Coraline and a rant on Tim Burton.

Feb 18, 2009 09:26

I went to see Coraline two days ago, and it was amazing. From the consistency of production/animation quality, to the sheer magnitude of artistic thought put into the film, I was just floored. Considering it was also made by LAIKA, an independent animation company using beautifully smooth and amazing stop-motion techniques... I don't know, I ( Read more... )

My problem with Tim Burton (for the last ten years or so, anyway) is that his movies have basically been just taking an existing property and shoving Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter into them with some gaudy imagery. His next movie is Alice in Wonderland, which will be the same thing again.

On the upside, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and Ed Wood are completely amazing and two of my favorite movies ever.

I definitely agree, and while Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp are nothing to bat an eyelash at, I'm a bit tired of them.

While I kinda like Tim Burton, I know the type of fans your talking about and see them in their relationship with a variety of art. Some people like something so much (or have a particular rightous attitude about theit likes) that they become positivly evangalistic when meeting people who don't the same exposure or apreciation towards whatever their like is ( ... )

I really enjoy some work by Neil Gaiman. I can even say he's one of my regular "favorites" because I own a number of his things, read a lot of his work, and among other things, find him to be a sexy older British man. However, I am in no way fanatic, and there are works of his I just haven't been able to digest well. Even then, it's understandable why someone might not be able to get behind his work if fans ruin it.

Reasonable Burton fans I can handle and enjoy talking to. I call myself a reasonable Gaiman fan, and at the best of times a reasonable Burton appreciator. But... ugh.

My huge Tim Burton crush aside, I know exactly what you mean about the fanatics.

I think Corpse Bridge was a very good movie in its own right. He didn't make it to be compared or to spiritually succeed Nightmare at all, but of course thats all people do.

I liked Corpse Bride because it fit my sort of story--darkly romantic/creepy cute with a positive ending (I'm a sap).

I'm curious as to what he's going to do with Alice. It's either going to be brilliant or terribly botched. We'll see. It seems that he's following things more bookwise rather than remaking Disney, which should also be very interesting (Alan Rickman as the caterpillar!! perfect).

The Helena Bonham Carter thing IS getting old. The same thing is happening with Johnny Depp. I'll never debate her talent, but it gets tiring!

ETA: Also, in Fairfield, we have far too many Nightmare hoodie teens. This could be a BIG reason why I'm so turned off by it all.
