I never pretend to understand our political system, let alone America's but I don't how they can apply the death penalty in some states and not others. Surely if the US Govt supports it, then every state should enforce it - not that I think they should, I.agree with you - and vice versa.

I'll never understand politics. But then, maybe I'm/we're not supposed to.

It's complicated. There are Federal taxes and state taxes, Federal laws and state laws, Federal crimes and state crimes. I don't know the general principles that determine whether Federal or state jurisdiction applies, but then I also don't know when, why and what the Welsh Assembly and not Westminster gets to decide. So no change there!

Where US crime is concerned, it's often a matter of whether the crim crossed a state line in the commission of an offence. If so, the FBI gets to do the chasing and first dibs at charging the offender. They even have Federal pens as distinct from state pens.

That's how I feel about it too. I have my doubts as to whether the death penalty is more humane than LWOP, and yet you're right, there has to be some way to keep the most dangerous killers off the streets permanently. The trouble with the death penalty is that any mistake is one mistake too many.
