Crowley is muddy.

And angry, and tired - not from the fighting, but from this, all of this, the noise and the blood and the trembling ground and the entire fucking nerve of it, the gall of this fucking disaster to just stroll into his life like an old friend, right when everything was so -

He was so -

He's just muddy, from top to toe, smears and splotches of earth blurring into reddish spatters of something it's probably best not to look too closely at. His sunglasses are long gone, and his eyes are wide and gold-vicious in his head.

He's still standing guard over the bomb, pike in hand, a deepening ring of bodies littering the churned ground around him and his fellow defenders.

He's trying not to think about the fact that for every attacker they cut down, two more seem to take its place. Or about the fact that if the ground keeps shaking like that beneath them - beneath the bomb - it won't be the invaders they'll have to worry about. He's trying not to think about -

Well, suddenly he's not thinking, because something round and ( ... )

"What was that?" says an ichor-covered man with a big axe, who was fighting monsters nearby.

Something shifted and squelched oddly -- more doom?

Ava has a headache.

Ava is covered in other things' blood and guts.

Ava is carrying a giant pink wand with a heart and wings on it; it is also covered in other things' blood and guts.

Ava's still here.

(Ava's goddamn teleportation powers have let her down at essentially the only time she really would have liked them to work. She wants a refund on this headband.)

The ground shudders.

That's not unusual.

What's unusual is that this shudder is extremely localised - around Crowley, in fact. As he lifts the sphere to look at it more closely, the earth seems to twitch around his feet, shuddering and shifting like goosebumps whispering across skin.

The demon doesn't seem to notice.

He doesn't seem to notice anything.

On top of everything else, things are so haywire that Ava can't tell if that twitching is demonic in nature or not.

"Crowley--?"

There's barely any grass beneath them, between the frost and the fighting and the crater. Only a few desperate patches, peeking raggedly through the mud.

All of it, every blade, seems to  l e a n  in towards Crowley, as though the very air around him were inhaling.

Yes, he says, as though from far away. The grass ripples softly. He turns around to look, pike-tip dragging through the mud. Ava.
YesAva

His eyes are - unfocused isn't the word. It's not that he's not looking at her, exactly. It's that he seems to be looking through her.

... Even by today's standards, this is creepy.

"Are you okay?" she whispers.

Wait. Whispers? This is a battleground.

"ARE YOU OKAY?"

Yes, he says. He's not whispering, but there's a - rustle to his voice; a soft, earthy echo. I worked on Plants, you see.
YesI worked on Plants, you see

Unheeded, the pike drops from Crowley's hand into the mud, as Crowley flexes his fingers experimentally.

Below his hand, the earth bULGes.

Ava jumps back, startled, then ... regains her footing and keeps stepping back.

(Not too far, of course.

Monsters and all that.)

"Right," she says weakly.

"Sure."

Ever so delicately, Crowley's tongue flickers out to taste the air.

He can... taste it. Stronger than the stench of the creatures, or the acrid reek coming from the direction of the lake; it's solid against his face, the way the wet, grassy air is solid, down just above the earth.
upon thy belly shalt thou go
Just, he says, stretching his hand out a little now, palm facing towards the earth, stand...
Just stand...

He can see the mud on Ava's skin and clothes, standing out like heat in infra-red. It seems more real than the rest of her. He can feel the grass beneath them, each living blade a faint tickle at his temples.

and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life
Still.Still.

Below their feet, the rumbling earth suddenly... isn't.
