Housing for the new(?) generation?

Jan 19, 2011 13:40

This was the opening line of a Yahoo article today:
Here's what Generation Y doesn't want[ in terms of houses]: formal living rooms, soaker bathtubs, dependence on a car.
This cracks me up because (even if I'm only borderline Gen Y), I agree with this 100%. I would also say no formal dining room (either a dining room and no breakfast nook or a large ( Read more... )

I personally am not bothered by jacuzzi tubs as a waste of space... it's more "There is no way the current owner takes care of this tub appropriately. No one cleans their jacuzzi tubs appropriately. THEY ARE PETRI DISHES"

(One of the other layouts in my complex has a single bathroom on the top floor, in the middle, with a ginormous jacuzzi tub. In a place my size, that's a bit wasteful... but I do have 3 bathrooms, which is a little excessive anyway. Anyway, I hated that layout. But not as much as I hated the "That's not a kitchen pantry, that's the BATHROOM" layout.)

But I do love your balcony solution. [thumbs up]

Water with bleach added run through the jacuzzi for a while cleans things out rather nicely. And it's an absolute MUST (I'm a total mysophobe).

You know, I'd have to say, I LOVE balconies. Outside of winter, I spend an inordinate amount of time on them. The fiancee has a 26th floor condo in Toronto, and we love hanging out on the balcony, looking at the city below or just enjoying the view of the water and the distant, teeming life.

Of course, I also have a house with a formal dining room, a formal sitting room, a fireplace (that I love), and a large breakfast nook (that's awesome, since it's bright and cheery). All of them get used frequently. I mean... how can you have a dinner party without a dining room? Or a cocktail party without a formal sitting room/living room?

lol Well, I guess that goes to show that people need different types of houses depending on their lifestyle! Since my idea of a good dinner party involves either A) a night out followed by drinks in someone's living room or B) sitting around on the floor and snacking on cheese and veggie platters, formal entertaining areas are unfortunately wasted on me. ^_^

A friend of mine is a French chef. His idea of a dinner party involves stuffing his guests with so much food and so many courses that we explode somewhere along the line. Last time I was over there, he even had menus, so we'd know what was coming:

This sort of thing absolutely requires a dining room. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for dining out with friends as well and returning back for drinks. But sometimes, I just like to entertain. :)

Well obviously if I had chefs willing to make me food, I'd invest in a dining room, too. lol Sounds delightful!
