Sam practically bounced out of the car, slinging his overstuffed duffel over his shoulder. "Bye, Dad. Bye, Dean," he said. "Call me and let me know how the hunt went."
He pretended not to notice the flicker of sadness in his father's eyes. "We will, son," John promised. "Be careful. And call us if you need anything."
Dean rolled his eyes. "Sammy'll be fine. This is the perfect place for a geek like him. Can we go now?"
"I'll talk to you guys soon," Sam promised, turning and heading down the road. It had been his idea for them not to drop him off in front of his dorm. He didn't own much and they weren't the kind of family given to public displays of affection. Saying goodbye and going their separate ways wasn't really that foreign to any of them, though Sam was usually left with Dean looking after him while their dad went after whatever nasty was on his radar that week.
Sam finally found himself outside of the dorm building he had been assigned to. He took a breath and squared his shoulders. He needed to do this - to prove to himself and to Dean and his dad that he could live a normal life.
