CHAPTER ONE
Matsumoto Jun fixed his trucker hat and put on the hood of his sweater as some shoppers are slowly eyeing him, his presence is slowly creating a scene.
“Oh, Matsujun!” A little girl yells, pointing a finger on him as he pass by her and her mother, he gave them a half-smile and a small bow. He quickly walks away before the people around starts noticing him.
Going grocery shopping at this time and day is not a good idea. Never again! He’s screaming in his head. It’s a Saturday afternoon and this supermarket is full of mothers, grocery shopping with their kids.
Jun woke up today just right after twelve noon as he ended his drinking spree with his friends last night at almost five in the morning, this day is his day off anyways so it’s fine get to wasted. However, when he searched for something to eat, he noticed that his fridge is just housing few bottles of water and a half-empty juice carton and his food cup board is empty. Throwing a party at your house for two consecutive weekends is a bad idea.
He scanned his cart to see if he’s got everything he needed so that he can get out of this supermarket already. Yosh! Let’s go! He said, seeing that his necessities are complete. As he pushed his cart towards the cashier area, his eyes found a girl from afar with a basket in hand, deciding on which fish to buy. He laughs, seeing that confused expression on her face. Should I come over? His mind is fighting to come to her or not. It’s my fault for not getting her number the other night so I should be brave enough now. Another thought escapes his mind. Looks like she’s alone so no worries. He gathered his courage and started pushing his cart towards her direction.
*Flashback* Two weeks ago
“Eh? Is this Sho-chan’s girl’s sister?” Nino wondered as he surveyed the newspaper on his hand. The Arashi dressing room is still silent as he and Jun are the only ones who arrived yet.
“What does it say?” Jun said nonchalantly. He’s busy writing a message on his mobile phone, Oguri Shun is inviting him for a dinner tonight and he’s answering him back.
“A guy called Murata Ren is marrying this girl called Nakagawa Rina on blah, blah, blah.” Nino is too lazy to continue. “According to this article, this girl Rina, is the daughter of the Minister of Internal Affairs, isn’t that the father of Sho-chan’s girl?”
“Sho-kun’s girl has a name. It’s Aki.” Jun informed him. “And yes, I think that’s her sister that Sho-kun’s been talking about.”
“These rich people are really show-off, ne? They even announce their marriage on newspapers as if they’re big celebrities.” Nino snorted. Jun just let out a small laugh as he took the newspaper on Nino’s hand.
As soon as Jun laid his eyes on the newspaper, this girl, that’s probably Nakagawa Rina, caught his attention. She’s locking arms with a man in suit, who’s probably the fiancée, looking very elegant in that white knee-length dress.
“Ohayou!!” Greeted by Aiba, followed by Ohno. Nino greeted them as they entered.
“Ohayou.” Jun mumbled, his eyes can’t take off the newspaper. He can’t pinpoint what but this girl has something that attracted him.
After his eyes finally move away from the newspaper for like fifteen minutes, he looked around the dressing room to see Nino completely indulged in his DS, Ohno is sleeping on the couch and Aiba’s eyes is on him.
“What?” Jun asks coolly. Please don’t tell me you caught me staring at this picture. He’s wishing in his mind.
“Nothing.” Aiba replied but he’s smiling like he caught someone red-handed. “Actually, Matsujun-”
“Ohayou!” A cheerful greeting by Sakurai Sho cuts their conversation. A big smile is plastered on his face as he entered.
“What’s with the stupid grin?” Jun asked. Thanks, Sho-kun, you saved me, a thought he couldn’t say out loud.
*End of Flashback*
“Look at the eyes and see if it’s bright and clear.” Jun suggested as soon as he arrived beside her, the girl turned to him and the lost expression on her face suddenly turned into a shy smile.
“Rina-san.” Jun gave her a small bow.
“Matsumoto-san.” Rina bowed back. “Wow. I didn’t expect you to meet you in a supermarket.” she said, flashing a smile.
Why do you have to give me that smile? It’s my weak point, now I can’t help myself, Jun thought. Since meeting her two days ago after being introduced by Sho and his girlfriend, Rina’s sister, it seems like he can’t get over that smile.
“I didn’t expect you either.” Jun answered, smiling to her.
She laughs. “I know. It’s my first time.” She admitted. “Isn’t it obvious? I can’t even pick a fresh fish.” She looks really embarrassed.
“There’s always a first time for everything, right?” Jun said, hoping that he can ease her embarrassment.
“Like today, first time picking a fish at twenty-four years old.” Rina laughed.
“Tell me, why does this super socialite, Nakagawa Rina, went grocery shopping on her own?” Jun teased her. This is only their second meeting but they are talking so friendly with each other, not that he’s complaining though.
“No such thing as super socialite.” Rina shakes her head. “Since I backed out from the wedding I moved out my parents’ house and lived in my apartment. I had it for years but my mom insisted that I should stay with them. Now I found a reason to go back there.” Rina explained, she talks about her cancelled wedding like it’s not a big thing. “So now I’m living on my own without helpers to go grocery shopping for me and chefs who prepare my breakfast as soon I wake up.”
“Such luxury really exists, huh?” Jun can’t help but comment.
“It does.” Rina answered. “Some likes it, some don’t. Like my sister. She left because she’s sick of it.”
“And you? Do you like it?” Jun curiously asks. Aki, Rina’s sister, is far from being the spoiled rich kid. Jun admires her for being so practical given her family’s social status.
“Honestly?” Rina glances at him before continuing. “I won’t say I hate it. I grew up that way and I’m accustomed with that way of living but I realize that at some point I should start living on my own and try the normal life. In which I’m starting now.” She smiled proudly.
Strong-willed, like her sister, I like that. Jun thought.
“My sister made me realize a lot of things since she came back. I found myself wishing that I can do it like her too. After all, she’s my idol.” Rina shyly laughs.
“Oh, I think I have a rival in Aki, then.” Jun smirks. He would never forget that night when she says that she’s a big fan of him.
*Flashback* Two days ago
“Thank you for the dinner, Aki.” Nino said as they all reach the parking lot.
“No problem, Nino. It was a fun night. Let’s do it again some other time.” Aki smiled.
“Aki, you have to learn that Nino never pays for meals so don’t invite him so frequent, okay?” Sho whispered to Aki but he intentionally made everyone hear it.
“Hey, Sho-chan! That’s mean!” Nino retaliates. “Don’t listen to your boyfriend, Aki! I pay for meals!”
“He only pays if he’s with kouhais, that’s why he always makes sure that Aiba-san is with him to make him pay.” Rina, the Arashi fangirl, joins in teasing Nino.
“Rina-san!” Nino can’t believe Rina is taking Sho’s side.
“Never doubt the knowledge of a fangirl.” Sho commented.
Jun, who’s watching their bantering, is just laughing from the side, gathering courage to ask for something from Rina.
In which he never did in the end. “I can’t believe you didn’t ask for her number.” Nino shows his discontentment in Jun. The both of them are in a taxi on the way home. “That’s suck, Jun-kun. Why are you tongue-tied all of a sudden?”
“I’m overwhelmed, I think.” Jun softly said. The only thing he said was Oyasumi.
“Overwhelmed by what? Rina-san is very friendly. If I were you I would have ask from the start even if Sho-chan and Aki are there. And didn’t she say that she’s a fan of yours? That’s already a hint! She’s getting you to make a move on her. Those stares that you’re giving each other, another hint! I can’t believe you’re being a chicken over this when you already have an advantage.” Nino continues his scolding.
“Stop rubbing it in, Nino.” Jun said nonchalantly, he’s disheartened enough by what he did, he doesn’t need Nino to reiterate that.
“But I’m right, ne? You like her.” Nino smirks.
“I like her, okay. Since the first time I saw that newspaper. Happy?” Jun admitted. There are no keeping secrets anymore, he has totally revealed it to Nino.
*End of Flashback*
Jun accompanied Rina until she finished her grocery shopping. Unexpectedly, Jun didn’t felt nervous like that first time they met, rather, it was a light and calm atmosphere.
“I’m just wondering, are you free after this?” Jun asks as they walk in the parking lot with their shopping bags in hand. He was surprised himself for asking that question.
“I’m still on leave from work so I’m free until the end of the month.” Rina laughs. Jun might not see it but she’s getting all happy inside with this meeting.
“You wanna join me for a meal? I haven’t had my lunch yet.” Jun asks again, he’s getting better at this.
“It’s three in the afternoon and you haven’t had your lunch yet?” Rina stops in front of a silver Audi A6, she pressed on her key and the car alarms in response.
“My house is ransacked over the weekend and I don’t have any food there. That explains this sudden trip to the grocery.” Jun laughs. “Nice car you got there, as expected from you.” He added.
“Do I really come across to you as a spoiled-brat rich kid?” Rina tried to sound unaffected but a negative impression by Matsumoto Jun is the least she wanted.
“No.” Jun replies immediately. “I’m sorry, it’s just that it’s my first to meet such classy woman like you.”
“You’ve met my sister before me, right?” Rina smiled.
“Aki is different, she’s bit low-profiled.” Jun says, realizing after that it’s not the right words to say.
“And I’m not?” Rina raised her eyebrows.
“No! Don’t get it wrong.” Jun shakes his head in embarrassment. “Aki doesn’t drive expensive cars and…” Jun stops. “Let’s not compare you and Aki, okay?”
“I don’t want to be compared to her in the first place.” Rina snorted, opening the driver’s side door.
Jun slaps his mouth for being impulsive, everything’s going well until he made that comment.
“The late lunch is still up, Matsumoto-san?” Rina rolls down her car window.
“If you want to.” Jun immediately responded.
“Okay, I’ll go. I’ll prove to you that I’m more than that woman you think I am.” Rina smirks through the window as she starts her car engine. “My number.” She slid a piece of paper, Jun walks closer to get it. “Mail me on where to meet you, I’ll just drop these things in my apartment.” Jun nodded and she left.
The paper was actually a business card with NTT Telecom written on top. Under Rina’s name, a Marketing Director was written and a few spaces below is her number. Jun smiles to himself as he gazes at car filled parking lot, it may not went smoothly but at least he manages to get to have a meal with her and he got her number too. Now, all he needs to worry about is on how he will make up for giving unnecessary comments a while ago.
