Twinkle is great, if you're a twitter.com person.
and i'd recommend using safari and visiting facebook.com instead of using the application. it' buggy. and the .com site has a specialized iphone-interface that's -gorgeous-.
also, last.fm has an app, if you use that site as well.

my handle there is the same as my LJ.
Also the "remote" app is cool if you want to turn your iphone into a remote control for your itunes or apple tv, loopt is a really neat gps/location based social networking app (your friends need to sign up too though, but its catching on fast), boxoffice is OK for movie times/reviews.

I also got RotaryDialer, because it was something I thought I always wanted, but in reality is just a pain. I guess rotary phones are better in memory than in practice, lol.
For useful things, WeatherBug is awesome. Only, we have no storms out here so I haven't even had a chance to see anything on the radar map. Yelp is pretty helpful since it ties into your current location. And the stuff people have already mentioned is good too...
