Oh wow. I love this John. Love that after the shtriga he would never be far from the boys, or sleep in another room; this John is so much more loving and human than other fics portray. I am wondering how he got in this situation... I feel like maybe this IS John from '88, but I don't know how that could be...
Well, you know, side-effects of a severe concussion can be (temporary) memory-loss, and that's what's happened to John in this. He's forgotten everything that happened between that day in 1988 when he took off to a hunt and the moment he was hurt on this hunt 13 years later. So, in a way, he is the John from back then because he doesn't remember anything that happened after he left his kids.
I'm glad you're enjoying this, it's a lot of fun to write. I've always seen John as a loving father and not so much the bastard other authors might see in him, though it's really not easy to keep liking him after everything the show has had him do... ;)
Well, he was a loving father, though his methods didn't necessarily reflect that. I think the fic has filled a gap in canon for John, and a lot of it portrays him as loving, though other parts portray him as a real bastard.
One of the most heart-wrenching fics I read, (unfortunately, I can't recall who wrote it), but he took the boys to a Chuck E. Cheese type place and made them sit there and wait while he interviewed someone who worked there. It never occurred to him how amazing the place would seem to them, or thought about taking a few minutes to let them play a game, or have some pizza. It was so sad. He wasn't intentionally being thoughtless; he was just so focused that he didn't think about the boys or put them first. I think that snapshot sums up how John could be very hurtful sometimes, but not intentionally.
I've come to like him more, as time has gone by, mostly because of the fic.
