his tongue runs the edges of her lips.
his teeth nip the hollows of her throat.
her taste - like any volatile thing that intoxifies fools, wanting for more - burns his mouth.
he cannot help but to gather her warmth in between his fingers, the chill of his skin slowly becoming feverish as well.
(cling to life... an old phrase lingers in his mind
i am holding as hard as i can. he shouts back to his accusing ghost.)
her pale skin is a bright contrast against the sea of shadows, but all he can see are the blemishes that made her, her.
a rough thumb brushes against the thin lines that scattered across the arms holding his shoulders. gentle fingers trace old cicatrices painting the legs that trapped his body to hover over hers.
the neck, he pauses and he takes another deep breath, this slender, fragile neck...
he could not, cannot, will never stop touching her.
(not an illusion. not a dream. real.)
he can feel the rise of a gasp (in half-surprise, in half-moan) as it grazes the webbed edges of a scar that marred her chest. it travels gently and settles on its twin at the slope of her spine.
(all of these, whether he was there or not, he did this to her.)
he takes her in before the onset of nightmares: images of a crumbling brother to white ashes and burning bones and empty sockets and him. (that Sasuke) he is truly terrified of himself that he is afraid to wake up to find everything burning to the ground.
(again.)
but her eyes, a shade lighter than white, brighter than grays, bursts into sparks. the moment where in a split second, he sees an explosion of colors beneath his lids. she lets out a cry, and he holds on, and she whispers i'm here and this is why he has her.
he breathes her in deeply.
at long last, her familiar fragrance - the scent of ether - numbs him to sleep.
