Fire Spinning Stuff

Jul 11, 2008 21:48

I have procured stuff for fire-spinning. I'm rather excited, though I know there is more that I need. Here are the supplies I picked up today:
  • Smallish Rubbermaid tote to carry everything in
  • 2 empty paint cans, one for soaking and one for spinning out
  • A vegetable steamer basket-thingy for the spinning out can
  • A funnel for dumping fuel back into the ( Read more... )

Fron what I remember carrying you stuff in plastic isn't good for the poi. You might want to use a metal took box like Charlie (the unicorn).

I don't spin when I'm not at fest, I want to. I have to assemble a kit too.

The fuel itself will eat plastic, and the hot hardware can melt it. I just let my wicks air/cool for a bit before transporting them back up the hill in my plastic case, and haven't have any problems. So long as the remaining fuel evaporates, you shouldn't have any problems.

Home depot won't have Coleman fuel. I usually get mine at Walmart, in the camping section. I think your kit sounds good. Get a pair of pliers for quick-links, and maybe a little tupperware container for spare hardware.

I just put my wicks inside of the spin-off bucket once it's dry and put all that in my case. General maintenance, let your buckets dry out/evaporate before you store them/anything in them. Also let your wicks air out every once in a while, but so long as they don't get wet wicks are pretty durable.

Make sure your case stays dry, Whitney had a problem last year where his poi box collected some water and soaked his wicks, giving him uneven/short/unreliable burns.

white gas (might be labeled camp fuel) some spinners also use a mix of lamp oil and white gas so they can get a longer burn, since the lamp oil does not evaporate as quickly as the white gas, but if you get a smokier burn that way too.

Dick's around us carries us the gas, as does WalMart and a lot of small hardware stores.

We transport our poi in a all-metal toolbox - it has a lift-out tray on top, so we can place our small flashlight, pliers, and extra handles in it, too.

I have friends who use the staffs, and they tend to carry them in either small tote bags (once they cool) - or if they don't break down, baton bags or the bags desinged for martial art eqip, since they tend to be the right length.

If you want to spin/practice in cold weather, we found all leather golf gloves work quite well, since they have very very little non0natural material (2% or so); and are thin enough not to interfere with your grip, but the winter ones provide warmth.
