Summary: Sometimes Kibum just felt jealous.
Snow coated the windowpane heavily, snowflakes dancing from the sky, bringing along a feeling of false contentment as Kibum watched from inside. It was a little chilly so he was wearing one of the large, fluffy sweaters Jonghyun bought him on one of his many trips to the US. It was warm and smelled like him, which made Kibum love it even more. It made him feel safe.
As he observed the happy couples doing their holiday shopping and sipping hot cocoa he couldn’t help but feel a little envious. He’d give anything to be doing what they were doing. To be outside flaunting his partner to the whole world. Well, if he had one.
Technically he and Jonghyun had a little something going on. A thing, because he didn’t know what else to call it. They’d never made it official.
They were both the type of people to voice their opinions quite vocally most of the time but Jonghyun never mentioned making Kibum his legitimate boyfriend, and as confident as Kibum was he couldn’t bring himself to mention it. What if he got rejected? Silly thought but it made him nervous nonetheless.
He knew Jonghyun wasn’t interested in seeing other people and he knew Jonghyun loved him. Why else would he be spending every day at his apartment, buying him gifts, writing him love songs and looking at Kibum with those eyes that said you’re the only one for me? He most certainly wasn’t imagining that and he felt the same way.
He loved Jonghyun. A lot. Not that they ever said it to each other. It started off a no-strings-attached sort of deal and morphed into something unexplainable but beautiful all the more. Kibum really didn’t want to mess that up.
Their relationship, their friendship, was the only thing he looked forward to in his life. It was one of the most important things to him, their bond. He felt extra special on the days when he awoke with the puppy-eyed male beside him, snoring quietly with a fringe of chocolate brown hair covering his face. Because then Kibum could push it back gently and gaze at him wholly, treasuring the sappy yet intimate moment. He wanted it to be like that forever. He just didn’t know how to properly convey that to J -
“There you are.” Strong arms encircled Kibum’s waist and he exhaled deeply, letting himself melt into the embrace. He liked being held like this. “The guys are gonna be here soon and I just finished cleaning the bathroom like you asked me to. What’re you doing over here all alone?”
The younger male shrugged. “Just thinking.”
“About?”
“A lot.”
“Come on, you can tell me! We’re best friends.” He breathed the last part into the crook of Kibum’s neck and tightened his grip around the thin midsection in his arms. Kibum couldn’t help the bitter smile that crept onto his face.
“Is that all we are?”
“What?”
“Is that it? We’re just best friends -nothing else?”
Jonghyun pulled away slightly and stared at him. Kibum didn’t take the bait. “What do you mean? Do you want something more?”
“Stop answering my question with more questions, Jjong.”
“You’re confusing me ‘Bum. Where is this coming from?"
“Nothing, I just,” he sighed, “forget it. I shouldn’t have brought it up.” He shrugged the shorter man off and continued to stare out the window, leaning against it and trying to create distance, attempting (but failing) to completely disregard Jonghyun’s presence behind him.
Neither said anything for a moment, one using the view of the outdoors to distract himself from the hurt that was threatening to take over his chest and the other using the view of Kibum to determine whether or not he wanted to take the leap he needed to make things right. He’d seen this coming for a while.
A calloused but soft hand grabbed Kibum’s and intertwined their fingers, squeezing gently. Comfortingly. He stepped up to the window, side by side with Kibum, who was watching him from the corner of his eye with bated breath.
“It’s beautiful outside.”
Kibum suppressed another sigh. “Yeah it is.”
“Not as beautiful as you, though.”
A scoff and an eye roll. “Lay off the cheesiness, please.”
“It’s true. And those snowflakes falling outside? They’re not nearly as unique as the one next to me.” Kibum rolled his eyes again and smacked Jonghyun’s chest lightly.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“Good. I hope I always will be in your eyes.” He turned to face Kibum, taking a step forward, and Kibum watched him intently, struggling to identify the emotions swirling in those deep pools that held his heart. For once, he was failing to read his best friend. He was at a loss.
“Yeah, I…yeah.”
A chuckle. “I’m going to kiss you, okay?”
Kibum’s heartbeat sped up and his head began to feel light. Simply one person could get such a reaction out of him and that was the man standing in front of him. He placed a hand on Jonghyun’s chest to hold him back. His heart was beating just as rapidly, if not more. That was a good sign, right?
“Okay. But will it be different this time?”
He felt Jonghyun’s warm breath wash over his lips and he gulped as he was tugged forward by his hips, hands sliding up and over his sides leisurely. It wasn’t anything they hadn’t done in the past; on instinct his arms wrapped around the elder’s neck.
“Just like a snowflake?"
Yes. It was on the tip of his tongue, but there were no need for words any longer.
(He decided not to mention the fact that Jonghyun should brush up on his lines because the ones he used were super cheesy. After all it had the effect on him that he guessed Jonghyun originally wanted all along. Plus, he secretly liked that kind of stuff. Shh.)
a/n - yeah...pretty lame OTL forgive me, I tried. but uhm yeah, OTP ftw.
