It was one of the hardest days of Mike's life.
Heading into his meeting with Cooper in Las Vegas, Mike had one rule: stay away from Piper Neilsen, his would-be wife. It wasn't so easy, as she was waiting for him in the lobby with his room keys and offered to escort him to his suite. He managed to get away from her since he knew his way around the Montecito, but he hadn't planned on walking into the casino to find a wet t-shirt contest in progress.
There was only one thing that could cool off Mike after seeing something like that. He headed straight to Cooper's office. "Of course I came straight to see you, boss," said Mike, faking a grin as he took a seat. "You'll be happy to know that everything is still on track at the Macau site, though they still haven't had the ground-breaking yet on the new property. In the meantime, everything is running smoothly at the Hawaiian villas."
It was tough to read Cooper's expression, but the fact that he poured a glass of whiskey for Mike might have been a sign of trouble. "Mike, you've done a fabulous job. I appreciate your hard work, because I know that overseeing a new property in a foreign country while filling in elsewhere requires a lot of multi-tasking. That's why I wanted to tell you personally about some difficult news."
Oh boy, thought Mike. "What sort of news?" he asked.
"I'm issuing a press release on Monday announcing that the Montecito Resort Group has indefinitely postponed construction on the new casino in Macau and we're closing the Montecito Atlantic City," said Cooper in his cool and composed manner. "We're taking big losses at all the properties, Mike. I just can't start new construction at this time."
Cooper went on to say a lot more, none of which Mike really heard because he was still reeling. Once again, he was losing his job. In a daze, he stood up and cut Cooper off in mid-sentence. "I've gotta go, Coop. Aunt Gladys knows I'm in town, and they'll be hell to pay if I don't stop in and see her."
"We'll talk later, Mike," said Cooper. "Go ahead and try to enjoy yourself, and give my respects to your aunt."
Mike stumbled his way out of the office. And even though he knew he should stay away from her, he was absolutely grateful to find Piper waiting for him. "Let's go back to your place, babe. I can't stay here," he said.
It may have been the hardest day, but it was memorable. After that night, there was no way that Mike and Piper would be getting their marriage annulled.
[NFI, as Mike will probably be too busy to respond, but OOC comments are love.]
