Today, her scarf hiding her scars is a bit of blue silk -- the nicest one she owns.

Kaylee drops off an envelope at the bar.

The note to Charlie McGee says this:

Hi Charlie,

This is for Qianbeth Hua. It is captures and a letter. I promised her I would do this and I have done it. I would appreciate it if you let her have these.

Thank you
Kaylee Frye

The note to Qianbeth Hua, in Taos, New Mexico, says this:

Hello Qianbeth. I did make it back to Vidalia and I did a little bit of recon work and here is what I found out. Your mother Ellen is doing well and is regarded with respect by the folks she works with in all walks. Her job is a steady one and she seems to take pride in her work. There is some pension coming to her as long as she stays with it all and it should be enough to have her taken care of in about ten years. She has earned a fair amount of leave and does not appear to have taken any in a long while but her boss does seem a good sort from everything I could suss out and I know she will look out for her.

I took the jitney out to the end of town and got some pictures of her house (and her too but not in the house). I do not know if it was the house you knew as a child but it is where she is living now. It looks pretty smart and cared for. Based on the house and her employee file I would say she is earning a decent wage and living a very quiet life. I did not speak with her directly myself for reasons which I am sure you can understand. These captures are the best I could do.

I hope you are well and will be well in your life in New Mexico.

After a moment's consideration, Kaylee requests, quite calmly, that a copy also be kept for Susannah Dean -- and Kaylee couldn't say why if you asked her, just one of those instinctual moves that seem like a good idea at the time.

And if it backfires --

It's not like it's the worst thing that's ever happened to her.

With a slight frown, Kaylee turns and heads for the fire. Her hands are cold.
