Try this out...

Clasp your hands together.  Now look at where your fingers go.  If you're right handed you're right thumb will be over the top of your left thumb.

Now swap the clasping round so the left thumb is above the right (or vice versa)....

Weird isn't it?

Can vary. If the BBC's website is to be believed them a lot of it is based on gender as well/what side of your brain is dominant in masculine/feminine tasks. Something like that anyway.

Its not so weird if you change your finger alignment, if you simple swap the thumbs its going to be weird because you are stretching you thumbs more....

still feels wrong though... I thought it was based on gender though- it's part of the gender determining thing on the bbc's webiste, if left is over right I think it's a female thing and vice versa. Might be talking rubbish mind.
