japanese colleges

i dont get why japanese think they have such a terrible life when it comes to applying to colleges. for some reason, they shut themselves from the world and study like there is no tomorrow. i can think of a few good reasons...actually, only one: japanese people never study in high school and spend most of the class time sleeping
