I used to always smooth things over. But it took having a couple friendships in a row where bottling things up inside just led to bigger arguments when we both exploded from the pressure. It's alot harder to talk about things because you don't want to upset the other person. But I've noticed that resentment is like an infection. It just keeps spreading until everything is poisoned. I don't want that to keep happening. I do smooth things over still on occasion, but I'm not as comfortable with it as I used to be. ^_^
