Must a cartoon be cartoony?

Seriously? I think that a cartoon has more freedom to be anything compaired to a conventional show, but must it be cartoony to be good?

I think that cartoons should get to be whatever the hell they want to be. I've seen cartoons that are super-serious and realistic (mostly anime, sadly) that do a beautiful job of experimenting with the medium. Justice League would be a good American example- while it did have superheros, it went out of it's way to be super-realistic when it could. It pulled off the whole serious-heroes thing way before Heroes tried it, and did a great job. Admittedly I have a secret love of all the fun that cartooniness can bring to a project, but I don't think it's totally necessary.

Speaking of animation: GO SEE PAPRIKA. It's a fucking feast for animation fans or people who want to see the limits of the art form pushed as far as possible. Satoshi Kon is an anime god.

Oh, I totally have seen it. Its partially what brought the question up. That and John K's blog. I was nigh giddy when I found it was playing at one of our art houses.
