Backstreet Boys @ Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
After work today Lara and I went out for dinner and then to Rod Laver Arena (below) to see the Backstreet Boys!!! Shizzer
The last time they were here was ...2008? and I found out about it too late to get tickets, so I really regretted not being able to go last time. This time however....
We were seated in the "1st floor" - not ground floor but very middle area at the back. At first I thought we were going to be too far, but when we got there the arena wasn't as big as we'd thought so we still had a fairly decent view (below). This is me, before it started and most people were still out getting their merch. I bought a t-shirt and a book thing (stuck a smily face because I have this super retarded expression
)
Sometimes Lara took video footage, and sometimes I did... but was very careful not to scream/sing while recording because then all you'd hear is my rabid broken screams (voice = gone). At several points I just wanted to cry. I guess partly because I've been a pretty hardcore BSB fan since I was like 10 ~ 11 and this is my first time to see them. It was a very touching and meaningful experience for me = something like "fulfilling a childhood wish"
ah, corny I know but so true, thats why I wanted to cry... but actually I couldn't because I was wearing contacts and... idk I just can't cry like usual when wearing them. yeah I cry a lot, so what?
The opening act was Rikki-Lee. She's an Aussie singer who was on Australian Idol. I don't have anything against her but she was on for 45 damn minutes! and then it was another 1/2 hour til BSB took the stage
. The stage set-up seemed a little small, but it turns out they only had a DJ on the stage with them and 4 female back-up dancers (I was expecting a band to be there as well but never mind).
They started out with Everybody (Backstreet's Back) and OH MAH GAWWWD!!!! talk about back in the day... That was just THE perfect song to get the party started. Everybody went crazy
Then they went straight in to We've Got It Goin' On. I really didn't expect them to kick out the old old ooooolllddd classic stuff at all but it was most welcome and another high-energy song
. Next was PDA, from their new album, This Is Us. I like this song a lot. Actually this and Straight Through My Heart are my faves, but it didn't seem like most people knew it.... and that was obvious but I think for the most part both the audience and um... band (?) had a good time with it. I certainly did!
As usual the bulk of the setlist remains a blur, order-wise but I know for sure they played;
Bye Bye Love
The One
If I Knew Then
Helpless
Shattered
I Just Want You To Know
Bigger
She's a Dream
This Is Us
Larger Than Life
Undone
As Long As You Love Me
The Call
Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart)
Shape of My Heart
Incomplete
Helpless When She Smiles
Unmistakable
All of Your Life (You Need Love)
Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely
and the final song was I Want It That Way, with the encore Straight Through My Heart. And they may or may not have played Boys Will Be Boys....
ah, I don't know what to say. I totally had an extra special spazz attack for Larger Than Life, Quit Playin' Games and Straight Through My Heart, although I'm sure I spazzed at the start of every song that I recognised, lol
Every couple of songs there was a short break where the guys went backstage to change outfits, but during that time they played a small clip parodying movies and inserting a BSB as a character and playing with the plot. The 1st one was Howie as um... that guy in Fast & Furious, then I think it was AJ's one was Brad Pitt's character in Fight Club ("The first rule about the Backstreet Boys Fanclub is that you don't talk about the Backstreet Boys Fanclub" LOOOLLLL~~~~) then Brian's one where he was the prince from Enchanted, and last was Nick as Neo from The Matrix.
Its 2:48am right now and I should really get to sleep because I'm seeing Aural Window (a Melbourne band) tomorrow night ---erm, 1:20am Sunday morning --
I have one more thing to say. Its so weird when back in the day I had a crush on Nick Carter when he looked like this (below left) and now starting that crush again with him looking like he does now (below right). Nothing ~wrong~ but just a little funny and embarassing
its cos he aint a Backstreet BOY now, he's a MAN!
