“Sam?”
He shifts.
“Sammy?”
It’s cold.
“How are you holding up?”
He turns his head, frowns.
Holding up?

When did he close his eyes?
“Sam.”
The voice belongs to his father, it’s closer now

I was with Sammy for every word of this!
Can I beg you to write the aftermath--get him on some good drugs? It's cruel to leave him like this!

I've had a leg injury once and it sucked, though I didn't have to keep standing, don't think I would have been able to do that.
Glad you liked it, really! :)

OWWWWWW! Poor Sam! No good deed goes unpunished, huh? And the song really does fit the situation. Good thing John was there for him!

And isn't it alway like this, you do something nice for someone and get punished for it somehow? ;) And John being there for him, well, there aren't enough stories out there that have that... :)
Thank you!

I love Sam's voice in this, and (like everybody else it seems) that it's a moment between Sam and John without fighting, a moment that shows that there's love between them, with John worrying and Sam finding comfort in his presence. Also, I don't know if I should laugh or cry about Sam feeling guilty for being so tall.

You know, I really do believe that Sam and John had a lot of those moments (not necessarily moments where Sam was hurt and John had to care for him, but both of them completely relaxed with each other), I mean I had a hard time with my parents when I was growing up and it's easier to remember what went wrong but that doesn't mean I didn't have good times. I think it's just not that interesting or exciting for most authors to write about the good times...
Btw, concerning the height, I think Sam is ignoring the fact that his height was actually making it easier for John to hold him up, if he had been shorter John would have had to crouch awkwardly to hold him up, not sure if he could have done that for as long as he did here... (And maybe I'm overthinking again... ;) )

And I love that scene in Dead Man's Blood: "Hey Dad, what happened to that college fund?" - "Spent it on ammo."
I think it shows that they are able to get along.
