I just find Krystal's suicide a little on-the-nose. It makes perfect sense that she'd do it, because her reason for living is gone now, but she doesn't flip out until she's back at her mom's place, and then she uses the heroin instead of slashing her wrists or jumping out a window or something more impulsive.

Basically, it's Rowling trying to be clever. "See? She's trapped in a world of slums and drugs, and so that has to be how she dies." Sukhvinder getting cut while trying to save Robbie works a lot better because it's not so blatant.

Hmm, true. I found myself wondering if an OD of heroin can just...lay you out flat like that, in presumably the short amount of time that would allow for none of the cops or Terri to break into the house.

Well, choosing to kill yourself is a really big thing. I've known people who were suicidal and depressed with little to live for, who could never decide on the right way to go through with it, despite countless time spent considering the options.

Slashing your wrists or jumping out a window are extremely painful things to do, and there's no guarantee these options would even result in death, and in any case there would be an extreme amount of prolonged agony beforehand. As it is Krystal had thought of a pretty solid, easy way to do it fairly quickly with a minimum of pain compared to other options and the emotional pain she'd gone through already.

I think a person in Krystal's position would be so intent on doing it RIGHT they would resist any more impulsive action.

I think Kay was just trying to be professional in saying she wasn't their social worker anymore. Dr. Jawanda probably was, too, because if she had only thought about the way Howard treated Vikram for helping with his first heart attack she would have realized he would probably be grateful enough to take back any charges he filed against her for her outburst in the council ( ... )

Well, all right, not Howard's corpse, but the text makes it clear only the machine is determing the difference at that point.
