I pick and choose. There's a lot of interesting stuff in TS3 that's fun to tie into the TS2 canon, and I get a lot of inspiration from thinking up strange ways to connect the dots. But I also don't feel bad taking liberties because TS3 already screwed up far enough that I couldn't possibly do anything worse. And I love messing with family trees!
I had no idea delving into the Goth family tree (Mortimer/Gunther side) would branch out SO much. The thing I really like about the Sims 3 is that it kind of brings in a back story for all the deceased Goths that are just tombstones in the Sims 2. I think my favourites are the woman of the Goth family that have never really gotten their story told, particularly Frida and Lolita Goth. I find it interesting that Frida is actually connected to the Landgraabs, and that the Goth/Landgraab family is connected much farther back than Sims 2. And Lolita is just a fun side character with so many possibilities because you can definitely mess with how she's connected to the family tree!
I view Sims 3 as an alternate universe. In fact, I see all three games that way, as separate things. I have some story-based reasons for doing that (the meta "this is all just a video game" angle), but I also think Sims 2 has more than enough back story, game features, and interconnected mysteries to work with on its own (more than can possibly makes sense together, in fact). I can see how others have fun attempting to connect all the dots between the games, and I like to play around with it within the idea of it being an alternate reality (and even like to draw inspirations from the more plot-based console games, etc.). If I were to choose to see it all as one timeline, I would definitely pick and choose to suit my own needs. I really don't think it's possible to use it all and have it make perfect sense

Trying to piece together all 3 games in a sort of plotted storyline is kind of impossible I'm learning. It's difficult to figure out sort of where the story begins and how it ends without getting too far ahead of yourself. At one point does the timeline shift from Sims 3 canon to Sims 2? I think it depends which medium you're working with when deciding which facts are more important. And then you throw in Sims 1... Woo. The shift from Sunset Valley (founded by the Goths) to Old Country/Maybe?Riverview to Old Town/Eventually?Pleasantview caused by Gunther Goth is insane. I'm sorry, but who in their life time just moves around creating towns? It's daunting to kind of piece such a vast/long timeline together. I'm assuming these moves/town creations didn't take a month to complete. We're talking years. Probably 50 from loose canon
