Jeff’s mind reeled as he leaned his forehead against Annie’s as they both tried to catch their breath. They weren’t looking at each other. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. He was looking at her shoes (which he really liked) and she seemed to be focusing on a spot on his shirt.

What the hell had just happened? Okay, he knew what happened physically. He and Annie kissed. He kissed Annie. They kissed. There was kissing. Some really amazing, fantastic kissing that had left his head kind of foggy. Which wasn’t good, considering he had to figure out what the hell was going on. Britta and Slater both confessed their love for him and what did he do? He ran away and made out with a third girl.

Seriously, what the hell was going on?

He really wasn’t sure. He had no idea what he wanted to do about the Slater/Britta situation. He had no idea why he decided that kissing Annie was a good idea. All he knew was that he wanted to do it again.

Jeff had thought about kissing Annie quite a bit after the debate. Not to the point that he was obsessing over it, or anything like that. But he had wondered what it would be like if she hadn’t pushed him away as soon as he dropped Simmons. Well… he had just experienced it… and it was so much better than all of his fantasies. Yes, fantasies. He was like a 12 year old girl. Only instead of imagining long walks on the beach with an emotionally disturbed vampire, he imagined kissing Annie. Over and over and over again.

And now he actually had kissed Annie. And he still wanted to kiss her over and over again. Their foreheads were still pressed together, his hand in her hair, the other at her waist. So he decided he was going to kiss her again. He’d worry about Britta and Slater tomorrow. For the moment, this felt good. This felt right.

But before he could lean in to claim her lips again, Annie was backing away from him. Her hands lingered on his chest for a moment before she took a step back. He looked at her with a confused expression, but she couldn’t see it because she was looking at the ground. “Annie?”

She looked up at him then, her eyes wide and guilty. “I can’t believe we did that.”

“What-?”

“Britta’s one of my best friends. I can’t believe I just made out with the guy she confessed her love for less than ten minutes ago.”

Jeff winced. Shit. He hadn’t even thought about how this was going to effect the whole Britta/Slater situation. He looked at Annie. “So what do we do now?”

Annie shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve never been in this situation before.”

Neither had Jeff. He looked back at the doors he’d come from. There was no way he could go back and sort this out now. And not even just because of the guilt. If he was going to be completely honest, the Annie high he was on right now vastly outweighed any guilt he felt about the situation. It wouldn’t be fair to Britta or to Slater to go in there and try to make sense of it all while he was still riding this high.

“Come on,” he said, motioning toward the parking lot. “I’ll give you a ride home.”

Annie’s eyes widened. “What?”

“I’ll give you a ride home. You were getting ready to leave the state with Vaughn, so I know you don’t have a car.”

“I figured I’d just walk,” Annie resisted.

“Annie, you have luggage and bags and stuff,” Jeff said, pointing out the bags that still set at Annie’s feet.

She opened and closed her mouth a few times before saying, “You can’t just leave, Jeff. Two women in there confessed their love for you. You can’t just run away from them.”

Jeff decided that honesty was the best way to go at this point. “I really don’t think it would be a good idea to go in there and talk to two women who claim to love me when all I can think about is how badly I want to kiss you again.”

Annie’s lips parted in surprise and a blush covered her face. After a few moments she regained her composure and said, “If that’s the case then it’s probably a really bad idea for you to drive me home.”

He nodded at her. “True. But I’m still going to do it.” He leaned down to pick up one of Annie’s bags, which put him back into very close proximity with Annie. He could smell her perfume, he could hear the rustle of her clothes as she tensely tried to move away from him. He was overtaken by the urge the kiss her again, this one even more powerful than the last time. He swallowed hard and then straightened, silently motioning for Annie to follow him to his car. Jeff was going to have to summon all of his strength to restrain himself from pushing his tongue down Annie’s throat.

He made it an admirable 45 seconds. As soon as they reached his Lexus, he dropped the bag he had in his hand and had Annie pressed against the car, his lips fused to hers. Fortunately for his lips (and other parts of him), Annie only resisted for a second before sighing into his mouth and grabbing desperately at his lapels. He kissed her slower this time, trying to savor it.

Just as they were breaking apart, Annie murmured against his lips, “You don’t have a windshield..”

Jeff smiled at her. They were still close enough that when she blushed and lowered her eyes, her lashes brushed his cheek. When she looked back up at him, she looked sad. “You driving me home is a bad idea on may levels.”

Nodding, he said,, “Yeah, but I’m doing it anyway.”

The drive was silent but not (entirely) awkward. Jeff was grateful it was a short distance. He was also grateful that they hit all green lights, because he was pretty sure if he’d had the chance to stop the car and look at her he’d be all over her again.

Surprisingly, though, when he stopped the car in front of the house, it was Annie who unbuckled her seat belt and practically climbed on top of him, attacking him with her lips. Not that he was complaining, though. It was frantic and almost desperate, and at one point Annie leaned back too far and the horn went off, but Jeff was able to grab her face and kiss her again before she had the chance to be too mortified to continue.

They separated, breathing heavily, limbs tangled, clothes rumpled. “Whoa,” Jeff breathed out. Annie smiled at him and moved back over to the passenger seat. “That was…” he continued.

Annie’s smile faded a bit. “I just figured that was probably going to be the last time I got to do that, so…”

Jeff’s heart almost stopped. At that moment, the thought of never kissing Annie again was the most horrifying thing possible. “Why would that be the last time?”

Annie fixed him with a Well, duh look. “Because now you have to go and decide whether you want to be with Slater or Britta.”

Huh. Jeff had kind of… forgotten about that. He looked over at Annie, who looked completely miserable. And her being miserable made him feel miserable.

This was… good. Not the Annie being miserable part. But the knowing how he felt part. And the knowing why part. Not being confused about how he felt about the woman in front of him… it was nice.

“What if…” he started, not entirely sure where he was going with it, “… I don’t want to choose either of them?”

Annie rolled her eyes. “You’re seriously not going to choose either just because it’s too hard to choose between them?”

“No, what I’m saying is…” his hand wandered over to hers, brushing it lightly. “What if there’s a third option?”

Her eyes widened, and Jeff couldn’t really believe that even after three really great makeout sessions it hadn’t entered her mind that maybe he’d want her instead.

Annie’s expression of surprise changed into a genuine smile, before going back to being unhappy. “Jeff,  I just broke up with Vaughn.”

Jeff felt his heart sinking.

“And… you just had two women declare their love for you in front of the entire school. I’m just saying…” she met his eyes. “We both really need to think about this. About ALL of this.”

Jeff resisted the urge to grab her and kiss her again. He resisted the urge to tell her that all he wanted was her. Because he knew she was right. He was currently caught up in the moment, and there was a lot going on surrounding that moment. He had to think. He needed to really think.

He sighed, leaning his head back against his seat, closing his eyes. “You’re right. As usual.”

He heard Annie giggle, and then felt her move closer to him, and then felt her lips leave a lingering kiss at the corner of his mouth. “Thanks for the ride home,” she whispered, and then kissed him again on the cheek.

Jeff opened his eyes to look at her, and his heart almost stopped, just at the soft way she was smiling at him, the way her eyes were shining. Had Britta or Slater ever made him feel that way? He wasn’t sure.

Yeah, Annie was right. He needed to think.

He smiled back at her. “I’ll call you.”

Her smile grew. “Okay.” And then she was out of the car, walking toward her house. After she unlocked the door, she turned around and waved at him.

It was going to be a long summer.
