You know what's really sad? I just had to throw away a pair of knee socks that I love very much, and have had for about 3 years. They had lots of very small blue stripes of varying shades and a cute little hole near one knee. But there was also a gigantic hole in the other heel, so I declared them officially dead.

They were beyond it. The knit had become so worn down and brittle that it was ripping.
