Culture shock in Taiwan? oh yeah. I was kind of shocked by Taiwan even after a year in Japan. Granted, I was only in Taipei, but yeah.

i think the States don't celebrate CNY as much because it's not a commercial holiday like Christmas. you're giving away money in red envelopes and not going to a store and buying gifts for people, ykwim? although, you'll sometimes see lion dances or special meals in Chinese restaurants though... :P ( ... )

My parents moved from Hsinchu to Taoyuan, so we'll be staying there, closer to Taipei than we used to be ( ... )

I suspect it's population numbers historically, honestly. I wouldn't be too surprised if in 20-50 years CNY is a recognized, state-supported holiday, but I wouldn't count on it happening soon. Particularly on the east coast. My guess would be that California and Washington will start supporting it as an official holiday first, given the number of Asian immigrants, and acceptance moving eastward. I'm basing that on assumptions about Asian immigration, though, so I could be completely wrong. I don't have any stats nearby but do have a belly full of bourbon, so I'm certainly talking out of my butt.

So excited to hear about your trip to Taiwan. I'm sure fiance will be okay, once he gets over the jet lag. He's always struck me as a dude who can adapt to most environments. Culture shock, probably, but it's not like he'll make a fool of himself. Or you. Probably. :-)

I hope you both have a wonderful, and safe trip! Take pictures for me! One day I would like to go to a celebration like that and see it in person. I like leaning more about all cultures.
