commen_sense posted a very interesting interview with Deanne Bray (the actress who plays Emma) here.

Credit to the interview goes to riddler039

My favorite bits - may include vague spoilers for Heroes )

I do know that Emma will be close friends with Peter (not a love interest)

Damn them! GRR!

I mean, normally, I'd be thrilled by a guy/girl platonic friendship, but given the shift in attitude, this one just feels like it was done for the shallow reasons you mentioned and that makes me mad! Because I was rooting for them, too, and they have wonderful chemistry (and, come on, Heroes! How often do you get chemistry between non-related characters on this show???), and she's so far been a wonderful, strong character and it would be so, so nice to have a 'ship between two good characters on the show.

I'm also annoyed about the Noah thing, because I was hoping for Noah/Angela, but if they were ever thinking that, they clearly chickened out on that, too. BLAH.

I think your analysis of the hospital scene looks about right. :) But... how did Nathan get his ring back from the hitman...? Also, it's just interesting how many characters get handcuffed/strapped to beds on this show...

I'm so excited that I got my lip-reading question answered!

Oh, and, from the full interview:

RR: (Raekon) In what way was the "Christopher" character connected or related to Emma?

DB: You'll see in episode 4x09. Christopher will be mentioned.

Ha, mentioned again in Brother's Keeper. I think all of us who assumed he was a brother not a boyfriend are about to be vindicated. Hee. Heroes, you are so transparent. *g*

Yeah, I admit that I was one of those who thought it was her SO because of a picture on her wall that showed her being very couply with a guy. But we are talking about a show here, that uses every excuse to show Peter and Nathan's wedding pic, so yeah. It probably is her brother. *g*

I know. This is the first time where a large portion of the fanbase is actually rooting for a hook up instead of keeping it platonic and they choose them for the first heterosexual friendship? Oh how gladly I would exchange all the horrible failed hook ups and romances of the past for this one.
But I'm cutting the writers some slack here because I think in this case it's NBC who pulled the plug. The casting calls for Emma said 'potential love interest', they even had a chemistry test with Milo during Deanne's audition where he rooted for her, so they had definitely had a romance in the back of their minds. Damn those vocal, pathetic, shallow fans for ruining that and damn NBC for not having the guts for a slightly unconventional romance. Same goes for Noah/Angela obviously.

DB just seems so cool! But aw, crap, not a love interest. I was thinking that she seems stubborn enough that she wouldn't bother following Peter around or get into things that would get her killed otherwise. Heh, expressive lips ( ... )

Yeah, I had a good feeling that she would not fall into the trap all the other failed romantic interests had fallen into. And I wanted to see sappy, mooning Peter and sarcastic Emma being hilarious and adorable together. They would have been such a fun couple.

Heh, expressive lips.

Heh. I like how we are all thinking the same thing here...

I was actually pretty sure that this came *after* the hugs on the rocks sequence, which made me a bit worried because it seemed to have an air of finality. I'm glad to be wrong about that. I was worried it might be after the rock pics too but the one picture of Peter touching Matt seems to indicate he still has his healing. That touch seems too purposeful for just a regular gesture of concern and I hope Peter would not press on Matt's chest wounds like that without reason ( ... )

Me too :) You mentioned that there were fans vocally against them being in a relationship? I hadn't heard about that, but thats unfortunate, especially if it caused an end to that storyline. Peter's clearly smitten. She doesn't even seem significantly older than him (anyway, he likes older men brothers people) -- and it would be the perfect excuse to throw in jokes about her being a cradle-robber ;) My partner's 8 yrs older than me and that joke NEVER gets old ( ... )

To be fair, it was most prominent before Emma was actually introduced on screen and a reaction to the first set pics and promo stills. Of course I also don't know, if this is what made them change their mind but it doesn't take a TV analyst to realize that this romance would not appeal much to their target demographic. Of course I and you cradle-robber think differently. ;)

Re: the spoiler speculation

I'm actually very confused again after Krings's latest comments. :/

But was fandom really against the idea of a Peter/Emma hook-up because of the way she looks? I hadn't heard that. It's so wrong on so many levels.

Like I said to anansi, it was more prominent before she was actually introduced on the show and the initial knee jerk reaction to the first set pics and promo stills. I have seen quite a few remarks about her being too old and not hot enough for Peter all over the place, though.

I don't know exactly how much older the actress is, but I guess if they did go there, they'd have to acknowledge the age difference somehow (through either a discussion between them, or an observation from another character such as Angela), because obviously everyone is thinking it.

Deanne Bray is actually only six years older than Milo but it probably doesn't help that he tends to look much younger. I still think they fit visually in a way that neither of his past girlfriends did. Or perhaps the actor's chemistry and writing is just that much better. Hah, and I would love to see Angela's reaction to her.

I admit, I'm very torn about this. On the one hand she has a better chance of being developed as a character, if she doesn't end up as a love interest. This also improves her chances of sticking around much longer. On the other hand the scenes with her and Peter had a *very* romantic element and it's the first Heroes romance I would be actually rooting for. I don't really get it, to be honest.

This may be further proof of the La-La Land I live in, but I'm convinced this is a line they are feeding us because they got cold feet about presenting Emma to us as a love interest. Same thing with Gretchen. Everything still feels very romantic within the show, but their publicity is designed to calm people down... which gives an opportunity for the people who really want it to speak up, rather that the show only witnessing backlash and then quickly backing away from it (as with Mohinder/Maya). Which isn't to say this is deliberate strategy to judge how well we like it before we commit -- just that they have decided to shut p because they don ( ... )

Even if the current episodes are platonic, I would bet money on a kiss before the season finale.

Oh, I hope you are right. If not, I'll join you in Denial land and fan fic.

The best I would hope for is the cop getting possessed by Sylar rather than Nathan, but I think this is clearly the moment when Sylar regains his body and probably loses a mental battle against Nathan.

Yeah, I think you are right. After reading Kring's comments earlier, I was afraid for a second that THIS is the death scene and Adrian only plays a corpse or one of Sylar's mind games after the episode. But Adrian's comment reassured me a little.

Is it wrong that I'm half hoping the flight scene would actually come first?

No, and I think your spec makes sense. Perhaps we are over interpreting the pic of Matt and Peter.

I didn't read all of the comments in here, but one thing to note about the mention of Christopher in 4x09: The ORIGINAL 4x09 was "Shadowboxing", but the title card change put into place by NBC has the billing as 4x09 and the episode as 4x08. Trust me when I say that, in off-the-record bits, it was clarified that when she said 4x09, she meant "Shadowboxing".

The title-card change has affected things oddly. "Shadowboxing" should have been 4x09, and even my Comcast box was confused and put up the wrong info at first.

Ahh, okay. The numbering is really confusing this season. But with the explanation we got about Christoper last episode, it makes sense that Deanne meant "Shadowboxing".
