It's occured to me that sewing is not like knitting for me. While this seems terribly obvious, let me go into detail first: when I was little, my grandmother taught me the basic knit/purl stockinette and garter stitches, so coming back to it several years later was a lot easier and quicker for me. I am not allergic to either children or cats, so I think all is good.
Perhaps a skirt is the best idea, it's a good start in general... and natural fibers in the summer is a must. I'll have to pick up my own fabric, but that shouldn't be too difficult.

I agree w/the above, skirts are great to start with, & there are some great ways to jazz 'em up. I think Jo-Ann's Fabrics has some pattern brands for 99 cents this holiday weekend too.
