Summary: Dino tries to show Xanxus famiglia. Hints at the happenings of the Future Arc, takes place in the time between present and future.
They called it a day for the people, though in reality it was merely another excuse for Dino to dive into the throngs of citizens headlong, laughing easily. He didn't walk any more than a couple of steps before he stopped again, to help the fruit seller stock his wares or shine shoes as the cobbler mended a sole, and each time adoring children crowded around his feet. It got so that sometimes, he would lose sight of his men from the peripherals of his vision, and then he would stumble only to be caught by a half-dozen hands.
Once the hand that grasped his shoulder was Xanxus's, and in that momentary lull, Xanxus asked, "What did you bring me here for?" In Xanxus's grip, Dino could feel that the anger that always simmered beneath the surface was only barely being reigned in, and he sighed at that knowledge.
He considered his words; briefly, his smile faltered, before coming back in full strength again. "Just bear with it," Dino replied, finally. "Aren't you glad to be let out of house arrest?" It was an unnecessary reminder to which Xanxus only grunted and did not deign to answer.
Nor did Xanxus have a chance to, anyway, for the voices were calling again, "Master Dino! Hey, little Dino!" and the moment was broken as Dino began to move again. He knew what it was that the Cavallone was trying to show him, that the people made the boss, and true strength too came from the people. A coddled prince, the Cavallone was. (He knew better. Strength only came from oneself, and only power could make a boss. Power from within or without, but generations of tradition had already rejected his blood mercilessly. Damned sky ring - there was still a scar there, where it had burned him with its power.)
And then again, Dino repeated, "Bear with it," dropping a chaste kiss of acknowledgment against his shoulder that Xanxus ignored. There was nothing he could do about it. "You're still Vongola. You're still necessary."
"Hmph. You mean for that brat." There was a pause, a twist in his mouth as though he'd swallowed something bitter (was still expecting more). "The Varia is still the Ninth's, remember. Are you done sermonizing?"
"You've seen the reports from Rokudou-kun," Dino said, but another look from Xanxus and he left it at that. "All right, fine, I'll take you back," raised placating hands in the air in the hopes of forestalling any violence. His voice dropped a notch as he spoke, "Just remember what we're fighting for. We'll need you soon."
And then, Dino began waving off the people, all smiles again, "I'll come back down soon, all right?" Promising himself to the men and women and children in the streets when his busy scheduled allowed it, and if there were the memories of blood on his hands, it didn't stop him from patting a babe adieu. After all, it was mafia.
