her to finish getting ready back at his apartment.

A thought crosses his mind as he stares at her without a blink. Seconds later, he was grinning like an idiot with his silent thoughts.

“You’re starting to get really creepy, Sakurai.” Sayumi breaks the silence as she quickly looks at him before returning her gaze on the floor.

“What?” Sho replied defensively, not leaving his sight on her beautiful face. “It’s not creepy, you’re my wife.” He giggled, taking her free hand on his.

“Not yet official.” She retorts back with a smile.

“Sakurai-san.” A middle-aged lady called out from the registry office door and they both looked at her direction. “Sakurai Sho-san?”

“Now it is.” Sho whispered before they both stood up from their seats to approach her. Sayumi can’t help but feel butterflies on her stomach as a big cheeky smile appears on her lips.

“Congratulations.” The lady smiled at them as she hands them their papers.

“Thank you.” They both enthusiastically said at the same time with big smiles on their faces.

The lady went back inside the office and Sho eagerly look at the papers. The top of the paper reads, Certificate of Acceptance of Notification of Marriage, a proof that now, they are officially a married couple.

A prestigious title is no longer attached to Sayumi’s name and it felt surreal to actually see it for the first time.

“How does it feel?” Sho nudged her on the shoulder. She’s completely taken by the characters written on their marriage paper. “Seeing the character ‘Sakurai’ before your name?” He smiled cheekily.

Sayumi shakes her head in disbelief. “It’s amazing.” She cried happily, jumping to Sho for a big hug.

----------

A few hours after officially being Mr. and Mrs. Sakurai, the couple drives off the CM filming location for Arashi’s latest endorsement. The date for the filming is decided way before they finalized the wedding date so Sho have no choice but to work on this date.

Sayumi insisted that she wanted to get married on January 17 even though Sho’s schedule is free two days after. It was only later when realized the significance of that date. It was the date when they met at Café de Flore, the bizarre breakfast they shared that changed their lives forever. This day marks their first anniversary.

Sho and Sayumi walks hand in hand as they went to Arashi’s dressing room. She also has a class on this day since it’s the middle of the week but she wanted share her happiness with the members even for short period of time.

When they entered the dressing room, colorful confetti bursts before them as they were greeted with a loud “Omedetou!” by the members and some of Arashi’s staff. Jun is popping a bottle of champagne while Nino gave her a big bouquet of flowers, whispering congratulations while doing so.

“We know that you planned a dinner party later but we wanted to be the first ones to congratulate the newlyweds.” Aiba excitedly announces, jumping to Sho and Sayumi for a hug.

“We just can’t wait until tonight to celebrate.” Jun came over, handed the couple a glass of champagne while merrily tapping Sho on the shoulders.

“Leader would love to lead the toast.” Nino suggested as everyone have a glass of champagne on their hands.

Ohno raised his glass and began his speech. “To Sho-kun and Yumi-chan, may you have a fruitful and blissful life together. Stay happy, stay in love. We’re looking forward to your little princes and princesses in the future.” The small dressing room burst into laughter as Sho and Sayumi blushed shyly.

“Omedetou!!” Ohno concluded his speech as everyone cheerfully echoed their congratulations before they sips on their champagne.

----------

Thirty minutes after the surprise celebration, the director for the CM already called for the start of the filming. Sho quickly excuses himself for a few minutes to accompany Sayumi back to the car.

“Go back now.” Sayumi told him when they reached his car on the parking lot. “Just because you’re today’s groom doesn’t mean you need to have a special treatment.” She added wittily.

Sho smiled happily. “Not after I give this.” He produces a small box from his pocket and revealed a pair of white gold wedding rings. Sayumi placed her hand on her mouth in shock.

“Married couple needs to have wedding rings, right?” Sho puts in, taking her left hand up and putting the ring on her finger. “Your turn.” He handed the box to her.

She laughs timidly. “We’re really doing this in the middle of the parking lot?” They laughed at the realization.

Sayumi picks up the ring on the box, takes Sho’s hand on hers as she inserts the wedding band on his ring finger.

She places her hand on top of his as their wedding ring shines below the clear winter sky.

Sho pulled her closer, staring admiringly at her face yet again. “Do you know what I’m thinking about when you told me that I look like creeper earlier?” He asked with a smirk.

Sayumi giggled. “What?” She wrapped her arms around his waist, dropping her forehead on his.

“I realized that starting today you’re not Her Imperial Highness Princess Sayumi anymore.” He mumbled gently.  “Starting today, you’ll be my Princess, only mine.” He smiled seeing the happy grin on her face. Slowly, he leaned forward, their lips meeting each other as they share yet another kiss.

-END-

A/N: Regarding the Japanese way of marriage, I was actually ingtrigued at how easy it is to get married in Japan. I remember when Oguri Shun and Yamada Yuu got married, she said that she fills up the paper by herself and submitted it to the registry even if Shun's not with her and then boom, they are married.
So I researched about it and yes, it's 3 easy steps. Fill up, submit and wait for the certification. And that's what I did here. Because I feel that if they marry that way, it'll be more realistic.
I was thinking of writing an epilogue but then I am also going to write another fic with Arashi and their girls later on so, I'll just write my epilogue idea on that fic. :)
Thanks again minna!! :D
