I have noticed. It's long. To shorten it you can use an LJ-cut. An LJ-cut is one of those links that have text under it. You can make one in rich text mode when you write a new entry.
People are definitely wasting their time standing in line like that. Harry Potter is a fun book to read, but by no means the best of literature.
And yeah, material like that as an amusing supplement to textbooks would spice history up.
