CHARACTER
Name: First, Last (Western order) Sebastian Michaelis
Canon: Kuroshituji
Timeline: manga, up to date to about chapter 61 or so, which is in the middle of the cruise liner arc. If anything CRAZY happens before the end, I will do a canon review (provided that it would affect either his attitudes to the world at large, or his attitudes or knowledge about another character.) So far in the story, he was attacked by a deathscythe, which is one of the few things canonically proven to injure him. If something major happened after that that affects past characterization, I will do a character review. This expressly means that he will have yet to have experience the end of the anime, and he has never met Ash/Angela from the first season (Even though I’m assuming that Earl Grey is going turn out to fill the same character role in the end anyway.). He has also never met Claude, Alois Trancy, or Hannah Anafeloz from season two, either.
Personality: Sebastian Michaelis is a demon, and is ultimately corrupt and self-serving. Everything that he does is for the ultimate pursuit of his own dark desires. His current goal is to possess and devour the soul of Ciel, the Earl of Phantomhive and the Guard Dog of the Queen of England. As a demon, he is said to be immortal, at least in as far as that he will not die from natural causes. Because demons get bored with eternity, they seek out new experiences to keep the world fresh and new. Sebastian is something of a gourmand, his sustenance coming from the souls of humans. Ciel has a very unique soul, one touched by tragedy and darkness, and yet unwavering and untainted from it all. It is for the future promise of Ciel’s soul that causes Sebastian to serve him. In regards to his young master, he is quite protective of him, but hides any of his predatory instincts for Ciel’s soul well. Even in their private moments together, Sebastian makes no mention to the end goal of the contract. He seems to expect that he will be with Ciel for many years beyond the four he had already spent with him. He takes great pains to make certain that the boy gets proper education and socialization, taking almost sadistic glee in Ciel’s aversion to doing anything that does not relate to his business, his work for the Queen, or finding the murderers of his parents. He seems to have genuine affection for the boy, as well as the other members of the house (on some level or another), but he would certainly not let any tenderness get in the way of his ultimate goals.
Demons are all presented as being very capable creatures in the series, and Sebastian is no exception. Compared to a human being, he is all-powerful, able to not only move faster than a human, but think faster than one as well. For his own interests, he took it upon himself to hire three servants to delegate household tasks to, even though he didn’t need them. In fact, the three servants he hired (this is not including the semi-competent servant he hired later on) were all nearly useless at their hired tasks, forcing Sebastian to constantly fix their mistakes as well as focus on his own work. Despite his constant irritation with the incompetence of his charges, he seems to enjoy fixing the errors on some level, likely because he views them, unconsciously or not, as opportunities to show off to Ciel. He is a perfectionist to the extreme, and snatching perfection out of the jaws of disorder simply makes the success all the sweeter. He is driven in all things, and, as fitting of a butler of the Phantomhive Estate, he will do anything to serve his master’s end, and he will do it flawlessly, every time.
All of the characters in the Kuroshitsuji Univers have some manner of character quirk, something that adds a degree of comedic depth to an otherwise austere and bleak series. Sebastian’s special quirk is an obsession for cats. He finds that cats are uniquely special among all of the animals of the earth, because of their sweet little faces, their long tails, and their soft little paws. If fulfilling Ciel’s wishes is his first priority, cuddling with cats is his second. Regrettably for him, Ciel is allergic to cats, so his love affair with felines is something that he must keep hidden from his Young Master. It originally started by feeding the cats that roamed outside of the Phantomhive estate saucers of cream, but eventually, a pack of cats ended up finding their way inside of his wardrobe, so that he could protect them from the harsh, inclement British weather. At one point, when a houseguest was attempting to frame Ciel for the murder of ___, Sebastian faked his murder and created a fake disguise in order to move an investigation along to exonerate the Young Master. As a result, he had to be in two places at nearly the same time. Despite the importance of not being discovered before Ciel was cleared, he risked the entire false investigation and perhaps even exposing his supernatural nature to the rest of Ciel’s houseguests, just to ensure that all of the cats that had been in his wardrobe that had escaped when the murder investigation had moved to his room, were all returned to safety. This is how important cats are to Sebastian.
First Person:
[Sebastian is looking at the camera, his brows knit in mild curiosity as he looked at the screen, reflecting his own face.]
What an interesting little device. It seems rather strange that they would be simply handed out to every citizen in this fine city. Who is it that wishes us to broadcast our thoughts and private moments, I wonder? We cannot all have interesting things to share, could we?
[He flips the device over with the camera facing the ground now, looking at his trouser legs and shoes. There is a scratching sound, then noise interference, as if he’s trying to break it open. His voice comes from off-screen.]
Curious….
[He snaps it shut with a sharp little click.]
Third Person: He was not fond of confusion, and in general, rarely suffered from its effects. This time, however, he would have to suffer under imposed befuddlement, at least for the next few moments. He sat up from the floor of the train car, clean and appointed in lovely red upholstery, clutching his chest where the Undertaker has stabbed him. His clothing was stained and ripped, but his skin underneath was smooth and unbroken. What a strange development. Demons didn’t get the afterlife, after all. When one was cut apart, well… where was there left to go? Demons were the afterlife.
He didn’t have long to ponder this before the train rumbled into the station, screeching to a halt. He supposed he could have just stayed on the train forever, but… he had to face whatever had happened to him at some point. On shaky legs, he got off the ground, walking off the tremors and stepping out onto the platform. As he disembarked, he felt an odd weight in his coat pocket, the one that wasn’t obliterated by the Deathscythe. It looked just like an ordinary pocket watch but it was not his pocket watch. Curious. He wiped a gloved thumb over the shiny surface before flicking it open, looking it over, scrutinizing.
What a strange little thing this is. Far beyond my ken. At least for now.
He flicked it shut, and looked back up from the device, keen ears straining, sensing. Was the Young Master calling him? Was he safe? Chances are he wasn’t. He was quite good at getting caught up in trouble.
But how to get out? He could sense the magic in the air, keeping him trapped inside these walls. He looked out at the people bustling about. Perhaps it was time to start asking questions…
