Damn, you go Glenn Coco. And I'm with you on all of this. I have older gay friends who remember when Pride was actually about something other than leather boys and drag contests.
Even here in Seattle it's just like "Oh okay, you're gay....and?" Which is really sad, considering how passionate people are about other (and definitely more trite) issues - come on, the whales can fuck off for a second here, ya know?
Just seems like today's GLBT culture look around, say "oh that's nice" and take for granted what their previous generations worked so hard to accomplish.
"But honestly, how much of gay civil rights history do you learn in today's Pride celebrations? None."
THIS SO FUCKING MUCH i am only 18 but i can tell you i have never been educated on homosexuality nor have i ever had a gay role model. I had no one to look up to growing up that could tell me it's okay to be gay. This needs to be fixed. Most people still think being gay is a choice. Gay pride events should be about educating people not about embracing stereotypes!
Yeah, it really would have been nice to have a gay role model - famous or not - but you gotta make the best of what you can. :) I hope you do find a friend who can help you navigate the waters, though, especially when you turn 21.
25, about to turn 26 in a month. And I just meant in general. I picked 21 since that's the legal drinking age, and gay culture is notorious for its alcohol and partying. :]

The icon is from Cazwell's "Ice Cream Truck" - there's a party about it going on in this post right now: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/49737107.html

how old are you if you don't mind me asking? So you're saying that at 21 it gets more difficult?
