Chapter 13 - Stumble

“Yah, kid! Wake up! Wake up!”

“Huh?”

Someone hissed even louder. “Wake up kid!” A shove on his shoulder and JaeJoong was up. He blinked his still sleepy eyes a few times, rubbing them even to get a clear vision of an anxious looking old man. Oh. Memories were instantly refreshed. The driver. Master.

Automatically, he looked around.

“I don’t know who you are kid but I don’t want no trouble.” The old man groaned, terrified. Who wouldn’t when there’s about a dozen of man in black suit stopping your car and approaching you from every corner in the middle of nowhere? Especially after his eyes found a large signboard with PROPERTY OF JUNG YUNHO written on it. Isn’t that’s the name of the businessman involved in the bomb incident late last month? Who the hell is the kid I’m driving for? He’s old but he still has his family to take care of. Two of his sons were still studying. And his sick wife. He doesn’t want to die yet.

“We’re here!” JaeJoong suddenly exclaimed in pure relief from the backseat, surprising the panicky driver. Practically, they’re still acres away. But if he made it here, it was okay now.

The boy had actually fallen asleep quite a few times during the long drive - he swore he’s not sleepy but for some reason, sitting at the backseat trying his best to calm down his nerves exhausts him so bad - but everytime he woke up and realized they were still so far far away, more thoughts about the consequences of his action came to him. Most, negative. In fact, at some point, he didn’t even think it was possible for him to meet his master again. He didn’t think he’ll get there - at least not alive.

But he didn’t want to go back.

*START OF FLASHBACK*

- says that the President and CEO of YH Group is still in a comatose state. In the bombing incident that killed 2 people and injured 23 others, Jung YunHo was severely injured. After going in and out of the Emergency Room, he’s stabilized enough to be transferred to his mansion. Authority’s still trying track down the person responsible for shooting the car before the incident. Choi SeungHyun, Jung YunHo’s personal driver who’d gone missing after the incident is-

The remote control fell off his hand. He froze, staring at the screen trying to register her words. He knew what it meant, he does, but why can’t his brain tell him? Why does it feel like a puzzle? What does it really mean? What was it that makes his heart so heavy? What was she saying about his Master?

The shower was turned off.

JaeJoong immediately reached over and turned off the TV. He went back to his room - face lost and pale - and sat on his bed. Slowly, very slowly, things started to make sense.

YooChun hyung… He- He lied to me.... He said Master’s fine. He said Master told him I have to stay here. But it’s a lie. He lied. He lied to me… How can he lie to me when Master needs me? How could he?

The door was opened and YooChun peeked his head. “Have you had your breakfast?”

JaeJoong looked at him, feeling as if his whole life essence was drained - because everything he'd been believing in, everything he'd been holding on to was a lie - and very slowly, managed to shake his head. He was, on his way to the kitchen, when he suddenly changed his direction to the living room and opened the TV. He didn’t even know why. But he wasn’t hungry and if YooChun wasn’t there to force him to eat, he doesn’t want to eat. He just needed to listen to something and not think.

It always hurt when he let his mind wander. Because the boy's mind always - never once failing to - wander back to his master.

“JaeJoong, you have to eat. Don’t do this. YunHo wants you to be healthy. When things settle down, and he wants you to come home, what do you think he’ll do to me when he saw how skinny you’d become? He’ll kill me for sure. Aish. I’ll bring your breakfast here okay? You have to eat something.”

Without waiting for a reply, YooChun disappeared.

JaeJoong wanted to throw up. But you lied. Everything is a lie. You lied. You lied, YooChun hyung, you lied.

*END OF FLASHBACK*

The newscaster’s voice kept ringing in JaeJoong’s head, preventing him to think straight. All he could think of was what if something happened and YunHo died? The boy thought he’ll go crazy if his Master’s dead and he’s not there with him. He can’t handle that. He knew he’ll lose his mind. He's sure.

“Get out.”

Surprised by the sudden instruction, JaeJoong stared at the driver. Guilt and sympathy rose looking at the terrified and confused old face.

“Here, the-“

“Just get out kid! I don’t want any trouble so please, just get out. My wife and kids still need me!”

JaeJoong blinked, retracting his wallet. The boy just wanted to pay him. “I’ll leave it here,” JaeJoong said and left his wallet on the backseat as he climbed out of the car. The car screeched and drove away immediately.

“Master JaeJoong? Is that you?”

The boy knew that voice. He turned and nodded. “SiWon hyung!” Looking at the tallest man - the one in charge of the mansion's security - with nothing but determination in his eyes, JaeJoong inhaled sharply. “I want to see Master... I want to see YunHo. Take me to him.”

Even if he’s afraid, he will not let it show. He knew a lot of things now, he understand YunHo even more now. And as his Master’s only lover, the boy wanted to be worthy of him.

It doesn’t make sense. Why are they here? JaeJoong thought warily, absolutely confused to see those faces all around the mansion. Doesn’t HyoRi noona know that there’s a traitor between them? Why assigned the same men protecting Master that day to protect him now? The boy can’t understand a thing. Maybe they caught him already? And these men were clean? But if they did, why would YooChun keep me there and doesn’t allow me to come back?

SiWon opened the door for him, unaware of the thought running through JaeJoong’s mind as the boy kept his face cold without an expression.

JaeJoong stepped out of the car and one of the men who stood at the door immediately recognized him.

“Master JaeJoong?”

“Hyun Joon hyung!” JaeJoong remarked, trying to sound as natural as he could be. He doesn’t know if he should ask because Hyun Joon was one of the men in duty that day too. He doesn’t know who he can trust. If even his YooChun hyung would lie to him, how can he trust these people?

“How did you get here?! What happened to you? Where were you? Who took you? Is it really YooChun? Where is he now? What-”

Just like how the boy evaded the same questions from SiWon, JaeJoong just looked straight ahead, his eyes piercing into Hyun Joon’s and said, “I want to see YunHo.”

Understanding swept across the man’s face.

“Take me to him. Please.”

SiWon nodded at Hyun Joon.

“I’ll take you to YunHo’s room. Come,” Hyun Joon said and escorted the boy into the mansion.

Hyun Joon was just about to open the door when it was suddenly opened from the inside.

A tall man - probably around his Master’s age - in a simple white T-Shirt stared at the man seriously. “Hyun Joon? Here again? He’s- Eh. JaeJoong?”

JaeJoong emerged from behind Hyun Joon and stared at the man with a frown. His voice was vaguely familiar but he doesn’t recognize the face. And what’s he doing coming out from Master’s room? It was a strange time to realize things but JaeJoong idly remembered, he never did have the chance to roam inside his master’s room. Not even once. It was always his master that went to his room. The man never brought JaeJoong inside his and the boy, for some reason, never felt the need to. But seeing someone else going out of his master's room so easily when he had been so terrified of trespassing made him angry.

“Who are you?” He asked in a deliberate icy tone.

“He’s Shim ChangMin, YunHo’s personal doctor. He stayed here to take care of him. He's the one who transferred YunHo back to the mansion.”

“Just call me ChangMin hyung.” The man smiled but there was something in the way he smiled that caused JaeJoong to worry. “We met once, I come to check on you when you fainted a few months ago. But you’re unconscious that time so don’t worry, I don’t take it to heart that you don’t remember me.”

JaeJoong managed a tight smile. “ChangMin hyung. I’m here to see YunHo.”

“Oh. Of course you are.”

“How’s he?” Hyun Joon suddenly asked.

ChangMin quirked an eyebrow up. “Same. Unconscious. No sign of waking up yet but stable.”

JaeJoong felt his heart breaks. He was prepared, but still, a small part of him died.

“Oh. I was going to have my breakfast for a while. You-”

“Not hungry,” JaeJoongs said and Hyun Joon echoed, “I’ll keep Master JaeJoong company.”

ChangMin shrugged. “Okay.” He looked at JaeJoong for a fleeting second and brushed past them.

As Hyun Joon gestured for the boy to enter the room first, JaeJoong readied himelf for the meeting. He knew YunHo was unconscious. He knew YunHo was badly injured, He'd been preparing to see the man ever since he knew but apparently, all his mental preparation wasn't enough.

The moment JaeJoong set his eyes on YunHo, the boy immediately reached for his inhaler.

“I understand how you feel JaeJoong.” Hyun Joon said and squeezed JaeJoong’s right shoulder.

JaeJoong wanted to scream at him that the man doesn’t. There’s no way anyone could’ve understand what he felt looking at his master laying in bed like that - motionless, weak and vulnerable.

Because his master was so silent and still, JaeJoong would’ve even had a panic attack if it wasn’t for the small but steady rise and fall of the man’s chest. Even if his master’s eyes were closed, even if he was unconscious, at least the boy took comfort in knowing he was alive. But Master shouldn’t ever be like this.

To JaeJoong, the man was the perfect embodiment of power, of confidence and of valiance… So how can he looked like this? His head was bandaged, the right side of his face was bruised and scarred and JaeJoong had a feeling if he removed the blanket, he’ll saw that the rest of his master’s body was of the same fate. JaeJoong doesn’t want to see that.

JaeJoong knew what Hyun Joon pointed out earlier was right, that his master could've been in a worse condition. At least, he' doesn't even need help in breathing anymore. But how can JaeJoong accept this when he used to think that the man was invincible?

Nobody could’ve understood that to JaeJoong, such enigma like YunHo shouldn’t ever be allowed to look like that. That to JaeJoong, his master wasn’t supposed to even have a scratch on his body. To JaeJoong, he’d rather die than let the man get hurt.

And yet there was something in Hyun Joon’s voice that told him, yes, perhaps he does have an inkling of understand on JaeJoong's emotion right now.

“I’m sorry,” JaeJoong whispered, still holding his master’s hand and looking only at him. He was sitting on the only chair beside the bed and the man behind the boy sighed - long and dragged and painful - and JaeJoong knew he was right. “What… happened?”

“… She’s dead.”

JaeJoong waited for more but it was obvious Hyun Joon wasn’t going to give him anymore details so the boy kept quiet, murmuring prayers along with kisses against the back of the his master’s unmoving hand.

“Do you love him? YunHo?”

The question took JaeJoong by surprise. Nobody had ever questioned him that before, except for YooChun perhaps. YunHo’s men never really said anything about it and he wondered why. Why now?

The boy squeezed his master’s hand and nodded. “More than anything. I don't love anything but him.”

The man behind him stilled. He softly grunted, “YunHo loves you too. In his own weird way. He doesn’t have a heart, you know. He wouldn’t care about the lives he took, he wouldn’t care about the possibility of dying. But with you, he has it. A heart, I mean. You make him more… human.”

A frown started to form in between JaeJoong’s eyes. He knew all that. Yet, the fact that the man was talking about YunHo to him, like this, caused something heavy and uncomfortable to settle in the pit of his stomach. JaeJoong kept his silence, squeezing YunHo’s hand even tighter.

“He has fears now. All about you. He knew how to worry, how to feel pain… All because of you. You.”

And then JaeJoong felt it, the press of something cold and hollow against the side of his head. It’s you! “Hyun Joon hyung! Wh- What are you doing?”

Hyun Joon gripped the left side of JaeJoong’s shoulder so hard, the boy winced. “I’m sorry it has to be you... You’re a good kid. But YunHo loves you, and you love him.” He snorted and laughed. “You love him! This monster, you love him! I’m sure you don’t mind dying for him then.”

JaeJoong wanted to scream but all that come out was a soft whisper, “But why?”

The man laughed again, this time a little bit soft and broken. “All I had to do was make sure YunHo’s dead… That’s all. That’s all JaeJoong! It’s not such a bad thing. YunHo wasn’t the best of man, he was the devil himself. I’ll be doing the world a favor by getting rid of him, right? And Ji Ho would’ve let Hye Mi go too and then we’ll go far far away from here to start a new life. We’ll be happy! I know we will! But the plan failed and everyone on Ji Ho’s side is killed! Everyone! Even my beautiful and kind Hye Mi! What did she do wrong?! She’s innocent!”

Love. JaeJoong knew love. Love makes people blind and selfish. Hyun Joon was, in a way, just like him. Or was it the other way around? “You won’t get out of here alive.” JaeJoong said after a while, voice strangely calm despite his body now shaking in fear. He doesn’t want to die. Not when he have his master. Not now. Not when his master needs him.

“You think I still want to live after losing her?” He chuckled with amusement, laced heavily with agony. “I’ve only been waiting for you. All this time, I’ve been looking for you, do you know that? YunHo won’t feel anything if I killed him, if I tortured him, but you, if I killed you…” He laughed again. “He’ll feel the same misery he gave me.”

JaeJoong felt like he can’t breathe. He gasped softly, trying his best to calm down. No use calling for help, the man could’ve easily killed him before anyone even opened the door. And of course, everyone’s busy protecting the mansion from outside, how can they know the danger’s already inside, with YunHo and JaeJoong?

JaeJoong slowly let go of YunHo’s hand. His hand was trembling too much to keep hold on his master. Is this it? But the boy doesn’t want to die yet. Will the doctor be back soon? Can he save me? JaeJoong doesn’t want to lose YunHo. Not now, not now please!

“You’re hearing everything right now, don’t you YunHo? I’ve heard people in coma can feel and can hear things. So what do you feel now YunHo? Knowing you’re about to lose the only person you cared about? And you can’t do anything to save him. It’s the worst feeling in the world YunHo. Trust me, I know.”

“Don’t do this.” JaeJoong murmured, feeling more helpless and scared.

“Think of it this way JaeJoong,” Hyun Joon drawled, pressing the gun closer - JaeJoong’s sure it’ll leave a mark. Not that it matters. He's going to die. “It’s either you or YunHo. Do you want me to kill YunHo?”

“No.” JaeJoong slowly answered- ashamed. See? He’s selfish as well. He can’t live without YunHo. He doesn’t want to face that kind of pain. He can’t handle that. If someone had to die, he’d rather it be him.

And yet… when JaeJoong heard him pulled the trigger, the boy can't help but screamed.

A/N: Please tell me you can see this. And please tell me there's a few empty lines to distinguish the scenes. And please, just tell me the bold and itlicized words are there. [dies]
By the way, it's Shin Hyun Joon, the actor in Stairway To Heaven okay? Not Kim Hyun Joong Boys Over Flowers.
