I always thought that the whole thing with Lydia was about House trying to reach out to someone. I knew it wouldn't work out as a long-term thing, but as a short-term thing it worked pretty well. It was about comfort, and that was something that he couldn't get from anyone who was already in his life. It had to be someone new, and that's why they put Lydia on the show.
