Title: Fantastical
Disclaimer: Don't own.
Fandom: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Pairing/Character(s): Basil, Iemitsu
Rating: PG
Summary: Horribly self-indulgent fic. Just general Basil and Iemitsu interaction, as Iemitsu teaches Basil all about life and more.

Basil's first impression of Iemitsu is tall, and then, later, gentle when the man pats him on the head and asks, "Have you traveled before?" He nods, smiling a little; he is ten, almost eleven, and given to the services of the Vongola. A talented youth, the Ninth tells Iemitsu, and fairly skilled with the flame but needing refinement and experience. So he's assigned to work under Iemitsu.

He learns quickly that Iemitsu is fond of talking of his family when they're not on duty. "I have a son your age, very cute, and the lo~veliest wife you could ever lay your eyes on." He becomes very familiar with Tsuna before they ever meet, for Iemitsu shares freely the tales his sweet Nana writes, the photographs and letters and postcards.

Basil also picks up a great deal besides field experience. Iemitsu teaches him a lot of things, especially about Japan, with its fantastical underworld of samurai and ninja and the feudal system. The legends of Gamera intrigue him immensely, and he holds the lessons from the Tales of the Silver Soul to his heart. ("Never throw away the sword you have resting in your soul." "There is no evil in those with a natural perm." The words strike a chord of awe in his young heart.) Iemitsu teaches him Japanese, too - "Because any good Vongola should know the language the First was so fond of!" He starts off slowly, and is proud when he surprises Iemitsu one day with, 'How dost thy business go, Master?'

Iemitsu had double-took before his face split with a wide grin, and Basil nearly toppled over by the following force of Iemitsu's manly back pat.

At twelve, Basil has become proficient in the fine art of photo manipulation. "It's a little game for me and Nana," Iemitsu tells him, as he seamlessly works Iemitsu's cheerful figure onto a backdrop of the Amazon. He considers adding a parrot somewhere - all jungles had parrots, right? - but figured that it would be a little too much.

"Is this all right?" He points at the screen, where Iemitsu has been captured in construction crew glory. The orange construction hat stands out vividly; absentmindedly, Basil makes a note to shade it a little more. He wants to ask if it's all right, too, that Iemitsu doesn't go home, but he doesn't speak the question aloud.

"That's good," Iemitsu says approvingly. Basil prints the image out and hands it to his master, holding it by the edges to let the ink dry.

Basil catches Iemitsu in what passes as their office, feet propped up on the desk with boots still on. Iemitsu's reading a letter, and occasionally, he makes slight grimaces. "Well, he's getting along all right, and he'll be safe enough with Reborn."

"Whom, Master?" They've taken to conversing in Japanese lately; one can never have enough practice, or so Iemitsu always declares.

"My little Tsunayoshi." He taps at a picture frame, where the image of Tsuna focuses away from the camera. New Years, the sparkler in the boy's hand is far more interesting than Nana's enthusiastic picture taking. "You might get to meet him soon."

"When thine order allows me to!" Basil looks forward to it, to meeting this gentle boy who may yet become the Tenth. Sometimes, he thinks he knows Sawada-dono as if they've already met, and he can't wait to meet face to face.

The opportunity presents itself by the next year, and with pride, Basil checks the rings before slipping them into his pocket. His master will follow, but for now, he's alone, a man on a mission. Japan! Land of the First and the Tenth, of fascinating things.

For Sawada-dono! For the Tenth!
