In exactly 9 nine days I'll be sitting in a plane to LA, on my way to visit my husband dearest. And slowly wibbliness is creeping up on me. So much to do, so little time. (Ain't it always ( Read more... )

I am desperately trying to remember if I locked my case when I went to America in 2005 and I actually think I didn't put one on. I know the locks I purchased are still in their wrapper. There actually wasn't anything of value in there (apart from my clothes that is. I took my computer and everything else on as hand luggage. Of course, I'm not sure what you're allowed to take on the plane now though.

Have a wonderful time however you pack your bags.

You're only allowed to take one piece of hand luggage with you. Since it's a long flight, I want to pack the really important (and of course, valuable) things in there and leave the rest in my suitcase.
Not planning on taking my notebook with me - I kind of like it too much to risk damage or lost... ;-))
Though, if Michael doesn't get his back to work, I might have to reconsider. *sighs*

TSA lock is bought by now. I didn't want to risk theft or damage to my suitcase - and not locking seems to invaliate your luggage insurance. Now, that would be really a pain - paying for an insurance that refuses to refund damage or loss exactly when you need it!

If you're going to lock your luggage, you MUST get a TSA-approved one. Otherwise, yes, they'll just rip it off - and then your luggage will be unlocked anyway.

Have a safe trip to LA! How long will you be there? Any particular plans for your visit?

I bought one today. Felt better about it, plus, in the shop they told me that German baggage insurance companies refuse to pay if the baggage wasn't locked.

I'll be staying from March 3rd until March 22nd, in Oxnard, CA.
So far we don't have any plans. Michael doesn't have a vacation, so we're going to do mostly local things in the afternoons and evenings, and perhaps make some trips during the weekends. We'll see.
Most important thing for me is seeing him and spending some time together - after having been separated since Mid January...

I bought a TSA lock when I flew Seattle->London last year. It was something like $8 at Target, so not a huge deal, though I don't know if it's harder to find if you're in another country (that would make a difference). I hate the idea of ANYONE going through my things, honestly, but at least if you have the TSA lock and something in your luggage gets ruined, you know who to sue.

That's a pretty good point, what with "who to sue"... ;-))

I bought one today. They're slightly more expensive over here (at 9.95 €), but that was to be expected. After all, we only need them when we're flying to USA. Locked-up baggage isn't opened anywhere else (unless by customs in your presence), as far as I know.

Yeah, it's kind of sad to have to think that way, but there it is. I figure if you are doing everything right, and something gets lost/damaged/stolen, you have a much better case for their having to replace it. (I hate checking baggage anyway, honestly. I used to try to get everything into a carry-on, which I could do up until they stopped letting you take enough shampoo. I just remember ending up in Berlin while my luggage decided to have a holiday in Amsterdam. I'd rather keep it all with me!)

Argh. That's pretty much a nightmare, isn't it?
Okay, so Berlin isn't exactly a problem when it comes to buying stuff, but then, it's always infuriating if you have to spend money on things you already own, just because they didn't manage to organize the luggage transport properly.

Just hoping things go well with my luggage. The good thing is, I've chosen a non-stop flight AMS to LAX, so at least I (and my stuff!) don't have to change anywhere.

In the shop they told me that German baggage insurance policies refuse refunds for unlocked baggage. After that it was pretty much clear that I bought one of the TSA locks.
