so disregard my clumsy attempts to keep you smiling

Well I was looking back on my first quarter here, and how quickly it's flown by, so I decided to start keeping this somewhat up to date again with random events and thoughts, so it doesn't all go by in a blur. So, to catch up, if anyone's interested, here goes:

Music stuff
  • Joining the one, the only, the truly incomparable Leland Stanford Junior *pause* University Marching Band, the craziest scatter band ever. I 'play' the trombone
  • Joining 2 Mikes from Jersey aka 2ME9 (band that's been around for four years, needed an extra musician, I joined on bass)
  • Playing an 80's show at 680, in a mullet, with 2ME9.
  • Random things on the setlist:
    • Tainted Love
    • Eye of the Tiger
    • Tempted by the Fruit of Another (Squeeze!)
    • Where the Streets Have No Name
    • Blister in the Sun (I got to sing this one, and it was SO much fun)
    • Come Sail Away (Styx!)
    • Come on Eileen
  • A few 2ME9 originals (which still feel like covers to me since I wasn't around when they wrote them, but are still a ton of fun to play)
  • Going to Amoeba Music. Practically skipping in joy through the aisles.
  • The fact that there's a piano in the lounge, and being able to go there almost everyday and play through The Decemberists' Cocoon.
  • The new Elliott Smith.
  • Playing guitar in the orchestra pit for Gaieties
  • Finding out about The Arcade Fire, and listening to their amazingness ...every day.

School stuff
  • Professor James Gross, lecturer for Psych 1, and his amazingly funny yet engrossing lectures
  • Going to a Symbolic Systems Forum dinner with Psychology Professor Lera Boroditsky @ FukiSushi . . great food and amazing conversation about her current research.
  • Dorm faculty Dinner with my PWR prof, Dr. Miraglia, and his wife, and finally beginning to get a sense of what's different in college writing
  • Linguistics lecture, and writing down QOTDs with Francesca
  • Bombing my first Psych midterm, feeling not-so-good about the second one, changing the class from Letter grade to Credit/No Credit . . and proceeding to have actually gotten an 89 on that second one and a 92 on my paper. Oh well, lesson learnt =)
  • The library. And the online journals available. And being able to find any article in the New York Times and the London Times since 18-something.

Girl Stuff
  • Somehow gaining a reputation for being an hooking-upper when I've always been the dating type back home. Now on a dry patch, and wanting to settle down. Funny how it works sometimes.

Random stuff
  • Hosting Margarita Night between ours and Dave's room, having it be a total success with even random people from outside the dorm coming in, with one of the drinks named "The Blitzkrieger".
  • Getting body paint on for the first football game (that's my roomate Jon to the left of me as the A, and Jordi, who plays violin in 2ME9 on my right, and Dave as the T, and Truebe as the O. Good times.
  • Working as a tutor for Barrio Assistance, and once playing "I'm a Believer" to the kids
  • My portable amplifier, which doubles as my computer speaker too
  • Midnight beach trip with a bunch of the dorm to Half Moon Bay
  • Drinking much too much on the night before Big Game and proceeding to miss said Big Game by oversleeping by 2 hours and missing the band bus. The actual full story is a little funny, I'll post it sometime. But I've since decided to drink very little, at least until the end of the quarter
  • My laptop, and its awesomeness when playing Half-Life 2
  • Being elected dorm president and doing, well, nothing really =)
  • The mysterious beeping noise in my room the other night, which I proceeded to investigate and not find any source for. Also see: the alarm clock I found yesterday IN MY CLOSET that does not belong to me and, in fact, was the source of above beeping.
  • Finding people who love good music. And books. So great!
  • The random Brazilian woman I met in my Psych class, whose husband is here for grad school - his scholarship lets her go to classes, which is awesome
  • My bike, which is always on the edge of breaking down, but I love anyway
  • The long downhill ride to classes (contrast with: the grueling uphill climb coming back!)
Hope everyone is doing great; I miss you all and will hopefully see some of you in the next couple of months.
