I initially planned to make this a mini-series (like less than 10 chapters) but now I dunno. LOL. I think it's pacing is kinda slow~ But I'll try to pick it up in the next chapters. :)
A Beautiful Mess will be updated tomorrow coz I don't want to post it the same day as this one. Makes you guys look forward for a new one tomorrow, right? *winks* Happy Reading! :)
CHAPTER TWO
Matsumoto Jun went straight to his destination after he sent Rina the details of their late lunch, an Italian cafe in Ebisu that he frequently goes with his friends. It was past three in the afternoon when he got there and the small space occupying the cafe was packed with young people.
Ahhh. Wrong move again, Jun. He told himself, he forgot that it’s a weekend and everyone is out to hang-out with their friends. He’s already making his way out to look for another place but the café manager noticed him.
“Matsumoto-san, Hisashiburi. You came alone?” The manager friendly asks.
“I’m with someone, she’s on her way but it seems like we doesn’t have any place to seat, Hiro-san.” Jun pats Hiro-san’s back.
“We can find a way for that, Matsumoto-san. Leave it to me.” Hiro-san guarantees him. “Once she arrived you’ll have your seat.”
“Arigatou, Hiro-san!” Jun beams with joy. Hiro-san gave him a salute as went over to a waiter to reserve a seat for their loyal customer.
Jun waits for Rina outside the small café still with his disguise of trucker hat covered with hoodie and he put on his sunglasses, wishing that nobody can recognize him now.
Meanwhile, Rina just dropped her grocery bags to her apartment and puts on a little make-up to freshen up her look. She doesn’t want to go an extra effort on this late lunch she’s having with Matsumoto Jun, it wasn’t a date anyways. She just wants look presentable, that’s it. She went out of her apartment building and waits for a taxi, she’s proving to him that she’s not the socialite, spoiled-brat kid he thinks she is and her luxury car doesn’t do that justice.
She finally hailed a taxi after five minutes and looks over at her mobile phone to check his mail again.
From: Unregistered number
A café called Partenope in Ebisu.
I’ll be waiting. I won’t eat till you come.
It will be your fault if I suddenly
collapse later. :(
Matsumoto Jun. :)
She’s giggling like an idiot inside the taxi, she has read that mail a thousand times since it was sent to her but it still gives a the same effect every time. She has dreamt of this mail exchange with Matsumoto Jun for twelve whole years, she never thought this day would come. Unexpectedly, the cool Matsumoto Jun writes mails like a dork.
She saves him number on her contacts and types in her reply. She didn’t reply right away because she doesn’t want him to feel that she’s excited to meet him.
To: Matsumoto Jun
I’m on my way.
Be there in 15 minutes.
Rina. ^_^
She anxiously waits for the taxi to arrive at her destination, getting irritated on every red light that got in their way. Finally, they reached the place, she can see him from afar with his disguise. She laughs at how he’s still recognizable with his face all covered up. The taxi stops and Jun glance at the person inside, he saw her paying the driver and he looks relieved.
“Where’s your car?” Jun asks, crossing his eyebrows.
“My car screams spoiled brat rich kid, Matsumoto-san.” Rina smirks.
“You don’t have to prove me anything, that’s my impulsive mouth talking.” Jun sighed. He’s still feeling a bit guilty for rubbing it on her.
“Let me prove it to your impulsive mouth then.” Rina said, walking to small café entrance, Jun smiled as he followed behind her.
Once they entered the small café, Jun waved to Hiro-san and he points to a secluded area by the corner. “Thanks again, Hiro-san. You even reserved my usual seat.” Jun pats his shoulders.
“Of course, Matsumoto-san. It’s looks like a date, ne? You really need that secluded spot to hide from the stalkers.” Hiro-san whispered as he teases Jun.
“Not a date, Hiro-san but I hope by next time I can get my first shot at a date with her.” Jun whispered back, grinning with the friendly Hiro-san.
Jun took his seat as Hiro-san gave them the menu card. “Just call me if you’re ready to order, Matsumoto-san.” Hiro-san smiles at Rina then at Jun before going back to the counter.
“Do you go here often? Rina asks, scanning the menu. “Looks like everyone’s friendly with you.”
“Uhm. With some of my friends.” Jun replies, putting down his menu.
“Just get me what you usually order.” Rina peeks through the card.
Jun laughs at that gesture of her, if she continues to be cute like this every time he really wouldn’t able to help himself anymore.
“My favourite is the Meatball Marinara Pasta with extra cheese on top. It’s the best.” Jun suggests, trying to stay composed.
“Sounds great.” Rina smiles at him.
That smile again, Rina-san. Stop it already it’s killing me. Jun thought as he grabs the menu card to cover his face, pretending to scan for his favourite menu. “The Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza is good too, you want to try that?” He said behind the menu.
“Let’s try it then.” Rina answered.
Jun turned around to look for Hiro-san, he immediately came forward to get their orders.
“Is it your day-off today?” Rina asks once Hiro-san is done with their orders.
“Yeah, that’s why I’m lazing around.” Jun replies with a laugh. “You told me earlier that you’re on leave?”
“Remember how I’m supposed to get married?” Rina asks coolly and Jun nodded. “I took a month off from work to organize it. I won’t be back until the first week of July.”
“Oh.” Jun is nodding his head. “Funny how you act so cool about that. I mean, you talk about it like it’s not a big deal.”
“It is a big deal but I should be happy right? That I came to senses and now I can have my own shot of real romance and happiness.”
“That guy you’re supposed to marry? You didn’t love him?” Jun has been curious about that since he learned that she cancelled their wedding. Seeing their picture in the newspaper, she looks really happy with him.
“I like him. He’s educated, smart and he’s very nice. ”Rina smiles. Jun felt a little jealousy over that. “But you know that certain feeling that you should like him because you’re forced to? It’s like being scripted.”
“Uhmm.” Jun nods understandingly. “Like being in a drama set, you should get into the role and act according to the script.”
“Yeah, great analogy.” Rina agrees. “And my father is the director who gives all the orders.”
“You and Aki talking about your father make me feared to meet him.” Jun laughs timidly.
Rina laughs. “My father gives off an authoritarian aura but he’s not all that bad.”
A waiter comes over to bring their orders and it cuts their conversation for a while.
“Looks delicious.” Rina smiles while looking at her food. “Itadakimasu.”
“Itadakimasu.” Jun replies and they indulged in their food.
“This is great! Oishii!” Rina said while munching on her food.
Jun smiles at how she can be so cute and squishy sometimes, he never imagined her to be like that at all.
“I think I will go here frequently, it’s just near my house.” Rina enthusiastically says.
“I’m glad you liked it.” Jun smiles, having fun with the unexpected sight of her.
“I have an impression of you eating Italian food all the time.” Rina laughs chirpily.
“Bambino?” Jun guesses.
“Yeah and how you always make pasta on TV.” Rina added.
Jun laughs. Just how of an avid fan is she. “I was stuck making Italian food on set for three months and I took a liking on it.”
“It suits you anyways.” Rina compliments him making him blush a little.
“Thanks.” Jun shyly smiles. “It makes me wonder. You’re really a big fan, are you?”
“I am.” Rina admits, still maintaining that composed nature. “But like I said, as I grow up, my admiration for you guys goes to a different level. I’m done with the endless screaming, heart racing, emotions flowing type of fan. If I still was, I’m probably tongue-tied now, jaw-dropping in amusement and creeping you up with my scary gaze.” She laughs again with that chirpy laugh of hers, which Jun finds cute.
“Have anyone told you that you’re unexpectedly funny and quirky?” Jun smiles. “Now I’m eating my words when I compared you to your sister.”
Rina felt her cheeks burning with glee, covering it with her hands before he can even notice. “What did I told you earlier? I’m going to prove to you that I’m more than what you think I am, right?”
“Uhmm.” Jun nods. “I’m really sorry about that. I feel so guilty while I was waiting for you earlier, I thought that you took it really hard.”
Rina let out a faint smile. “I learned to not take those kind of things to my heart. I’m always compared to her when we were younger. Because she’s the smart and sociable one and I am the shut-in and awkward one. Plus the fact that she’s my father’s favourite really affects me emotionally.”
Jun didn’t know what to say, he doesn’t want his impulsive mouth to talk again. He figured that it’s better to just listen.
“Anyways, I tried to change myself when she left and I succeeded.” Rina smiles. “But don’t get me wrong, I love my sister and I never blame her for my difficult childhood. I took it as a challenge to change myself for the better and now this is me.” She proudly stated.
“Are you okay with sharing this to me?” Jun asks, “I mean, it’s pretty personal… I think.”
“It’s fine. It’s part of my ‘proving-to-you-that-I’m-not-a-spoiled-brat-rich-kid’ and I’m more than that.” Rina laughs and she felt him staring at her with a smile on his face.
“You’re not. Okay? You already proved it to me. I found a new side of you now, the funny and quirky side.” Jun said and he met her eyes. They instantly stare away from each other and an awkward silence surrounds their table.
They ended their late lunch and Jun offered to bring her home since she didn’t brought her car.
“Stop. That’s me.” Rina points to an apartment building and Jun stopped his car.
“You live here?” Jun asked.
“Yes, why?” Rina answers while undoing her seatbelt.
“What a coincidence because I live there.” Jun points at the opposite apartment building and they both laugh.
“Are you serious?” Rina asked, still amuse. “We’re actually neighbors?”
“Yeah. I’ve been living there for six years now.” Jun obviously can’t hide his excitement too. “Neighbors, huh? Maybe we can go have meals with each other sometimes, we can just go cross the street and we are at each other’s homes already.” He suggest, realizing that his impulsive mouth is talking again.
“You wouldn’t mind?” Rina asks, crossing her eyebrows.
“Why would I mind? It’s fine. Besides I don’t have any friends in the neighborhood, you’re my first, if ever.”
“That’s a great idea. I don’t have any friends here also.” Rina says. “Ja. I’m going now.” She says while opening the door and stepping out of his car. “Thank you for the ride, neighbor!” she enthusiastically says as she waves him goodbye before entering the building.
Jun stays there until she was out of sight, smiling to himself at how everything seems so coincidental when it comes to Rina. First, seeing her in that newspaper, then tagging on a dinner date with Sho and Aki where he first met her, then earlier, spotting her in the grocery and finally now, seeing that they are actually neighbors. He doesn’t know what kind of surprise will hit them next but he’s excitedly looking forward to it.
