just quickly now

This is happening so often lately I'm gonna make a post about it (sorry for bothering the thousands it doesn't apply to)

Please don't use the layouts I make as "bases" for layouts to which you add banners/edit and then redistribute. It's flattering, yes, but it's not that hard to make your own layouts. No really. I may be being unecessarily hard- ( Read more... )

Just to make sure, but it's all right to add our own headers for personal use, so long as we don't redistribute them, right?

Anyone who says that should be flattering is full of crap. It's theft, plain and simple, trying to pass someone's hard work--and skill, you make such excellent layouts--off as their own. They deserve a hard kick in the pants.

Oh it's not as bad as plagiarism: they do acknowledge that I'm the one who wrote the "stylesheet" and they don't remove the tag from the code. The good ones ask that credit be given to MV and only credit for the modifications go to themselves; the bad ones simply acknowledge MV as some kind of base-layout factory and ask for "layout credit" to go to themselves.

I think the idea is that sometimes people would love to have layouts personalised to a certain fandom etc. but they may lack the design talent themselves, which is where these "modifiers" pop up. And instead of making their own layouts from scratch (which they may view as inferior) they use an existing layout, so that the quality of the product is better than it might otherwise.

Bottom line is I don't make layouts as a resource for other layouts. And especially because I've already said 'no' to the nice ones who ask if it's allowed, it's unfair to them to simply ignore the others who don't even bother.

This comment confuses me. Besides the obvious ones that MV posted personally I take it?

I have a bad feeling my brain is just being dense tonight sorry but I had to ask

I did some digging and after paying close attention I see two particular users who seem to have very... MV-esque layouts time after time again.

And some great pieces by Estilomar, who I've come to love. -addicted to rounded corners right now-

Oh someone I think sourfree told me about you recently. You've already found yourself in my icons and now... hopefully, when I figure the code out, I hope to use one of your layouts.

Ugh... Just have to figure out how to do this html coding thing more efficiently and effectively and actually it's CSS, right? I'm clueless but learning.

Thanks for the gorgeous work!

oh wow. yeahh i've seen layouts that I go "wow. that is so MV" lol. if I do edit layouts, I never expect credit for the modifications because they're minor. I hope this stops!
