[[Scene]] Ron's decision and Edgeworth's confusion.

Apr 27, 2008 19:18

Miles: *A couple of days after this fateful tree in the latest man-filter entry, Edgeworth taps his fingers on his desk at his home office, eyeing it again. He'd said he'd call, and he had just the right pretext to do so. He dials DeLite's number.*

Ron: *After four rings, Ron answers at the other end of the line.* ...H-hello? *His voice is clear and at a normal speaking tone, and he sounds surprised.*

Miles: Evening, DeLite. It's Miles Edgeworth.

Ron: Yes, but... why??

Miles: *He frowns.* Why what?

Ron: Why are you-- o-oh. *slightly mopey* Please don't lecture me, sir! I haven't been online for a reason.

Miles: *Vaguely disdainfully.* As if I keep track of your internet habits, DeLite. I'm calling for a personal reason. I wanted to know when would be a good time to take measurements on the costumes.

Ron: *a beat* The costumes! Wow... I nearly forgot about those.

Miles: Hmph. Glad I called to remind you then.

Ron: I-I'm sorry. I've been pretty busy with other things. Um... Research and stuff. Actually, I'm not quite sure when I'll be free again.

Miles: Hm. *He sounds a bit disappointed.* Is this for work? You're not still- *He cuts himself off, aware that he might set off another emotional outburst and not really willing to take that risk.* Well, regardless, there's plenty of time.

Ron: There is! In fact... u-um... *a long pause*

Miles: ...Yes?

Ron: *nervous* M-my schedule might be full for a while. I wish I could give you an exact time frame, but... *very quietly* it would depend on what they decide for me...

Miles: *Groans* You decided to go through with it then.

Ron: I-I.... *pause* I-I'm not sure. I've been doing a lot of thinking the past couple of days, and..... *he doesn't finish this sentence*

Miles: Well you know my opinion on the matter. I won't say any more about it. *Frustrated* I just felt it would be prudent to call at this time to see how- *He stops.* That is, I'm not quite sure quite how such things work, whether it's best to take measurements before one starts making the costumes or to start and then take them in.

Ron: *moves straight onto the next topic, but he sounds like he has heavier topics on his mind* Er... we'll definitely have to take lots of measurements. Of course. That's the most important step. Um, asides from sewing the outfit itself...

Miles: *Casually* Understood. Most of my experience is with tailors, whose primary job is to take in suits that are already made. But I imagine it's easier and cheaper to make it to specific measurements.

Ron: *simply* Yeah. *pause* Um. Mr. Edgeworth?

Miles: Hm?

Ron: *has difficulty speaking the next words* You know Mr. Wright better than I do. Um. Did he... Do you th-think... *sighs a bit, and starts a new sentence* He meant every word he said to me, didn't he?

Miles: *There's a long sigh.* DeLite... Wright was... He wasn't angry at you. But he says things when he's angry that he doesn't mean, sometimes.

Ron: But when you're angry, the truth tends to fly out your mouth! It do it all the time! H-he must've seen me as a contemptible sneak all this time... and I didn't know!

Miles: *He winces.* Well, once he told me he wished I was dead. I'd like to say that wasn't the truth, though it may have been at the time. If it was, he doesn't feel that way anymore. You can always change someone's opinion of you. *He trails off, sounding uncomfortable.*

Ron: *pauses; his tone clearly suggests he's trying to get something out of Edgeworth in the next question* Even yours?

Miles: *A long-suffering sigh.* You seem to me like a person who has a lot of growing yet to do, if I may be perhaps a bit too frank. Perhaps after you finish that. *He growls and the next part sounds forced and grudging.* Yet the mere fact that I've made this call is evidence that my opinion of you has changed since we met, isn't it? I still suspect that you're amoral and craven, but I have friendly relations with people who have done worse than steal, at the moment. *He sounds as if he's only just reminded himself of this fact.*

Ron: *a few awkward beats pass before he replies, sounding surprisingly calm and accepting -- almost as though rehearsed* That's right. I'm an amoral, craven thief who needs to grow up.

Miles: *Edgeworth is completely taken aback.* ...D-DeLite?

Ron: *with confidence and no hint of bitterness* Thank you, sir. I mean it. I know what I need to do... Good bye!

Miles: *Still wary* What are you-

Ron: *a soft click, and complete silence... no white noise*

Miles: *He pulls the phone away from his face and looks at the display, which reads out the call duration time. He frowns and closes it, looking thoughtful for a moment, and then he begins to type a message into his journal.*

I called DeLite, Armando. He... I’m still not quite sure what’s going on. He sounded awfully strange to me. He didn’t seem upset at all, merely subdued and then... determined. And he said he “...know[s] what [he] need[s] to do.” It doesn’t sound as though he’s going to go through with applying to be a prison guard, though I certainly wouldn't put it past him... It sounds like he’s going to do something, at least. Do you have any idea what that means?
