Whenever Sakura goes on missions, and Sasuke happens to be alone at home, he always keeps the coffee brewer on, filled with coffee. He tells himself it is for when Sakura comes home, a cup of fresh coffee would be easily at hand. But more often than not, the aroma of rich coffee is just a way to keep a piece of Sakura near him. Somehow, the house feels less dark and more homey with the scent of Sakura’s favorite drink wafting through the atmosphere.
And sometimes, when Sasuke is out-of-sorts in early mornings, pours it in a mug with red-white medic insignia and trudges to their living room, half-holding it out for her to take it, forgetting that she's off to a mission. Habits die hard.
Likewise, Sakura always keeps tea leaves in her pack at all times. Though she prefers her tea with milk and sugar on rare quiet afternoons with Sasuke, she takes the refreshment fresh and bitter - just how he takes it - on lonely, hard shifts or tiring missions without him.
Naruto gives a grin when he sees this. Kakashi merely ignores it. Sai asks innocently if that's how couples signal silently that they are in need of affection. The hospital staff only giggles and coos.
How like him, she muses as the liquid reflects the color of her eyes, He prefers a drink steeping in traditions and ceremonies.. And whenever Sakura sees stalks float upright in her cup from her habitual tea sessions without him, she smiles and remembers that no matter how much a cynic Sasuke is, he's actually drinking tea because he's a bit superstitious.
Sasuke believes, and her smile wavers, heart-broken and hopeful for him, that he needs all the luck in the world for this fragile happiness to last.
note: one of the common japanese superstitions are, when a tea stalk floats vertically upright in your cup, it means something good will come your way.
