Thank GOD I'm not alone with that, I was a little worried since most of the reactions I read were either something like "I'll never forgive Dean, ever" or "Sam SO deserved it". I think that's too easy. Let's just hope the show explains it next week!
I understood why Dean snapped and did that, even though if was far too brutal and hard to watch. It was the culmination of his worry, stress, all the bad news... everything. And he'd just been forced by Veritas to say he was a killer (not the whole truth about Dean, but what he was feeling after his phone call with Lisa).
That said, I don't think it was either deserved by Sam, or the right thing to do. But I don't blame Dean for it, I just take it in part and parcel with his human flaws.
I think the writers took the opportunity to do a callback (they love those), to Swan Song, which ought to give folks a pause, considering what it was a call back to.
I too hope next week gives us more answers - a lot more - for both the boys.
Yes, answers, that's what we all (boys included) need more than anything. I know they'll pull through, they will go back to being brothers again one day, we just have to wait and hold on and believe in them.
Huge benefit of the doubt from my side for Dean, he wouldn't hit Sam like that if he really thought it's Sam, no way. I really hope the show explains that and it wasn't just used to shock people or get the fans at each other's throats (again).
I really like this and I totally hope you're right. The Sam deserves it crap out there is driving me crazy. If Dean truly thought it was Sam, he never would have gone to that extreme.
However, the preview for next week has me worried they won't address it.
When do they ever adress stuff like that between the boys anymore? I don't think they will, though I think you'll be able to tell from how Dean behaves. If he really thinks it isn't Sam then he'll say something like "help me find out what this is" to Cas and Bobby or whatever.
Sam doesn't deserve it, but then again I don't think he deserved it the other times Dean punched him. But, well, I'm trying to stay out of this "he deserves this" -- "he deserves that" fight, I'm no longer interested in that part of the "fandom". ;) They do what they do and deal with it (or don't deal with it) whatever I think about it won't change anything and so it isn't worth arguing about it with people who'll never see my side. But I can sooo see your frustration about all this "Sam deserves it", I can't believe people are still doing that, really.
This was my automatic assumption too -- that Dean didn't believe that was really Sam. I don't think Dean would have beaten him so brutally otherwise; otherwise, that last scene was criminally OOC.
Well, after watching last week... I'm still trying to give him that benefit of the doubt but it's getting harder each week when he just keeps being angry at Sam. No idea where the writers want to go with that not-so-nice side of Dean.

And have our hearts ripped out while waiting.

That really says it all, though.
Real emotional punch with this (no pun intended)
