I really commend you for taking the plunge. Many a time I have thought about moving across to Melbourne. Many a time I have been paralised by the fear of "what if...?" What if I don't get work? What if I can't find a place to live? What if I do get a job and need a babysitter? What if that one person I am meant to be with for the rest of my life is still over here and I just haven't found them yet?
Recently, it has been a case of, "life has started to get back on track over here." I have someone in my life now, who has made a niche for themselves here. They have a business they are running here. Their family is a big part of their life and their family is here. Would moving across the country screw that up? What if it does?
My studies are online, so moving over there is not that big of an issue for me. My daughter would probably appreciate life a lot more over there, so that is not so much of an issue. Perhaps I am just looking for the "what ifs" in an attempt to stay here where it is safe and comfortable?
It is much more difficult when one has children. Your own life-style often takes second place to their welfare. As for your partner, the fact is that they earn a living here makes moving very difficult. That being said, if their skills are transferable, there's no reason not to. But it must be something both of you want in the end. There is nothing stopping you from holidaying and seeing what it is like.
At the moment we have not begun renting. We will be staying with Aaron and Jen while we look for a place, most likely in the South East near you guys. It will be a little more difficult because of Ros' cat though, but we love her to bits and won't be leaving her behind.
I think I'd feel pretty bad for not being up front about our cat to the real estate agent. The copious amounts of cat fur on everything would be a dead giveaway though. I swear, I do no know how such a small cat can produce so much fur!
I think it does one good to live somewhere else, at least for a while. rabbit1080 and I moved to the UK in 1997 - returned some years later with broader perspectives.
Congrats on taking the plunge, and I look forward to the updates :)
